A new survey shows that 44% of Democrats believe over 1,000 unarmed black men were killed by the police in 2019. Conservatives guessed 10. The actual number was 9. This is one of many instances where the views of Democrats are far from reality.
It is not uncommon to hear a Democrat claim that “white people created the police and our courts to oppress black people.” Or as lawyer and author Ben Crump puts it, “legalized genocide of colored people.”
Colin Kaepernick despises America and our flag because “black people are being murdered by the police” all the time. Another black multimillionaire, NBA coach Doc Rivers claims, “We're the ones getting killed. We're the ones getting shot. It's amazing why we keep loving this country, and this country does not love us back.” NBA superstar LeBron James proclaims, "Black Men are hunted anytime we step out of our homes. We are scared as Black people in America. Black men, Black women, Black kids, we are terrified.”
According to actress Julianne Moore, “Black people are being slaughtered in the streets, killed in their own homes.” Many celebrities have joined with the NAACP to make videos that preach America is home to “systematic racism by the police.”
Politicians join in. Senator Booker declares, “White supremacy manifests itself in the criminal justice system.” Senator Gillibrand proclaims, “Whiteness protects white men from being shot by the police.” “Michael Brown was murdered by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri,” falsely asserts Senator Warren.
"Abolish the Police" is a slogan of Black Lives Matter. The Democrat Party is 100% onboard with BLM. The media is mostly in lockstep. "Policing Needs to be Abolished," screams the Washington Post. "Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police," agrees the New York Times.
The question is, is it true that the police habitually badger and brutalize black men who have broken no law? Are cops killing black men because they are black? Is there really “an epidemic of police shootings of unarmed black men?”
“The tragic truth is, the most dangerous place for a black American is not in the presence of a police officer. The most dangerous place for a black American is a black neighborhood.” ~ Trevor Thomas.
Only 25% of Americans killed by the police are black, even though they commit 37% of all violent crimes. Blacks are 13% of our population. They commit 55% of the murders, 61% of robberies, and 45% of violent assaults. Therefore, they would naturally be arrested more often than Asians, whites, or Hispanics. They are also far more likely to resist arrest, which is the reason for police violence.
Consider that police violence against men is vastly more common than against women. We all know this is because men commit far more crime, are much more violent by nature, and massively more likely to fight the police. Ninety-six percent of people killed by the police are men.
White Americans are twice as likely to be killed by police as Asian Americans. Still, no one thinks this is because of racism toward whites. Asian Americans only commit half as much crime as whites.
According to the Washington Post, there are 375 million police interactions with citizens per year in America. In 2019, 999 of those interactions resulted in a citizen shot dead by police (0.0003%). Nine were unarmed blacks (0.000003%). In only one of those was the criminal not resisting arrest (0.0000003%). Black Lives Matter and Democrat politicians call this "an epidemic of police killings of unarmed black men." Keep in mind, to the media, "unarmed" merely means "not brandishing a gun." Wielding a baseball bat menacingly is considered "unarmed."
Sixty million Americans interact with the police at least once annually. Eleven million are arrested. Only 1% resist arrest. When police forcibly arrest someone resisting, 98% of the suspects suffer no injury or a mild injury. Sixty thousand police officers are assaulted each year. A cop of any race is 18 times more likely to be murdered by a black male than to kill an unarmed black male. Over the past decade, black males, 6% of our population, are 42% of cop-killers, reports the Washington Post.
A 2016 study published in Injury Prevention found that black Americans are not more likely to be injured or killed by police than white Americans during traffic stops. The same study also found that white people face a higher risk of being killed during an arrest.
Criminology & Public Policy reports that what really exists is “reverse racism” bias of police shootings that reflects law enforcement fear of the consequences of a minority death, “rooted in people’s concerns about the social and legal consequences of shooting a member of a historically oppressed racial group.”
A 2019 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that white officers are no more likely than black or Hispanic officers to shoot black civilians. In fact, the research shows that black police officers are more likely to shoot black suspects than white police officers are, believed to be because white officers know they will be subject to media scrutiny following a fatality.
Research by Washington State University found the police exhibit a propensity to fire on white suspects faster than black suspects and were also more likely to shoot unarmed whites.
Black scholar, Dr. Roland J. Fryer of Harvard, performed the most comprehensive study ever and concluded, to his own amazement, the opposite of what he expected to find: "The results are startling. Blacks are 23.5 percent less likely to be shot by police than whites in an interaction. Police officers were 47% less likely to discharge their weapon without first being attacked if the suspect was black than if the suspect was white. White officers were no more likely to shoot unarmed blacks than unarmed whites."
As Alan J. Levine notes in Chronicles: "The number of people killed by police every year has fallen. Meanwhile, the number of police killed in the line of duty every year has grown."
Arrested for Driving while Black
The myth is that black men are routinely “arrested for driving while black.” It is total nonsense. According to the Police-Public Contact Survey, regularly run by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, white men are more likely than black men to have contact with the police, 21% vs. 18%. White men average 0.35 contacts with the police per year, while the figure is 0.32 for black men. Only 0.08 of both white and black men are injured each year by law enforcement.
During the 2020 riots across 130 cities by Antifa and Black Lives Matter, a common sight was young people marching around with their hands up chanting, "Hands up! Don't shoot!" This comes from the urban myth that Michael Brown was shot dead in 2014 by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer while surrendering with his hands up, begging not to be shot. That is a total fabrication. Obama's Justice Department and his Attorney General Eric Holder both said it never happened after an intensive investigation launched specifically to find racism at fault. In fact, Brown was killed because he punched a policeman in the face and was trying to grab his gun. Still today, our colleges and corporations perpetuate the lie that a racist cop killed Michael Brown because he was black. His death kicked off the Black Lives Matter movement. In other words, it was founded upon a known lie.
In 2015, drug dealer Freddie Gray died in Baltimore. He had been arrested, and while being transported to the police station, he banged his own head against the side of the paddy wagon until he went into a coma. A week later, he died.
The civic leaders of the city immediately and publicly blamed police racism, and Baltimore erupted into massive riots. Six officers were arrested, half of them black. The state attorney who charged them, the judge who tried them, the mayor, the police commissioner and chief of police, almost all of the city council, the United States Attorney General, and the President were all black. Eventually, charges were dropped against three, and the other three were found not guilty.
Disheartened by the false accusation of departmental racism, the police backed off in minority neighborhoods. Baltimore descended into chaos. During the next four years, each year saw over 300 murders, and the victims were over 90% black.
Keith Lamont Scott
In 2016, Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed by a black police officer who worked for Charlotte's black police chief. The news media immediately put out the false story that he was killed because of racism. They further claimed that he was a fine family man killed for reading a book while black. The police found no book. They did find a gun in Scott's possession, who was, in fact, a demented, vicious, violent criminal.
The truth didn’t matter. Black Lives Matter led ‘peaceful protests’ that terrorized the city, targeted black law enforcement personnel, and caused millions of dollars in damages from vandalism, looting, and arson. The rioters held up ridiculous signs that read: “It Was a Book.”
In March 2020, the police in Louisville killed Breonna Taylor. The media quickly spread a false narrative that she was an innocent EMT, murdered while asleep in her bed by the racist police because she had black skin. Of course, riots ensued.
It turns out, not surprisingly to those with a smidgen of discernment, that all of that is a lie. When Breonna Taylor was tragically shot, she was not asleep, not in bed, and not an EMT (she had been fired after a dead body was found in the trunk of a car she rented, later identified as a dealer who worked for her drug kingpin boyfriend).
News reports claimed police burst into the apartment she shared with her boyfriend unannounced in the middle of the night. Not true. Neighbors testified the officers, who had a warrant, knocked at her door and loudly announced themselves. Breonna's boyfriend responded by shooting one of the officers. The police returned fire but missed him, hitting her accidentally. She was standing with him in a dark hallway.
In an interview, her ex-boyfriend did not blame the police, but her current boyfriend, for involving her in the drug trade and shooting at the police. He regularly used her car to deliver drugs and her apartment to stash drugs and drug money. A grand jury determined that the cops did nothing wrong.
Nasty Pelosi claimed the riots of 2020 were justified because “Republicans are trying to get away with the murder of George Floyd.” Where he died, in Minneapolis, all of the people in the chain of command from animal control to governor are Democrats. Medaria Arradondo was the Chief of Police for the terribly progressive Minneapolis. He was a ‘woke’ choice, an African American winner of an enormous lawsuit against the city for discrimination. He idolized Barack Hussein Obama, and like him, promised to fundamentally transform Minneapolis. As you might imagine, Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (DIE) were never far from his lips.
The riots devastated Minneapolis after the news media reported racist police officers murdered Mr. Floyd because he was black. 1,500 businesses, mostly owned by black entrepreneurs, were destroyed. Across America, the riots spread, burning buildings, looting stores, vandalizing property, tearing down statues, beating up innocent bystanders, assaulting police officers, and killing anyone who got in their way.
As Andrea Widberg reported, “The mob violence comes with demands to defund the police, cries of systemic racism, unbridled hatred for Donald Trump and his supporters, demands for the overthrow of the federal government, anti-white racism, and demands for redistribution of wealth. In other words, it's a leftist package deal.”
As it happens, an autopsy of Floyd, a violent felon, not a choirboy as first painted, shows he died from an overdose of fentanyl. The chief medical examiner had to confess that Floyd had taken not only "a fatal level of fentanyl” but also three times a lethal amount. He was higher than a Georgia pine. He also had other drugs in his system, as well as suffering from obesity and acute heart disease.
The rioters loved to chant, "I can't breathe," during their bouts of destruction, mimicking what were said to be George Floyd's last words. He couldn't breathe because his body's reaction to the fentanyl filled his lungs with fluid. He was deranged, foaming at the mouth, and resisting arrest. Four police officers could not get him into a car. Their training manual calls Floyd's condition "excited delirium" from drugs, making him extremely dangerous. The book instructs officers in this situation to immobilize the suspect on the ground with a knee on him and call an ambulance. That is what they did.
The death of Jacob Blake at the hands of the police sparked horrible riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Democrat Governor Evers fanned the flames when he immediately blamed the death on "systematic racism" before knowing any facts about the case. There was a warrant for Blake's arrest for rape. He resisted arrest and fought with two cops. He was shot after he went to his car to grab his knife.
Are Courts and Prisons Racist?
To Democrats, any racial disparity automatically means there must be racism hiding somewhere in the woodpile. In 2018, 110,845 women were sent to jail or prison in America, while 1,354,313 men were incarcerated. Does that mean that men are being picked on? Or that female criminals are enjoying ‘female privilege?’ If the Left wants ‘equity,’ either a million male prisoners should be released each year—or a million more women incarcerated.
Since blacks murder at eight times the rate whites do, it would make sense that eight times as many are in prison for murder. However, only six times as many are. These are not nice folks. Of those arrested for murder, 90% had been previously arrested and had an average of a dozen priors. Half had a prior arrest for violent crime, 40% had a prior arrest related to guns, and a fifth of them had 20 priors or more.
Hillary Clinton loved to spread her incessant lie that “the criminal justice system is infected with systemic racism. Race determines how people are treated in the criminal justice system. Blacks are more likely than whites to be arrested, charged, convicted, and incarcerated for doing the same thing.” FALSE.
As Heather Mac Donald writes in City Journal: “Criminologists have tried for decades to prove that the overrepresentation of blacks in prison is due to criminal-justice racism. After massive scientific research on charging and sentencing, they have been forced to the same conclusion: Racial differences in offending patterns, not racial bias by police and other officials, are the principal reason that such greater proportions of blacks than whites are arrested, prosecuted, convicted and imprisoned. Racial disparities in sentencing decisions are nonexistent.
“Look at the massive disparities in criminal offending in New York City. Blacks commit over three-quarters of all shootings, though they are 23% of the city’s population. Add Hispanic shootings to black shootings, and you account for 98% of all shootings in New York City. Whites are 34% of the city’s population; they commit less than 2% of all shootings. Virtually every time the police are called out because someone has been shot—they are given a description of a minority suspect.” (Since 1991, the number of yearly shootings by the New York Police Department has declined by two-thirds.)
Chris Boland debunks another myth in American Thinker: “Scholars and pundits often argue that the disproportionate criminal behavior of African American males comes about because of the poverty that racism creates. But the facts tell us that most poor people, those on public assistance, are not Black. They are white, and their rates of crime are significantly lower than African Americans. It is not poverty that causes the differences in rates of criminality.”
Here is part of a letter sent out to parents by a school in New York: “There’s a killer cop sitting in every school where white children learn. I’m tired of white people reveling in their state-sanctioned depravities, snuffing out black lives with no consequences. As black bodies drop like flies around us by violent white hands. White mothers are raising culturally deprived children who think black death is okay. That’s where the problem is — with white children being raised from infancy to violate black bodies with no remorse or accountability.”
I keep hearing that "America needs to have an honest conversation about race." To me, that means we should tell the whole truth. But the whole truth is not told because it is politically incorrect. The truth is a tidal wave of black on white crime over the last few decades that few will mention.
Take 2018, for example. In that year, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, there were 547,948 acts of violence perpetrated by black offenders against white victims, compared to 56,915 acts of violence committed by white offenders against black victims. Extrapolate that over 30 years and you've got 16 million white victims of racial crime that it is taboo to mention for fear of being called racist for mentioning it, including approximately 700,000 rapes.
Black people are disproportionately murdered, but at least 93% of the time by other black people. American blacks have killed 324,000 other blacks in 35 years.
Every year, blacks in the United States murder about 500 white human beings. But this number never generates national media outrage, nor has any particular cases where blacks murdered whites. White-on-black killing automatically draws scrutiny and protests. The fact is that individual blacks are 12 times more likely to kill a white person than to be killed by a white person.
It’s easy to get the impression that whites commit most interracial murders. The favorite image of blacks in film and television is the victim of bigotry, including by our criminal justice system. But they are shown as being far less criminal than they are in the real world. In real life, blacks commit over a third of all violent crimes and more than half of all murders. You wouldn't believe that from watching television, where blacks commit only eight percent of murders and other crimes. In real life, a white person is ten times more likely to be assaulted or murdered by a black person than the other way around. But TV shows blacks as victims of white criminals twice as often. I only mention this because it is yet another severe skewing of reality.
As Jeffrey Folks writes, “If there is one step that can be taken now toward improving the situation, it is to face the facts honestly. It doesn't help to pretend that blacks are the sole victims of interracial violence; they are the perpetrators as well and to a disproportionate extent. Even now, to speak of these and similar crimes is to invite the charge of racism, as if simply speaking the truth were somehow wrong. Clearly, a completely biased double standard exists in the way interracial crimes are reported.”
The Left is so concerned about the statistics on interracial crime becoming known that it has successfully pressured many police departments to conceal the race of criminals and victims in recent years.
The Narrative of the Left is a Big Lie
As I have demonstrated, the politically correct narrative of the Left that dominates our schools, universities, media, and Democrat politicians is a BIG LIE. The narrative is that the racist police are mass-murdering blacks, white people are violent racists, and America is a racist country. America is the least racist decent-sized country on the planet, and Americans are the least racist of all nationalities.
The purpose of the narrative is to create self-loathing in white people and hatred of white people in all others. There are also enormous sums of money to be made by claiming victimhood. The narrative is used to cover up black men's violence toward their fellow citizens—a smokescreen. At bottom, its source comes from a deep hatred of President Trump, America, Free Enterprise, Individual Freedom, Conservatives, and Christianity.
When confronted with the truth, a typical leftist will respond, "What do you expect? Look what your great-great granddaddy did to their great-great granddaddy!" However, that is something no one knows. For all you know, my great-great granddaddy helped blacks escape from a plantation, or worked on the Underground Railroad, or died for blacks on the battlefield at Shiloh. Our education system is so rotten that it creates hatred among some black citizens who should feel gratitude. The luckiest day of their lives was the day they were born in America.

Vivian Coblentz ~ Thank you for coming over to check out my piece. I appreciate your gracious compliments, and I am well pleased that you find my article needful. Val Karas ~ Thank you for reading my article. Your comments are right on the money. Perfectly put. You are right about generalizations. Thomas Sowell once said there are greater differences within groups of people than between groups of people. As you said so well, "Cops are also only humans, and the last time I checked, humans are not perfect, meaning that a badge does not make one immune from their stupidity. News media is much to blame, because they get paid to promote sensationalism ..."

firstname.lastname@example.org ~ It is always a pleasure to hear from you, old friend. Thank you for reading my piece, and offering up your valued observations. The Nietzsche quote is apropos and powerful. "The myth of systemic racism" is tearing our country apart, and will be the subject of an upcoming article. You are surely right about the "cognitive dissonance" that is driving many of my fellow Americans nuts. Just as bad, as you noted, is "The fake media."
Vivian Coblentz on March 03, 2021:
I love all your statistics and the truth behind the deaths of black people by police that sparked the riots. It is very eye-opening, and I hope those who have bought into the lie will come across this article. The media and politicians keep telling the same lies, and people just believe what they are told, like sheep. No one on the Left is interested in facts/statistics or the truth. The prefer the lie because they want to spread division and anarchy--they are demonically inspired. This piece is so well-written and much needed in our increasingly fascist culture.

MG Singh emge ~ Thank you for coming over to read my work. I appreciate you sharing your point of view as well. On the issue of oppressed people committing more crime, does that hold true worldwide? In other words, there are minorities in many cultures that were oppressed, for one glaring example the Jews in Europe before Israel was born, and Jews in Arab lands still today: Do they commit more crime?
James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on March 03, 2021:
Kyler J Falk ~ Thank you for taking the time to read my article and respond with such a fascinating commentary.
You make an excellent point about ‘discretion law,’ that has many applications besides race. For example, it has been well known for all of my lifetime that a pretty girl is more likely to get off from a speeding ticket from a male officer than a grizzled biker. And there are so many other variables, time of day, weather conditions, traffic, and most of all, the attitude one portrays when engaged by the police.
I had a cousin, since deceased, who was pulled over, and the cop saw a joint sitting in open view in his ashtray. The cop pointed at it and asked my cousin to give it to him. Instead, he ate it. The cop pulled him out of the car and hit him on the back and shins with his nightstick. Cousin John was in his early 20s. He went home and showed my uncle the bruises, saying, “I think I should sue them!” My uncle replied, “Forget that son. You deserved it. You shouldn’t have done that.” The Greatest Generation was not into litigation.
It is true that many people are more suspicious of some groups than others. If some groups stopped being well known for breaking the law, often with violence, I believe that would go away. In other words, in the real world, it is justified. We get alarmed when a fox is near the henhouse because we know their patterns of behavior. We would not be so alarmed by an animal that is not a carnivore.
You are right that anecdotes can be used to excuse nearly anything. It is statistical fact, for instance, that children from intact families become more successful adults—as a rule. But someone can always say, “Well I was raised feral in the wild by wolves and won a Nobel Prize!”
I appreciate your gracious compliments of my work. And you are most welcome.
ValKaras on March 02, 2021:
People are constantly tuned into collective consciousness which makes them to constantly generalize, forgetting about enormous individual differences and variables. So, it's impossible to tell how racial police are, while some isolated extremes don't define the whole force. Cops are also only humans, and the last time I checked, humans are not perfect, meaning that a badge does not make one immune from their stupidity. News media is much to blame, because they get paid to promote sensationalism, oftentimes creating an exaggerated picture of events that's highly emotionally charged.

The truth is out there regarding the myth of systemic racism but there's a cognitive dissonance in relation to the subject, that causes many to not look into the hard facts. The fake media doesn't help either.
As you mentioned, "there does need to be an honest dialog on race" but the problem is that it's a truth many refuse to hear!

KC McGee ~ Thank you for coming over to read my piece. Maybe my title should be changed. What I meant by it was, "Do the police treat blacks worse than others because of the color of their skin?" I didn't mean what is in the hearts and minds of each and every one of the 700,000 law enforcement officers.
You are certainly right that the Left has been gradually expanding and expanding their peculiar definition of the word 'racist' until it now bears no resemblance to its dictionary definition. Today, to have a colorblind society, the dream of King, the Left says is racist.
MG Singh emge from Singapore on March 01, 2021:
I read your article and found it very interesting. You have raised very interesting points. The fact is the black is more prone to crime because for almost 300 years he has been suppressed. Scientists of human behavior can examine this aspect. It is the duty of the police to establish order and solve crimes so when more blacks are committing crimes they are liable to face greater police action.

Kyler J Falk from California on March 01, 2021:
I think it would be accurate to say that it isn't nearly all cops, or even a portion worthy of widespread remark that are racist. However, policies such as discretion laws are rooted in what could be called racism accurately. That is to say, if applying a characteristic to an entire race regardless of the fact of such application is racist, then all cops are racist.
During my time studying at the Criminal Justice Academies we were presented with the truth of discretion laws by being asked a question and having to respond to the scenario at hand. That scenario/question was: You have two vehicles racing down the road, both match the description of a vehicle involved in an earlier incident, and you can only pull one over while the other gets away. In one vehicle you have three white men, and in the other you have a Mexican, a Middle Easterner, and an African American. Which one do you pull over?
Mind you this class was a predominantly non-white class, where only three of us and one of six teachers were white-skinned. Everyone except one white female answered that they would pull over the one with the darker-skinned people. That is the correct answer, as it turns out this was a real scenario and it was in fact the dark-skinned individuals who were involved in the previous incident.
The key note in all this here, though, is that it still would've been the right decision to pull over the darker-skinned individuals based on statistics and probabilities. Can objective statistics be racist? No, and that's an unarguable no, and thus we come back to discretion laws.
With discretion laws, police could get away with racial profiling so long as they remain within proper procedures. How often does this happen based on statistics? Not often at all, but anecdotal claims would have us believe otherwise.
This is why I always tell people that they need to call in any event they feel was unlawful, because the police force is obligated to investigate themselves with the utmost attention to detail and care. Just recently I had the Buena Park Police Department investigated, and it ended up in a new code system for active COVID-19 cases. As an overwhelming majority, the police care about everyone, and racism is separate from the job of enforcing the law.
A great topic, as always James, and thanks for writing this article!
Mark Richardson from Utah on March 01, 2021:
Solutions...I have recently wondered if a solution should be that the police should be more reactive than proactive. Perhaps there are many that sincerely feel they are targeted before they have done anything wrong.
KC McGee from Where I belong on March 01, 2021:
The answer to the question (title) of your article would depend on how racist today is defined. Half the country defines racist one way (defined by the dicitionary), the other half the the country defines it another (defined by Marxist in America). One side will answer your question as; Some are (if they were honest). The other half would answer; Absolutely, all cops are racist.
And there lies the problem. America is divided on how racism/racist is defined. And now it's a battle for which one will be fully embraced. And which ever side wins, it will determine the future of this nation.
