1. Violence against police officers

During an incident in Kentucky, police officers were ambushed by gunfire from an assault rifle. They were responding to a domestic violence call. Two police officers were killed. The perpetrator was arrested and is awaiting trial for murder of the police officers.

  • According to this World News Tonight broadcast, 178 police officers have been shot in the line of duty so far this year in the United States. That is 19% higher than this time last year.

2. Shark attack victim

A seventeen year old female shark attack victim named Addison has been airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Doctors are currently trying to save her leg.

The shark attack victim's brother, an EMS worker, helped to pull her out of the water and save her. He used a tourniquet for her leg.

3. WNBA star detained in Russia

Illegal in Russia, cannabis oil was found in WNBA star Brittney Griner's luggage when she went to Russia. The United States basketball player has now been detained in Russia for over six months and is now awaiting trial. If found guilty, she may have to serve five to ten years in prison.

4. Parents of shooting victims in Uvalde, Texas

Tonight's broadcast of World News Tonight with David Muir (Whit Johnson filling in for David) had coverage of parents of shooting victims at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas demanding answers [for how this could have happened]. The "outraged" parents were gathered at a city council meeting in Uvalde, Texas to have their voices heard.

5. Flight Delays

Airplane flight delays and cancellations are occurring across the country.

On one overbooked flight, eight passengers were even offered $10,000 cash for their seats.

6. Gas prices are up

In the United States, gas prices are up across the country and in Compton, California, cars lined up for blocks at one gas station for a $50 gas giveaway.

On this Friday, July 1, 2022 World News Tonight broadcast, a helicopter view showed aerial footage of the cars lining up.

7. Skyfari ride stuck in the air

A Skyfari ride at a park in Massachusetts was stuck in the air at 40 feet on an almost 90 degree day.

  • The ride is designed to give an aerial view of the animals in the park.
  • Several people were stuck on the ride and had to be rescued.

8. The Medal of Freedom Award

President Biden will be giving the MEDAL OF FREEDOM AWARD, the highest civilian honor (bestowed by the U.S. Presidential administration) to seventeen civilians next week.

The Medal of Freedom award recipients will include:

  • the late Steve Jobs
  • Denzel Washington
  • Simone Biles

9. Betty Nash - oldest flight attendant

The last news story featured on tonight's broadcast of World News Tonight with David Muir (Whit Johnson filling in for David Muir) was about a woman named Betty Nash.

  • Betty Nash is being honored and recognized as the oldest working flight attendant in the country.
  • Betty Nash is 86 years old and is employed by American Airlines
  • She has been an airline stewardess / flight attendant for over 65 years.
  • Betty Nash started working as a flight attendant at the age of 21.
  • She chose a shuttle service schedule (for cities such as Boston and Chicago) that that would allow her to be at home every night to care for her son with special needs.
