Male Vs Female Equality: Are Men and Women Equal?

Men and women have different physical strengths

The question whether men and women are equal arose after revolution in most countries. In the past and according to history the question about gender equality was not something debatable. It was automatic that women were lesser and could only hold lesser positions in the society.A Woman would in fact be treated as a man's property which in turn justified the beating of wives by husbands.Men would argue that their wives are their property can therefore do with them whatever they wish to do.There is still a widespread belief that women are not equal to men.

Men and women have natural differences based on biological and anatomic factors. Biological differences include chromosomes, brain structure, reproductive and hormonal differences. They also have differences in physical strengths.Men are more physically stronger, more aggressive and externally oriented. On the other hand, women usually embody the ideal of inner dignity which is often confused for weakness while the truth is,that dignity is stronger than the any aggressive physical force. Having stated the differences between men and women, should we therefore say that men and women are unequal due to this differences?

Reasons why men and women are equal despite their differences

Women often argue that they are equal to men. When they are asked what makes them equal to men they say that they can anything that men do for example they can be engineers, lawyers, doctors etc. They cite that these factors make them equal or they should at least be considered equal. What women are saying is that their ability to perform in masculine duties should be used to judge their equality to men.

To determine if men and women are equal we have to first define what is gender equality.Gender equality refers to equal treatment of individuals based on their gender.Being equal does not mean that women and men are the same.It means that they have equal value and should be accorded equal treatment. This therefore means that women, men, girls and boys should enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities and protections. This does not require that girls, boys, women and men be the same.

Inequality in education

Areas in which women have not been treated equally

Though the differences between men and women doesn’t make any of them deserve to be treated unequally or be mistreated, women have in most cases not been treated unequally.Below are some examples of gender inequality currently practiced in the world today.

  1. Income inequalities- Income inequalities have been experienced by women in various work places.Salary discrimination exists when employees are equally qualified and perform the same work but one group of employees is paid more than another. In this case, men have often been paid higher than women.
  2. Education – While young boys are allowed to go to school, sometimes girls are left at home, helping in house chores while others are forced into marriage at a young age.On the other hand, those who go to school and are educated are sometimes not allowed to get into professional careers such becoming lawyers, doctors secretaries among others.
  3. At home- Women are traditionally expected to put their educational and careers on hold so that they can raise children while their husbands go to work.Women therefore work more at home doing childcare chores while men take less time in childcare and spend more time at work.
  4. Divorce- In some countries women cannot initiate a divorce. In other instances husbands can divorce their spouses easily even orally while the wife’s access to divorce is often extremely limited.
  5. Clothing- In some muslim countries, men are free to wear anything whereas the muslim women can only wear head to toe garments that cover their clothes. Men are allowed to punish and beat women who do not cover themselves up in public.
  6. Property ownership- Here inequality is experienced in instances such as where men are often allowed to inherit their fathers property while women are not allowed to do so because of their gender
  7. Citizenship- In countries such as Afghanistan, citizenship can only be passed by fathers to their children while women cannot do the same.In addition, men can pass citizenship to their foreign wives while women cannot pass it to their husband.

Antonymous, true prejudice even as womwn fight for equality they should be fit for the job given and jobs should not be given to them simply because they are women. They should have the qualifications and be able to prove they are qualified for the job.But that opportunity to proce themselves ought to be there.

Antonymous on May 06, 2019:

Sanxuary, we talk about prejudice about roles and the idea of kitchen being the only place for women not actual average physical difference in strength, which mean if a woman gets or not gets a job for being fit or not being fit enough for that job, not on the ground of just being a woman.

Also restrictive gender expectations which say there are a right and wrong way to be a woman or men or being less of one.

The comment above that calls anyone not treating the sexes equal as psychos is humorous. The problem is defining the standards of equality, have you ever tried creating such equality with out a double standard. Try a very physically demanding job and now tell me what standards are you going with? Technically you have to find a happy middle and it has nothing to do with who can or can not do something. It has everything to do with ratios and if you want a balanced work force then you must lower your standards or find another way to equalize the work. We keep screaming equality, but we ignore the facts on the ground and do not change the conditions to make equality possible. Its not a debate of equal pay or treatment but more about work place conditions. If men are forced to carry 100 pound blocks and the majority of women refuse to carry them, then is it a surprise that few women would work in such a place? What if the blocks were 40 pounds instead or we advanced the technology so that machinery could do all the work and save everyone's backs. Regardless of how strong or weak someone might be it would be nice if the work was the same for everyone.

I am a Muslim 18 year old, and saying that men have the right to beat woman based on what she wears because it is our religion is not right. That may not have been implied that our religion says that in this text, but if i was a non Muslim who did not exactly understand the religion of Islam then I would have thought that Islam is just a absurd religion. I go out to college everyday wearing whatever I want and i do NOT get beat for it, that's just ridiculous. So I did not appreciate that fact. Also on that picture of the African American lady, that is not right to put that there. It just points to the African society and culture giving people the wrong idea of their lives and religion (speaking from experience).

I agree that there should be equality as women does much better in studies than men. Both men and women should be treated equally in the eyes of every individual.

ayus acharya on September 03, 2014:

it's a fact that amazes me :

today we can see that many women are fighting for the equality though most of them belong to the religion that says,if enemy raises you gun then don`t ever raise your`s or if somebody throws you stone then throw a flower at him..

if it is the situation that compell them to fight then why aren't they letting this situation to go on??//

Equality for all races, yes. Equality for all classes, yes. Equality for all sexes, yes. We have to change the ''LAW'' for equality to exist for all. For example, when a female assault a male, there is little to no consequence to her actions. The male is sometimes mocked for pressing charges. Now when a male assaults a female that is being aggressive or violent, he is arrested as well as she is. And he will be shamed for putting his hands on a female even thou he was defending himself. How about abortions. If the mother wants the child and the father doesn't, the child is born and the father still has to pay child support. If the mother doesn't want the child and the father does, the child is aborted because the father doesn't have the same say. Speaking of child support, everybody has to pay child support. But how often does the state and court system really go after females, who don't pay child support, like they go after males. How about sexual predators. A 35 year old male teacher has sex with a 15 year old female student, everybody looks at the teacher as scum. People will see the teacher as evil. If a 35 year old female teacher has sex with a 15 year old male student, we don't look at the teacher with the same level of disgust and hatred. People wont see the teacher as evil. How about serial murderers. There are many documented male serial killers but so few female serial killers. The reason why there isn't many documented female serial killer because the authorities once believed females didn't have what it takes to be a serial killer. Even today there is still no definitive profile for female serial killers. Have you ever wonder why media uses ''sexual assualt'' instead of ''rape'' now. By law females can not perform the act of rape because by law the definition of rape is to penetrate someone without their consent. So by law females can't rape because females can't penetrate because females don't have a penis. Speaking of rape, a female can accuse a male of assault or rape and he is charged. All authorities need is the female testimony and that is enough for an arrest. When a male accuses a female of rape or assault, he needs more then his testimony, actual evidence, for the arrest. These are just a few situations where the law favors one side more than the other. My examples favored the females and have the males getting the short end of the stick. These are from my own life experiences as well as some from my male friends and male family members. I am positive there are situations that occur that favors the males and have the females getting the short end of the stick. T

In the USA it is political suicide to treat women as second class citizens. And do you want equality or equal proportion? DO you want equal treatment or equal representation?

You talk about other countries where women have no rights essentially, but, you never tell us which countries. YOU HAVE PICTURES OF WOMEN IN AFRICA...Seriously?

This idea you say, where women have inner dignity, is sexist. Do you see the smut the sexual revolution has brought around? Where is this dignity?

Women are the foundation of which a civilization is judged -Rousseau (one of the contributes to the constitution). So the idea women didn't, before the sexual revolution, have more power then men -different yes but still more power- is ridiculous. Women gave up power to be equal...

Besides a lack of equal pay, what are you really talking about? Every other point you made was horrible. No one you talk about has the internet or lives where these problems actually matter.

Womensrights - stop being jealous of how much we earn. We do it for you (or at least 80% for you). Seriously though, women control most spending. That is incredible power. Boycot businesses that discriminate against women by offering unfair wages and you will rule the world. We poor men just don't have that kind of influence -- economically, socially, or even politically. But we dare say nothing. It is kind of ironic if you step back and take a realistic look at how things actually work.

Sanxuary on June 04, 2014:

I think equality is all over the board. Go to any work place and count the ratios and you will find a lot of places that are far from equality. I applied at a lot of places where I later went and was not surprised by the fact that I never got an interview. If you think equality works you should try family court and see what sex they pick in favor of. Lets see do men have a right to not have their child aborted or maybe to have it aborted to avoid paying child support forever? You should try to get child support from a woman who has three more kids. Unless she is a criminal you are not going to get much from a sociopath who will legally harass you until you give up on seeing your kids. The bottom line is that men pay and literally have to fight to have any rights to see their children. In terms of physical labor the majority of most people are weak . This means that any hard working person should succeed regardless of sex. I find on any job that if you discover someone's strengths, that there is generally enough crap to do that it makes up for their weaknesses.

The only difference between men and women is physical strength in favor of men and pain threshold in favor of women. Men are physically stronger this is why they react to pain less and why pain passes more quickly, however women have a higher pain threshold and men pass out because of pain earlier. Both are equally intelligent and equally capable at doing tasks involving intelligence such as mathematics, engineering, music, reading, child raising, economics, etc. Both are equally aggressive. and

Women deserve, as everyone deserves, equal rights regardless of biological differences. The trend lately, especially for conservatives, is to roll back advances in gender equality. This is male arrogance plain and simple. Religion is another factor that they manipulate to justify their prejudices against women. Excellent Hub, Womensrights.

Dayn you can be quite hilarious.I guess the issue of dating a short man is based on societal biasness and personal preferences.I guess its not women don't reject the shorter men out of hate or something like that but out of the pressure the society puts on them by stressing that taller men are better

letter to the editor:

it's MADNESS, i tell you! MADNESS!!

as stated on, every woman is subjugating herself by accepting a spouse or a significant other who is a man and who is superior to her in height. everywhere i look, it's tall man/short vagina. i don't understand how vaginas everywhere could not be ashamed of themselves, proclaiming gender-equality while adding insult to inferiority by publicly proclaiming their lesser states-of-being with each and every date-night that they partake in.

heck, do it for the memory of all "strong women" who were murdered not by a weapon but by a strong(er) man.

first came gender-based sporting events to keep the vaginas from competing with men (and from being a detriment to the team). then came gender-based requirements for acceptance into both the military and the police-force (making these forces look more like farces, where masculine competency is sacrificed for the politically-correct inclusion of members of the shorter/smaller/weaker gender whose physical competency pales in comparison to that of men). for crying out loud, coney island went and added a "women's division" to their frankfurter-eating competition so that there could be such a thing as a female champion. AND, on top of everything else, there's the "do it HERself" workshop at the home depot (which, like "curves fitness," serves as a "mister rogers" type of "land of make believe" and caters to vaginas who are either too intimidated or too pious to function around a superior gender...ahem, make that "unjustifiably pious," just because there is no reason for feminists to feel that their gender can trump anything but a defenseless baby's head).

as a way to battle the meek public-image of women that the aforementioned physical competitions contribute to, please IMPLORE all women to STOP LOOKING UP TO THEIR DATES. society must STOP seeing a man with a vagina on his arm if the man is taller than the vagina. women must be the tall ones in the relationship - if society got used to the concept of "short man/tall woman," then the concept of "the lesser gender" would not necessarily signify the female gender. granted, men's broad shoulders would still point to a the existence of a stronger gender (as would their superior biceps, v-shaped backs, ripped chests and thick legs), but if every vagina would only date men who are shorter...well, i truly believe that the whole "masculine superiority" thing would slowly fade away.
