What used to be a 24-hour news cycle—yesterday’s murder buried by today’s scandal overshadowed by tomorrow’s political leak—has been replaced by 24-week ongoing overlapping news cycles from Trump Impeachment Smackdown to Coronavirus Lockdown to George Floyd Chokedown to Mob Mentality Burndowns to Nonstop Electioneering Meltdowns, constantly covered, reported, repeated, reconsidered, opinionized, criticized, studied, detailed, deliberated, debated by endlessly recycled news cycle rundowns.

So while the actual presidential Election Day is always the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November the actual Presidential Election Season is never over. Election Season has become a year round never-ending Open Season on the electorate.

One thing that hasn’t changed as so many naive cable commentators have asserted is that every year the campaign rhetoric has become the nastiest in the nation’s history, “going to new extremes of negativity.”

A fascinating read on the subject of campaigning crudities is Conventional Wisdom and American Elections (Fourth Edition, published 11/12/2019) with the subtitle of “Exploding Myths, Exploring Misconceptions.” (The Fifth edition might be subtitled “Exploding buildings, Exploiting Conceptions.”)

American politicking has a dastardly nasty past. Thomas Jefferson’s foes warned that he would legalize prostitution and burn Bibles if he was elected. Andrew Jackson was called a murderer, his wife a bigamist and his mother a prostitute.

Running against each other in 1800 Founding Father Tom Jefferson’s supporters called Fellow Founder John Adams a “hideous hermaphroditical character which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman.” An Adams leaflet called Jefferson “a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father.” Of course today those “slurs” would be surefire vote-getters.

Grover Cleveland was accused of fathering an illegitimate kid. Abe Lincoln was called everything from ape to ghoul to traitor and his wife was accused of collaborating with the Confederacy.

Warren G. Harding was accused of having “a Negro great grandmother” and a great grandfather “with Negro blood.” With proper political correctness updating those “slurs” would also be surefire vote getters today.

So that’s what we’ve come to expect from the left-right self-serving two-party politicacrat system pounding on each other in a venal attempt to grasp political power from one another at the expense and exasperation of the American populace.

Since libertarians don’t belong in that old nonsensical binary left-to-right schema we can sit on the sidelines with our Non-Aggression Principle in hand and play Whac-A-Mole on everyone’s skull with the other hand. And since the latest edition of the afore-referenced book of political myths and misconceptions covers more than just repugnant political mudslinging—misconceptions about third parties, voter turnout, choosing running mates, election polls, etc.—so too does this edition of Libertarian Opinionizer.


Trump vs. Hillary

Yes the unexpected win of Trump over Hillary in 2016 still isn’t gone from the ceaselessly overlapping news cycle cycles for the simple reason that it still has lessons for Trump vs. Biden in 2020.

Forget the finger-pointing and lame blame-shaming games. It wasn’t just that no one was voting for Trump but actually against Hillary or that more people consciously preferred a swamp-draining political Outsider over a lifelong deep state professional politics-as-usual Insider.

Everyone was simply holding their noses and voting conservative vs liberal as always.

Hillary lead Trump in opinion polls right up to and including Election Day in 2016, 48% to 44%, yet Trump won the presidency to the teeth-gnashing and hair-tearing of the Left World.

The majority of Republicans are conservatives. Conservatives are called conservatives because, guess what, they’re conservative.

Generally speaking, Conservatives don’t like being yelled at by loud, angry, arrogant Progressives, Snowflakes, Social Justice Warriors, Identity Politics Bigots, race-baiters, the whole Wokeness Crowd and millions of other Alt-Left Collectivist Groupthinkers.

They didn’t like Candidate Hillary calling them “a Basket of Deplorables” or President Obama cartoonizing them with “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

They don’t like being challenged or threatened or intimidated or physically attacked. They don’t like hostility or confrontations. When pollsters call about their voting preferences they’re likely to say “I don’t know” or “undecided” and hang up with a loud click of their old landline telephone receivers.

All of which seriously skews the polling results.

Then on voting day they go out and quietly hold their noses and vote for Trump. Game over.


Trump vs Biden

Many will claim that most voters will be voting not for Trump but against Biden while others will claim that voters will be voting not for Biden but against Trump.

That’s always true in every election, which explains all the nose-holding. But this time there will be an even deeper for/against game at play.

Voting for Biden for President is actually voting for Biden’s VP running mate for President whoever that may be. If Biden wins the DNC will see to it that Good Ol’ Crazy Uncle Joe will quickly be clinically diagnosed as suffering from senility, dementia, Alzheimers, feeble-mindedness, advanced dotage and otherwise mentally incapacitated and cognitively unfit under the 25th Amendment so he can be pushed aside for the VP to become Prez.

A vote for Biden is a vote for Placeholder-In-Chief. Even if he’s propped up in sitting position as a sitting president his “live” appearances will be carefully simulated with holograms and electronic voice cloning techniques so his voters and backers won’t be quite so embarrassed. He will never be an actual President of anything. He will simply be a vote-gathering bucket who appeals to those who vote with their feelings rather than their brains.

A vote for Biden is really a vote for his VP for President.


Right vs left

Just as endless news cycles are endlessly recycled so too should the following obvious lesson be repeatedly recycled in the hopes that some folks will actually get it:

The majority of Republicans are conservatives. Conservatives are called conservatives because they’re conservative.

Conservatives don’t like being yelled at by loud, angry, arrogant Progressives, Snowflakes, Social Justice Warriors, Identity Politics Bigots, the whole Wokeness Crowd and millions of other Alt-Left Collectivist Groupthinkers.

So being conservative as conservatives are they will bite their tongues, grieve over the loss of their businesses, wipe the tears from their eyes, hold their noses, and then on voting day they will go out and quietly vote for Trump.

And here’s the part the Alt-Left seems to be ignoring: Non-white non-conservative business owners and workers don’t like having their jobs or their lifelong family-owned businesses invaded and trashed and robbed and burned for any reason, no matter how much they might agree with Black Lives Matter or stand up for the right to protest any more than white conservative small business owners and workers like it.

So many progressives, and liberals, along with the old line classical liberals who never forgot what “liberal” actually meant, will bite their lips, grieve over the loss of their country, wipe the tears from their eyes, and then on voting day they will go out and quietly vote for Trump.

After all, anyone with two brain cells to rub together understands that the peaceful protesters are being used as cover by the mindless mobs who are actually the ones doing the devastation to their businesses and their jobs.

And then there are all those undecided uncommitted free range independent small business owners and workers that can’t easily be categorized as white or non-white, liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat who will quietly exercise their nontraditional political tendencies, hold their noses and vote for Trump because they know The Trumpster has helped more small businesses and created more jobs than any other president in history, whether a black skunk with white stripes or a white skunk with black stripes.

Matters not to them.


Libertarian vs All Others

But wait: Don’t play with the notion that this is some sort of libertarian Trump reelection endorsement. This is, as indicated by the title, simply one libertarian’s reflections on the upcoming elections. It could just as easily go the other way, with Biden’s nose-holders outnumbering Trump’s nose-holders at the polls.

Libertarians, who have learned to take the long view, hold their noses and vote for the Libertarian candidate because in spite of almost never winning an election higher than Animal Control Officer they know, or ought to know by now, that the true purpose of the Libertarian Party is to introduce people to the libertarian philosophy, not to win political offices.

They know that politics, if they have those two or more brain cells to rub together, is merely the practical application of philosophy. They understand that only when the libertarian philosophy takes hold and spreads like new grass across society’s weedy lawn will the politics of Libertarianism become strong and meaningful.

Here, in closing, for no good reason at all, are a few convenient touchstones not covered in the Reflections above:

Conservatives: “Holier than thou.”

Liberals: “Smarter than thou.”

Monument Molesting Mobs: “Woker than thou.”

Libertarians: “Freer than thou.”

Five myths about Fox, MSNBC and CNN Or are they myths? While CNN and MSNBC seem to spew a steady stream of liberalism and Fox pushes non-stop conservatism only Fox offers several token liberal guests and a growing number of libertarian regulars.

Time to Join the 24/7 News Cycle? In 2018 Jake Leonard of Heartland Newsfeed insisted it was time for libertarians to “establish our own media conglomerate and build it up larger than that of Fox News or CNN.” All that’s needed is a few billionaire libertarians.

I can't disagree with much of anything you say. The goal is to destroy our entire society so it can be rebuilt from the scorched-earth bottom up as yet another failed and bloody attempt to create an authoritarian collectivist state that benefits only those at the very top with the power, wealth and egomania that they seek. I know, sounds like a conspiracy theory but I'm having more and ;more doubts about the "theory" part.

Gary, I would love to have a alternative to Trump that I felt was not a puppet.

Someone more unifying, and far less divisive than Trump.

Tulsi Gabbard was my pick for that, but her emphasis to stop the illegal wars against other nations and desire to shut down the influence the military establishment has over our foreign policies put her in the cross-hairs and the DNC made sure her campaign died a quick death.

That the DNC and other interested parties were willing to cart out Clinton so she could accuse Tulsi of being a puppet of Putin proved to me Tulsi was legitimate and would have changed things for the better (or try to).

What are we seeing today?

Books are being censored, people are being censored and banned (including the President!), movies are being banned, heroes who helped build this nation are being villainized and their statues destroyed.

I don't need to tell you what this is reminiscent of if you know your history.

This type of transformation is always... always... followed up with the deaths of many millions of people.

The tactics we see in play right now are straight out of the books written by Marx and think tanks like the Frankfurt School and its Critical Theory and Political Correctness.

Most people don't believe this could happen in their country... they never do, until its too late to do anything about it.

Ken, I don't disagree with your assessment. And while I'm not a Trump supporter I could easily become one if he would do this:

Publicly announce "I don't give a damn if I get reelected, my job is to protect our citizens" and then use whatever laws and forces he legally can to send armed troops of police, guards or military to seize and arrest all violent actors in DEFENSE of life, limb and property while supporting the right to peacefully demonstrate. There would be apoplectic outrage spewing from the left but I believe he would be reelected in a landslide.

As a libertarian I cannot support open violent disregard for the non-aggression principle against coercion, intimidation and fraud. One cannot compromise with violence.

Garry, I asked in jest, however now that I look at it, if you remove the Nazi column, they do all fall under the Democrat umbrella and are the power behind the current "progressive" protests, statue removal, efforts to censor all opposition, etc.

I wonder how quickly they will move to shut down all opposition, permanently, and how violent their efforts will get, should they attain power in all three branches of our government in 2020?

I believe many of these factions learned their lesson after Obama's Admin didn't complete the change they were looking for, and then Clinton's loss meant many of their gains (most that had been hidden in new regulations, new programs, the TPP and Paris Accord) all the changes that would have been enacted under her Presidency, were undone or retracted by Trump.

Hi Ken.I found the original chart labeled only as “group comparison chart” on a Facebook page. No mention of the Democratic Party or any other description, just a comparison of the similarities of various authoritarian groups that could be seen as “Hate Groups.” I added the Libertarian column myself to illustrate the blatant contrast between libertarians and those others.
