The Facts or At Least What's Being Told to Us

During this year, our society as a whole, has experienced pain, loss, sickness, and the struggle to keep up with being able to live day by day. The biggest factor that has caused these obstacles to occur has been due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The coronavirus is a virus that primarily affects a mammals' respiratory system. The coronavirus is believed to have been started in Wuhan, China from a local seafood market in December 2019. However, later reports suggest that this wasn't the single cause of the outbreak due to some people having the virus but not having any connection to the market itself.

As of now, researchers are still studying the process of how the the virus transmits from human to human. So far, they've find out that the virus is concentrated in the airways such as the nose and lungs and can pass to another person from the droplets that come from the nose and the mouth. However, they are still studying the full parameters of the transmission and how people are infected. It is crucial to keep in mind that the virus only travels a few feet before falling to the ground, which is why it is imperative that we continue to practice good social distancing skills.

The coronavirus symptoms are similar to that of the flu and pneumonia except there are few symptoms that differentiates the virus from these viruses. The coronavirus symptoms are shown below:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath/ Difficulty Breathing
  • Headache
  • Congestion
  • Sore Throat
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Loss of smell and taste
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, you may want to visit a doctor or got to the hospital to be tested for the coronavirus, if all as fails such as home remedies and in the case your symptoms appear to be getting worse.

Precautions and Treatment of the Coronavirus

The number one precaution of the virus is to stay 6 feet apart from someone else and to wear a mask and gloves. This protective gear is to help with prevention of the virus from one person to another, even those whom appear as asymptomatic. Other precautions are to self quarantine with those whom you are living with, to keep frequently used areas clean, and to keep yourself as healthy as possible.

At this time, there are no known specific treatments for any mild or moderate case of the coronavirus. However, in early May, the FDA issued its first emergency use for a COVID-19 treatment for the investigational antiviral drug, remdesivir. This drug to treat suspected or laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 in adults and children hospitalized with severe disease. Even though there is little information know about the safety and effectiveness of remdesivir, there were preliminary studies down that showed that it may help to shorten the recovery time from 15 days to 11 days.

Most recently, the WHO issued new treatment guidelines to make corticosteroids (also known as steroids) a standard of care, but only for patients with “severe and critical” cases of COVID-19. These guidelines were made due to the analysis from several clinical trials that showed these drugs helped to reduce the risk of death in hospitalized COVID-19 patients by a third.

My Thoughts About the Coronavirus

In my opinion, I believe the coronavirus should have never reached the United States. I'm not proficient at what policies or actions that needed to be taken to prevent the spreading of the virus to United States, however, I do believe that whatever took place to prevent Ebola from becoming a pandemic should have been the same action that was done this time around. Our government has let us down and now there are 100,000's of people that should be here with us but are not due to passing from the coronavirus. I think that the coronavirus is here to stay and that any type of vaccine for the virus early on would cause more harm than good. I see us as a society wearing masks, gloves, and being socially distant from others for the long haul.

Due to the coronavirus, our society has dealt with death, sickness, financial instability, mental issues, etc. A lot of people at the moment are unable to work due to being let go, physical, emotional, and mental issues, losing a loved one, etc. These stress factors are causing people to commit crimes, to act irrationally, and to harm others. With that being said, our economy is dwindling along with our mental health. Hopefully, one day, a treatment is created for the coronavirus that will help everyone to return to their normal selves as well the economy. In the meantime, the only thing we can do is continue to survive as best as we can and to try to have a positive outlook on what's ahead.
