Sincerely, there are various challenges that the education sector of the African continent have been facing for years now. These challenges affect the child’s educational learning and understanding in a very big way. In this topic, the challenges are to be discussed followed by the possible solutions in solving all of them.
Among the reasons for the many challenges faced by the secondary schools in Africa is due to selfishness and corruption. The members of the political class in the continent are known for these two hindering factors. They prefer to embezzle the funds which are to be used in development of secondary schools in the continent instead of investing right in the schools. Investing is schools is what most European countries do but Africa does not want to learn.
Challenges in Computer Learning in Secondary Schools
It is clear to everybody that computer is gradually taking the stage of academic learning in the whole world. In line with this, all the leaders, both the governors and the presidents of most African countries are making effort to see that computers are installed in various secondary schools for acquisition in computer skills.
Notwithstanding the efforts made by the leaders in various parts of Africa including Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Congo, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Gabon, Zimbabwe, just to mention but a few, there are problems that the students face which hinder the learning of computer skill acquisition in secondary schools.
One of the challenges facing the learning of computer in African secondary schools is the non-availability of the instructors that will impact the knowledge of computer into the students. Though the computers have been installed, the question is on who will help the students in learning of the computer skills.
Employing good instructors that will educate African secondary school students is a better option to solving the problem of computer skill acquisition. The instructors are to be well paid in order to do the much they could to help the students acquire the required skill in computer.

What are the major challenges facing secondary schools in Africa? The major challenges facing secondary schools in Africa are:
- Poor government funding
- Unqualified teachers
- Poor Infrastructure
- Inadequate Payment
Most private secondary schools in Africa are after profit and not mainly on the knowledge to be imparted on the secondary school students. This is bad. It is one of the challenges with the education sector of Africa. The private proprietors of most private secondary schools in Africa employ unqualified teachers who lack experience on teaching profession to teach the students. This is one of the reasons why many of the students perform poorly, and that is one of the root causes of examination malpractice. An unqualified teacher will have little or nothing to offer to the students he or she teaches.
There is no argument when it comes to the level of poor infrastructural standard that the African students make use of during their studies. The use of poorly build schools affects the level of understanding of the students negatively. Think of a situation where the students are learning in a classroom whose roof has been weakened and all the roofing sheets fallen away from the building. If it happened that rain began to fall, what will be the condition of the students and the teacher teaching them on that day? The truth is that is either the teaching ends at that moment or the students dismissed for the day.
Inadequate payment of teachers is another factor that challenges secondary school education in Africa. The amount of payment given to any teacher is dependent on the quality of service that the teacher will deliver. Management cannot pay $70 to an African teacher as salary for the month when he know that she is supposed to be paid at least $350 and expect quality service to be given to the students.
This has been a problem in black race countries. The politicians take all the money and feel ignorant of taking care of the teachers that took care of them. These same teachers are the people that are bringing up other young talents in the countries.
Many schools in Africa are not secured. The students who are learning in the schools are not guaranteed of their safety. This attitude in one way or the other has resulted to loss of lives of those that came to schools to learn. It is bad as parents who has lost their children through this careless attitude of school managers are in pains.
In Nigeria for instance, in the month of October 2017, there was outbreak of people administering vaccines to the students of primary and secondary schools in the country. Some of the students who received such vaccines died. After some reactions of the public, the government and heath departments of the country denied that they did not send any of such group for vaccination. That is to show you the level of insecurity in African secondary schools.
This can be confirmed by Vanguard News publication on October 12, 2017 through the sentence "The entire South East zone is currently in commotion, following widespread rumour alleging invasion of schools by men dressed in military uniform and allegedly injecting pupils and students to death with an unknown vaccine linked to monkey pox."
Solutions to the Problems Facing Secondary School Education in Africa
The problems or challenges that the secondary school education in Africa is facing can be solved if only the solutions to be provided are taken and practiced.
Proper Government Funding
Any government that wants the good of the entire education sector of Africa must do well to fund the sector. In the same way, the resurrection of the standard of African secondary schools should start from funding by governments in various countries in Africa. It is the duty of every government to see to the good of the people he is leading including all the secondary schools.
Can you compare the infrastructural level of secondary schools in Africa to that of United States of America? The difference is clear and the blind can even differentiate between the two. Both government and capable individuals should form a team to sponsor secondary schools by taking care of the infrastructural aspect. Doing this will enhance and upgrade the secondary schools in Africa and help students to comprehend more.
Paying good and adequate salaries to secondary school teachers will make qualified and well educated Africans to get interested in teaching. When this is done, the students will find education interesting rather than puzzle or difficult task. If a qualified teacher that is well grounded in mathematics takes care of secondary school students, the students will find mathematics interesting and will not shy away from mathematics questions.
Government should appoint or elect monitoring teams. These teams will be visiting secondary schools in African countries to examine the quality of teachers, infrastructural level and other important areas that need to be addressed in secondary schools. When these teams work actively, they will reduce the number of unqualified teachers that parade all round Africa as secondary school teachers while they have nothing in their own heads not to talk of imparting in the students.

In summary, governments in African Continent should have a rethink and know that if secondary schools are in good state the future of the Continent becomes bright. Hi - Thanks I enjoyed the article. I think Covid has exposed some of the inadequacies here in South Africa. Rural school children were not able to get the same benefit of online learning and assistance than urban schools
