As the media hyperventilates over Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, it may bode well for US law enforcement moving forward on the matter which forced Comey to reopen the investigation of Hillary Clinton just before the election. The reopened investigation mysteriously came to nothing, except accusations by Hillary Democrats that Comey swung the election toward Trump.
Whether one is a fan of Trump or not, a president choosing his Executive Branch heads is well within his purview and authority. Bill Clinton fired the incumbent FBI Director William Sessions soon after coming into office, so all the hyperventilating is over nothing. Any investigations begun under Comey will continue under the Interim Director, until the new director steps in and makes a determination. The Executive Branch investigating itself has always been problematic, which is why Congress has the authority to appoint special prosecutors.
With a key Clinton ally in the Justice Department gone, it will be interesting to see what, if anything, becomes of previously stalled investigations.
What we know about Anthony Weiner's laptop is tantalizing, since it has placed Comey in the strange position of being both a Clinton-hater and a Clinton-lover. A Clinton-hater, because he announced a re-opened investigation of Hillary Clinton just days before the election, which is blamed by some, including Hillary, for losing her the election. A Hillary-lover, for refusing to indict Hillary over crimes for which ordinary soldiers have been prosecuted. Neither did these soldiers intend to do anything wrong, but it didn't matter.
Comey is in fact a Hillary-lover, but was placed in an unusual and ticklish position. For those not familiar, here is what happened.
On September 21, 2016, the UK Daily Mail reported that former US Congressman Anthony Wiener had been "sexting" to a 15-year-old girl. Federal prosecutors weighed bringing serious charges against Wiener, including child pornography, a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence, but Wiener's lawyers wriggled him out of that one. Wiener was married to Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's vice chair for her 2016 campaign for president, and deputy chief of staff to Clinton when she was Secretary of State.
As a resut of the Daily Mail investigation NYPD police seized Wiener's laptop and cellphone, then subsequently turned them over to the FBI.
We do not know what was on the devices, but we do know that it was extraordinary enough to force Comey to re-open an investigation he would rather not have reopened. The knowledge NYPD had of the contents was breathing down his neck. If it was bad, NYPD knew it. New York has its own prosecution authority, and if the FBI did not do something, New York might.
How extraordinary? At the very least extraordinary enough to make Comey do something he didn't really want to do, to protect himself from charges of covering up for Hillary if worse came to worse, and the evidence came to light.
A widely-read online news site, True Pundit, quoted "law enforcement sources" as saying that the evidence on the laptop linked Clinton herself and some associates to money laundering, child exploitation, and pay to play through Clinton Foundation, to name just a few.
In fact, in a now-famous tweet General Michael Flynn called attention to the True Pundit article and said:
U decide - NYPD Blows Whistle on New Hillary Emails: Money Laundering, Sex Crimes w Children, etc...MUST READ!
After the extraordinary announcement of the investigation, which would normally only occur when it was all but certain that indictments were coming, Comey suddenly announced there was nothing to see. Either Comey had a lack of prosecutorial judgment extraordinaire, or things were back in control, as mobsters say.
With congressional subpoenas announced for Flynn associates indicating Congress is going in for the kill, it will be interesting to see if the Justice Department pursues whatever was on Anthony Wiener's laptop.
