10 Things You Can Do To Protect Earth From Global Warming

Author:

As we all know, the world is changing due to global warming caused by human activities. To this day, we already noticed small changes to this planet including temperature increase which lead to melting of glaciers leading to an increase of ocean level which can lead to certain islands being submerged! That is definitely a big problem since the human population will only increase and we really can't afford a decrease of available land. So, here are the 10 things you can do to slow down the impact of global warming.

Also, before I get onto this list, this article was inspired by the last article where I wrote about the places to visit before they disappear. Well, most of those places will disappear because of global warming! That is why I want more and more people to contribute to helping this planet reducing the impact of global warming. Alright, on to this list.

10-things-you-can-do-to-protect-earth-from-global-warming

1) Reduce the consumption of meat

This may sound difficult but meat requires a lot of resources to produce. According to scientists, meat and dairy only provide around 18% percent calories and 37% protein. Unfortunately, it uses up to 83% of farmlands and produces over 60% of the agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, reducing the amount of meat consumption can reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions which will reduce the impact of global warming.

2) Eating what you buy

Around 40 percent of the food we purchase ends up in the landfill. That is a huge amount of energy wasted since around 10 percent of the energy of the US is used in growing, processing, packaging and shipping food. If we would reduce the amount of food we waste, we will likely reduce the amount of food produced which will end up reducing the amount of energy used to produce food, which means less greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere, which means a reduction of the impact of global warming!

3) Reducing the use of plastics

Think about every piece of plastic you use daily. This includes the Ziploc bags, the garage bags, the plastic bottles, and the plastic straws. All those plastic are produced by coal making it very energy intensive. The burning of coal also releases tons of gas that are bad for the environment. You may think it isn’t a big deal since you can just recycle it all but it is difficult to recycle plastic and most of it ends up in the dump which causes more problems outside of global warming! That is why to reduce the impact of global warming, we need to reduce the amount of coal used for producing plastic by using less. This is also why if you have noticed, many restaurants have started to use glass for their cups instead of plastic. Yes, glass may be a bit fragile but it is much easier to recycle than plastic.

4) Driving more fuel-efficient cars

I’m pretty sure you all have heard of this. No, this does not mean buying a Tesla for 50 thousand dollars. What this means is by driving only what you need. This saves money for gas and for your planet. Think about it, what is the point of driving a pickup truck all day if you aren’t even going to use that backspace? That is just wasting your money on gas and you are doing harm to the planet. This is also a reason why electric cars are becoming more and more common and the price of most electric cars are going down. In about 10 years, the cheapest Tesla would probably be around 30,000 dollars.

5) Using Public transportation

When we think about global warming, we always blame those big busses since they are worse in gas compared to our cars. However, the truth is, they are only about 3 times as worse as an average car, but a bus typically holds 20 people. That means 20 fewer cars on the road! This may be a bit inconvenient to you but you are helping this planet from using public transportation. You are also saving money and effort since you won’t have to drive or spend much money on gas. The bus tickets are definitely cheaper than gas.

6) Carpooling

Carpooling is becoming more and more popular because it helps the environment. Having multiple people in one vehicle going to the same place is so much better than having multiple vehicles going to the same place. That way, fewer cars will be on the road. On top of that, there are also other advantages of carpool such as the express lane on the highway where you would need at least one person with you to be in. That lane is much safer to be in and much faster.

7) Invest in energy- efficient appliances

Ever since energy- efficient appliances became available, it has kept 2.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide out of the air. To put that into scale, that is about the same amount of carbon from nearly 440 million cars per year! Energy efficient appliances are becoming cheaper. According to environmental scientists, it has become one of the cheapest ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. So, to benefit the environment, try to look for the Energy Star label which will be an indication that it is more efficient.

8) Reducing the amount of water we use

People often tell you to save water but a lot of times, they don’t exactly explain to you why. Well, there are many reasons but one of the main reasons is that it can reduce carbon pollution. Think about it, in order for water to be used, it needs to be pumped, then heated. This process takes a lot of energy! This is why it is best to avoid long showers and fix leakings. The EPA estimates that if just one out of every 100 homes were retrofitted with water-efficient fixtures, about 100 million kilowatt- hours of electricity per year would be saved which will avoid 80,000 tons of global warming pollution.

9) Use more efficient light bulbs

LED light bulbs are just as bright as other light bulbs but they can use up to 80 percent less energy. They are a bit more expensive to buy but in the long run, a 10 - watt LED that replaces a 60-watt bulb will save you 125 dollars over the light bulb's life. If you are saving your money and helping the environment, that is a win-win.

10) Unplug outlets for unused devices

A typical household outlet is powering around 65 different devices. Normally, people don’t unplug unused appliances because it is inconvenient and I agree- especially in the kitchen. However, what I am talking about are computers, laptops, TV where everyone keeps plugged in even when they are fully charged. Even though those devices are fully charged, it still will add up to the outputs of the power plants which will require energy to produce electricity. So, it is best not to leave fully charged devices plugged in.

So, those are 10 ways you can reduce the amount of carbon pollution in the atmosphere. If you have noticed, many cities are already adjusting to a more green lifestyle. I believe that your small efforts will help us save this planet from global warming. Now, I would like to take a poll, does this article motivates you to help mitigate global warming?

As we all know, the world is changing due to global warming caused by human activities.

B: What do you have to base that conclusion?

-------------------

reducing the amount of meat consumption can reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions which will reduce the impact of global warming.

B: Meat that is organic is better than its alternatives, and how and how much will it reduce the impact of global warming.

-------------------

Around 40 percent of the food we purchase ends up in the landfill.

B: Wouldn't a better solution be to process the waste rather than putting it in landfills. Burning garbage has been tried and it can produce energy, and it is less for the landfill.

------------------

noticed, many restaurants have started to use glass for their cups instead of plastic.

B: That uses water and detergents to clean the glasses. And again, why give up on recycling plastic. Technology needs to find many of the solutions, conservation doesn't do it with an increasing population. Another billion people will be added soon, and maybe 10 billion population by the end of the century.

-----------------

4) Driving more fuel-efficient cars

b: Adding Ethanol to the fuel makes it less efficient than gasoline. Hydrogen would be the better long term solution.

People and commercial transportation have too much invested to change to electric, and then these batteries will wind up in the dump.

----------------

5) Using Public transportation

B: Public transportation doesn't go where people need to go. It may work in places like NYC, but not very many other places.

CA failed to deliver on the High Speed Rail, and that could have taken a hundred thousand people off the planes in the travel of less than 500 miles. And we don't have electric planes.

B: Carpooling like public transportation doesn't go where people need to go. It can work for some, but not than many. We have tried it in CA and it just is too expansive of geography.

------------------

7) Invest in energy- efficient appliances

B: And with those savings, you say there is still a problem. Things should be getting better not worse. As these devices weren't around that long. Neither were electric vehicles. Trains switched from coal to diesel fuel, and now electric but you say there is still a problem.

-----------------

8) Reducing the amount of water we use

B:

California with its 38 million people have been forced to use these restrictive showers, and yet you don't see a difference?

---------------

9) Use more efficient light bulbs

This is true, but in CA we went through the compact fluorescent bulbs which were filled mercury and a nightmare to get rid of, but LED is better, and those are really the only kind out there now, and yet you don't see a difference?

-----------------

10) Unplug outlets for unused devices

B: How does a fully charged device use energy when it is off?

-----------------

California, Oregon and Washington have a total coastline along the Pacific Ocean of about 1,300 miles. With that coastline they could have several hundred to a thousand hydroelectric plants, and the same number of desalinization plants to get drinking water.

The ocean continually runs, while the Sun and wind don't.

Thirty states have a coastline: twenty-three with a coastline on the Arctic, Atlantic, and/or Pacific Ocean, and eight with a Great Lakes coastline; New York has coasts on both.
