Biden Is Back: Time to Look at What Obama the Last Democratic President Achieved

An senior air warrior and political observer who has the pulse of the region and can sense a change when it comes.

Like a ritual that is conducted every four years, the American presidential election throws up a new face. Nobody has been able to define whether this is good or bad but history teaches us that for a great emperor or ruler to be effective he has to be there for at least a decade or two.

This frequent change of guard at the top of the ladder in America is good for democracy. In reality, it has resulted in pulling down the American image and effectiveness in the world. President Roosevelt had four terms and he not only took America forward economically with the new deal but also won World War II and made America what it is now. For some reason, after that Congress restricted the President to 2 terms only and the net result is that there has been a number of presidents after 1945 and overall one can see that there has been a downslide in world effectiveness and prestige.

Trump was president for four years but his nemesis was the coronavirus that shattered the American economy. All the good work done by him for the economy was washed away until date 250,000 Americans have died of the virus. He was definitely a divisive figure at home But out in the world, he brought peace in the Arab lands with the recognition of Israel by hardline Arab-Sunni states. He also identified China as an opponent and the instigator of the 'China virus' a name which he used repeatedly and also strengthened relations with Taiwan and India. But in midstream he has been defeated and now we have another Democrat who will be sitting in the White House namely Joe Biden.

Biden will be a Democratic President after a gap of four years. Earlier to him President Barack Obama was at the helm of affairs for eight years. It is worth examining what Obama achieved during his eight years and one can then make an assessment as to what Biden is going to do. Biden has been in politics for close to 50 years but nobody is able to pinpoint what exactly is his contribution during this period. The only news which I heard about him is that his son had some connection with China from which he made some pecuniary gains and there were allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Obama as president

Obama was the first colored American to be president of the USA, though strictly he was not pure black as he had a white mother. Obama's father was Moslem from Kenya and he earlier went to a Muslim school- a Madrasa. But later he converted to Christianity but many have had lurking suspicions about his real love for Christianity. Many wonder whether he in his heart had a soft corner for Islam. Many Americans have brought forth evidence that Obama sold the American state and the reason they cite is his belief in Islam.

Frankly, I don't think Obama is a Muslim, but there is no doubt that he had a soft corner for Islam and he had little love for Israel. If I remember correctly he only visited Israel once and that also only in his second term. This just about shows his bias. One wonders whether his bias in favor of Islam actually affected America's interests in the world. One can see that he adopted a strong stand against North Korea but he almost treated the ISI and China with kid gloves. His performance in Afghanistan was pretty poor. In hindsight, we can see that the resurgence of the Taliban now can be traced to the Obama years when he reduced his commitment to fighting in Afghanistan. Another aspect of this policy was to be severe on Russia and at the same time go soft on China. It was during his tenure that China consolidated its hold on the South China Sea and he tacitly agreed with it.

Obama was not a strong president, but one really can't blame him for this as Congress was always ranged against him and many of his good intentions were squashed by Congress which had the Republican majority. Thus, Obama achieved nothing significant. Perhaps one aspect of his foreign policy is the patch up with the communist regime in Cuba. This was the giant step forward and after 60 years he reversed the irrational American policy. But in other spheres, he was tongue-tied and some actions like supporting Muslim migration to the EU and the US are difficult to explain.

Obama blundered in removing the dictator of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, and this folly allowed the Muslim brotherhood to have a say in Cairo, till the army jailed their leader Mohammed Morsi. His failure in Libya is palpable and his crude attempts to cover the killing of the US ambassador in Benghazi are an eye-opener and one wonders whose interests he had in mind. In short, Obama was a lackluster president and achieved little. He just sat and went away and I am afraid his only contribution is that the USA came down in world esteem by a notch or two. Yet the American people elected him for two terms but as the saying goes to see how you actually look you have to see the mirror. Historians will note that the downward slide of America commenced with Barack Obama and Trump was a bit of a maverick and we will have to watch what Biden is going to do.

On the home front, what did Obama achieve? The American economy was already strong and Obama just inherited it. But during his time billions of dollars of investment went into China and he was happy with it. He also introduced 10 years Visa for Chinese.

Last word

I cannot help feeling that Joe Biden is not going to achieve anything. At the best, he can maintain the status quo. We must remember that great empires survive that do not look for accommodation with the enemy. Unfortunately, Biden is looking for accommodation with China and a look at the administration which he is planning to put into place shows that the same Obama-era philosophy is going to come back. The world has changed and Biden has also to change and confront China but I don't see this happening and maybe his whole aim will be to try and win the next election and then go into the sunset of history.

Thank you, Lora, nice that you commented and gave your view point. This is the essence of a debate.

Lora Hollings on November 25, 2020:

I don't agree with you, emge, about Obama. I think he was one of our best presidents and did a lot to help the environment and restore America's image as a world leader. He also was responsible for making health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans. I'm glad that Trump was defeated as he was undoing many of the good things that Obama had done to protect our environment and our health. Trump was a terrible president who had no vision for America and didn't accomplish anything but cause division and an unchecked spread of a virus that led to the death of hundreds of thousands of people because of his failure as a leader and his lacking of important human qualities (such as caring about his fellow man) that makes a president a real leader. He should have been impeached for his serious violation of the constitution but lucked out only because of a Republican controlled senate but it looks like Mr. Trump will have to pay for his crimes after all, as he won't be able to hide under the cloak of presidential immunity any longer. I think Biden will make a fantastic president because he really cares about people and he is already assembling a very competent cabinet of some of the finest people in their field, unlike Trump where many in his cabinet are serving jail terms.

This is a good article and if Biden has a vision for the future he hasn't told us. I am concerned theat Kamala Harris will run the show.

Tom, very correct. Many blacks are feeling mighty thrilled that the "evil" Trump has been removed and Biden has come. Do they honestly feel that all the killings of the blacks is going to stop? after all the Democrats have been there for almost 200 years off and on and yet the discrimination against blacks and killings has not stopped. The result is that the colored man is a deprived man and he resorts to violence and rape and again he is convicted and sent to the electric chair or to life imprisonment. No wonder the majority of prisoners in American Jails are blacks and colored.

Nice and analytical article. I agree with most of what you have mentioned above.

Only time will tell, what will actually happen in America.

Thank you for sharing.
