Walmart Visa Debit Card
The Walmart MoneyCard is simply a prepaid debit card. You can choose between a card backed by Visa or MasterCard. Depending on your decision, you will be able to use your MoneyCard anywhere that company is taken. This is my review of the MoneyCard. If you shop at WalMart like most people do, you can find the prepaid card at most registers and the customer service desk.
How the MoneyCard Works: A Quick Overview
Again, the MoneyCard works like any debit card—but you don't need to have a bank account.
There are four types of MoneyCards: Basic, Plus, Specialty, and Preferred. You can get the Basic card for free by ordering it online; otherwise, expect to pay between $1.88 and $4 for the card.
Other fees include:
- $3 a month for a service fee.
For a Basic account, you cannot waive this monthly fee.
For Plus and Specialty accounts, this fee can be waived if you deposit at least $1,000 a month onto the card.
For Preferred accounts, this fee can be waived if you deposit at least $500 a month onto the card.
- $3 per loading (every time you put more money on the card at a Walmart store).
The only way you can avoid this fee is by creating a Preferred account. This means you have to pay $4 for the card—as you can see, after adding money to your card twice, this pays for itself.
- Fees for ATMs other than those owned by Walmart (which can only be found within Walmart stores). Walmart will charge a $2 fee for the use of any non-Walmart ATM on top of that ATM's fee. Even a balance inquiry at a non-Walmart ATM will cost $1.
When you buy the card in the store, you will receive a temporary card in the store and can load between $20 and $50 dollars on it as your initial balance. You will then need to activate it by calling 1-800-532-0936 or by going to Walmartmoneycard.com before you can use it or receive your permanent card. I suggest activating it online, because you can create an account, which will allow you to set up free email and cell phone alerts for balances and fees. If you set up your card for your son or daughter (you can get a second card for your account for a relative or significant other), an account has the additional benefit of being able to monitor their expenditures.
Make sure you do not lose your receipt for your card. It has your activation code, and you will need that to activate your temporary card and to get a permanent one. Once you have activated your card with all of your information, you will get your new card or cards sent to your address within in two weeks.
The Benefits of a Walmart MoneyCard
The two benefits of a Walmart MoneyCard are that you can use them online and anywhere Visa or MasterCard (depending on which you choose) is used.
That being said, a debit card from a regular bank has all of the safety of a Walmart MoneyCard without the fees—and many credit unions either have more ATMs or will pay for your ATM fees.
Also, neither a MoneyCard nor a debit card can be used to build credit or rebuild bad credit. At best, it will have no effect on your credit score.
Lastly, both debit cards and credit cards often have better rewards programs than Walmart's. I recommend shopping around. If you do not shop at Walmart, you might consider getting another prepaid debit card that will give you more benefits like AccountNow, where you get $25 dollars with your Direct Deposit and $20 for referring friends. Or you can consider a Russell Simmons card that has benefits like Bill Pay, Prescription Drug Discount Card, and other good benefits.
While there are lots of good prepaid debit cards out in the market, I only recommend considering one of these cards if you have lost your bank account or cannot get a real debit or credit card.
Overall, I believe that the WalMart MoneyCard is a good deal for someone with bad credit. Anybody of age can get one of these cards and will not have to worry about spending more money than he or she has, because you can only spend what you have on the card. You will avoid the hefty overdraft fees, and this card may help you get back on track spending only what you can afford.
How to Activate Your MoneyCard
Walmart MoneyCard Activation Number and Site
Activation number: 1-800-532-0936
Activation site (recommended): https://www.walmartmoneycard.com/walmart/activation/online-activation-init
What you will need to activate your card:
- The receipt
- Your address
- Your date of birth
- Your social security number
Once you have activated your card, the site will ask you if you want a second card for an additional $3. If you choose this option, the money will be taken out of your initial deposit, so I recommend to do this only if you are sharing the card with someone else, such as a significant other or child. Once you have completed your activation on your temporary card you will have to wait one or two weeks for you permanent card, which you will have to activate as well. Your account will then be automatically transferred to the permanent account number.
How to Add Money to Your Walmart MoneyCard
There are four different ways to add money to your new Walmart Card. I will explain each way to help you decide what is best for you.
1. With Cash at Walmart
At any participating Walmart store, you can add cash (anywhere from $20 to $1,100) to your MoneyCard account at the register. However, there is a $3 dollar fee to load your card. After loading your card, the money will be available to use instantly.
2. By Check at Walmart
You can load your government check or paycheck with no reload fee. This will save you $3 and any check cashing fees. The amount of the check must be between $20 and $1,500 dollars to be loaded. Also Walmart does check to verify that the check is good before cashing the check. This service is not available in CT, NJ, NY, RI.
3. Direct Deposit
You can also enroll in their direct deposit program and load you paycheck directly onto your card. This is another excellent option if you do not want fees for loading money into your account. You can find your account information on the walmartmoneycard.com website or at the 1-800 number. Once you have this info, give it to your payroll department, and they should be able to arrange for direct deposit.
4. With an Online Bank Transfer
Another way to add money to your card with no reload fees is to add money online from a bank, credit union, or other financial institution through an electronic money transfer. You can enjoy the convenience of reloading your card from work or home.
Highest WalMart Money Card fee is $2
What Are Posted and Pending Transactions?
A pending transaction is when you have authorized a purchase, but the final amount may not have been finalized. This money is on "hold" until the transaction is completed, which means that you cannot spend the money elsewhere. Many services that may involve additional charges (for example, hotels may charge additional fees for room service or missing towels, restaurants may charge the tip you have authorized, and car rentals may charge for damage) will put a hold on more money than you will actually spend.
A posted transaction is a transaction that has been finalized. Once a pending transaction is completed, the final amount will be deducted or credited to your account balance, and the status of your transaction will change from "pending" to "posted" on your statement history.
Special Transactions You Should Know about Before You Shop
Now your card is ready to use. Take warning: There are several types of transactions (see list below) which can put more funds than you actually spend on hold until the transaction is completed and closed out.
1. Gas Stations
When you use the credit function at the pump, you may cause an up to four-day hold of at least $35. This is because you swipe and authorize your card before pumping.
To avoid this and only charge the exact amount you pump, choose the debit function at the pump and use your 4 digit PIN. Better yet, I suggest going inside and pre-paying the attendant or cashier for the exact amount you would like to pump.
Be careful about remembering this, or you might try to spend money that you have to find it on hold.
When you eat (or drink) anywhere that usually requires a tip, the amount of your bill may be held for up to four days before the actual transaction is posted to your card. Make sure you have enough funds to cover any added tip. Usually I have had no problems with this, but you do need to be careful. Check your funds online to see if added funds are being held.
A "hold" of your estimated bill may be placed on your card when you check into a hotel, making that amount unavailable for other purchases. When you check out, the hold may take up to 10 days before it is removed. I did have this happen to me—the hotel held 100 dollars from my card—and I had to wait four days after I checked out for my money to be released. If you need it released earlier, you may be able to call the hotel's customer service.
5. Auto Rentals
You may use your card for final payment for a rental car bill. However, depending on the rental car company, a credit card may be necessary to reserve the rental. If you do reserve a car with a debit card, you may have a significant amount of money held for 60 days. Once, when I rented a car, the company held $300 dollars in my account, and it took a few days after returning the vehicles for the amount to be released.
6. Returning purchases
Store return policies may vary. You may receive a credit to your card, cash refund, or even store credit, depending on the particular store. A credit to your card may take up to 10 days to process before it's available for use. I have not returned any items using my card, so I have no extra tips for you here.
Student Edition Walmart MoneyCard
If you have a student in school, you can purchase the Student Edition Walmart MoneyCard. How this works is that you get another card linked to your account that your student can use. This is really no different than the previously mentioned option for a second card, and the fees are the same (you will be charged $3).
The benefit of a second card is that you can monitor you kid's spending, and you can add money to student's debit card anytime you add money to your own. See the fees below before you decide to purchase the Student Edition of the Walmart MoneyCard.
Walmart MoneyCard Fees
Make sure you check out the fees involved in getting a Walmart MoneyCard before you get one. Below is a list of fees associated with the card drawn from Walmart's website:

Email and Text Alerts
The MoneyCard comes with the free ability to check your balance through text and email alerts. This is a service offered by many debit cards, so if you decide to go with a different, ask about similar options.
You can set up your alerts to send you a message:
- When your balance falls below a certain amount
- Every day or week
- Whenever money is deposited in your account
Below is an example of one of these alerts (one that I actually received):
A direct deposit of $385.43 was received on 10/28 . Thank you for using Walmart MoneyCard.
You can also check your balance anytime via text. Text BAL and the last 4 digits of your card to 96411 (WM411) and you will get a text back with your balance.

I actually use a similar card from American Express, but I reload it at Walmart for free. I love it. I use it for online shopping. I am paranoid about someone getting my card number. Mine has no fees whatsoever except the $5 I paid for the card and an ATM fee if I go outside the designated area. Well written article. Good job!

I bought a walmartmoneycard like over a year and a half ago to buy things online never had a problem. Now all this time later, I want to buy something from a seller that doesn't accept paypal and I don't want to give my debit info so I found my old money card but when I logged onto my account it says my balance is -$6. Should I cancel the account and start a new one to avoid the fee or are they going to charge me the fee anyway once I reapply for a new card? I appreciate your time.

I just purchased one of these cards and loaded it with $500 at the time of purchase. Went home and activated online. It showed my $500. I went back and loaded another $450 so that I would have a total of $950 on card to make a tv purchse. Now online it does not show my original $500, only a balance of $450 WTH! It is like 1am and I am bawling. I cant afford to lose $500
Terri Wright on February 02, 2013:
The walmart money card is ok but they are some sneaky SOB's. I went last week to cash my income tax refund check- 1,200- I wanted to deposit 700 in my debit card getting the remainder in cash. First I thought I saw a tv commerical that advertised they only charged 1 dollar to cash the income tax check, no they said they never do that. Ok, that's alright, so then the kid cashing it was flustered so he said I will cash the whole thing and then do the deposit after that cause I get nervous and its easier for me that way. No problem I was very young once using a register and I totally understand plus he was a nice kid, had some pimples but he was cool. So he cashes the check counts it out and the amount he counts back is 1194. He charged me 3 to cash it and 3 for me to deposit in my account at this point I hadn't deposited but hey, you cant fight them so I just rolled with it. Then he takes 703 to deposit in the account so I said oh, Zak- that's the kids name- you already charged me for the check cashing remember. He says no m'am I did nt because for any check over 1000 its another 3 dollars so it took me 9 bucks to cash a check and deposit my own money. OK SO THAT DID TICK ME OFF. I mean I know they are running a business but how greedy can you get?? I wait all year for this check. I plan way in advance on things I need all year long. I live on social security and the money is my rent back for what I pay all year. Its not that much money but it just upset me that they have their hands in your pockets. It stinks. I spend beau coupe money there and last year I got mad at them around xmas for their similar hijinks. Just beware.

Josh on September 17, 2012:
Normally Azri, I would agree with you, but I purchased a Walmart Moneycard on Saturday and decided to only put $20 on it, because i didn't want to loose much money and only needed it to pay for a small bill , before they sent my personalized one...And gee surprise, it says my money is in the account and yet everytime I try to use it, every transaction comes up DECLINED!!! And yet, when I attached the card to my Google Wallet to use later on, it had no problems running that $1 "auth" temp charge through, and I thought hell if it does this, maybe this time, it will allow me to use it. So I try to use it to purchase a $9.99 item and my account has $19 on it and it came up...DECLINED!!! So how can it allow a temp charge to go through, but not a purchase? And to sum it up even worse, it says the funds are "pending" and have been for over 72 hours now, but it still keeps allowing temp charges to go through verifying that the card is active. So wtf!?!?!? Walmart, really? Is your card really that much hassle? If I had known I was going to be dealing with this shit, I would have just got a prepaid debit card from f****ing Visa or Mastercard and not your piece of ****. Even if it is sponsored by Visa, at least "their's" decline every transaction like it's candy. Thank you and have a nice day. And while Walmart maybe a good place to get a debit card in your area, be careful, unless you want a ****load of hassle. In my mind, worst mistake I ever made. Would have been better off buying one at a conveince store than Walmart. And that is is sad.
Azri on September 14, 2012:
look, I've had regular CC's that charged around 21%. i've also had overdrafts on my checking account before..$35 a day. the $3 fee/addition of $$ is WAY less than the above 2 instances.
trust me, the prepaid walmart card is the better option. that's why i got it. it's either this card or cash for this kid from now on. so far so good.

I bought two cards the other day one for myself and for my husband. i called to get it activated on the phone and online but online it said it was activated . when i was doing it online it asked for the secruity code then got to the end of questions it said put your pin number in but it didn't show a box to put it in. So i tried to used my card it wouldn't work then my husband tried his card at a local store and it worked and then he went to use it again at the same store and it was denied. tried to talk to a rep but he said i didn't need a pin. so now im baffled by it cause this morning i tried to use my card and it asked for the pin number.....

I bought a card from the local walmart. when I tried to activate it I could only get it as a temporary card. I was told they cannot validate my address so they cannot send me a permanent card. I live in the middle of the village less than a mile from walmart so I don't understand why this a problem. When I tryed calling the person I talked to was not good with the english language so I did not get far. I will use up what money I haveon thecard and it will be the last time I buy one from walmart!

Well, my card was frozen while on vacation.(I took this card so I was not caring cash) I called and they said it was because I was making ATM cash withdrawls. They said it was not intended for that. They reauthorized the account and gave me 30 days to use the money before the account is closed perminatly! So, I have $1900 on it, can't make cash withdrawls, and if I do not use it all I loose my money when the account is closed? No answer on that one!

Ah, I should have scrolled to the very bottom of page! I had the very same question as Shawn and had trouble finding the answer online. Thank you kia31! :) I myself have been using a walmart moneycard for a few years and have had no problems (knock on wood). There was even months of non-reloading (inactivity with zero balance) but decided to see if I could use it again maybe 4 months later due to reading someplace that inactive cards with zero balance are closed after 60 days. But, nope, my card was a-ok so I proceeded to have it reloaded. Everything has been fine and I use it for my financial aid direct deposit for college. Thanks again, Kia31!

When trying to use my card is was declined so to be on the safe side I called the number on the reverse side. For verification it asked for my zip code which I put in and it kept replying that I had made an invalid entry then hanging up on me. After this happening several times I tried to contact a customer service representative, which after a 26 minute wait a person answered with such a foreign accent that I could barely understand a word they said. What I could understand is that my account had been closed due to "Suspicious activity." Being troubled by this I asked what suspicious activity had transpired to which they replied "We do not have that information." When I asked who does have that information and could I speak with them I got the same reply, "We do not have that information." I asked to speak with a supervisor to which I was told that they are too busy. This is the worst customer service that I have received on anything in my life. Now I am still very troubled that "Suspicious activity" has occurred on a account in my name, which has all my pertinent information and I cannot get anyone to tell me what it is. Besides that my card is no longer working causing an extreme inconvenience. I cannot believe that Walmart would let such an incompetent organization to put their name on their card. This organization totally stinks and I will never have anything to do with or recommend them to anyone.

Man you people are so dumb! This card is NOT hard to use. Simpley direct deposit your check to waive the 3 $ monthly fee. Or go to Walmart and cash your check then deposit it on the card to waive the fee or you can load 1,000$ to also waive the fee. Don't go to ATM because they rape you!! Simply buy groceries and get CASH BACK at the register. For balance just check online or opt for the txt message of you balance. I have free talk and txt so i dnt get charged for txt messages of my balance

I do not see an important positive about the prepaid debit cards listed here--the reason I got the card.
I was a victime of internet fraud and my bank gave me no help! At the branch the people kept telling me the questionable charges were point of sale, and I had to 'prove' that they were not by 'retiring my card myself for 3 months, in order to get to the fraud department! The fraud department just said that the local branch "should not have told you that!" ( that the charges were point of sale) and did indeed prove fraud. However. They would only reimburse the charge and overdraft fees for the month when this came to their attention--and none for all the fees and charges in the almost a year before they made their determination! They are no longer my bank!
I would NEVER again use a regular credit card or bank credit card ON-LINE! ( the question of how the rogues got my information--and then esp. a newly issued yearly card # that had never been used on-line --was never explained.) You may feel your bank makes it safe--but it does not!
If someone is charging your Walmart Card illicitly, the worst thing that can happen is you will lose what ever prepaid balance has not been spent, and/or you can cancel and buy a new card for a minimum fee!

This is peoples money!! Without money in this country you could at worst, die. I don't understand how a company that deals with other peoples money could not have the best costumer service available and be able to solve problems of money transfers within minutes, especially since they are paying extra money for the service. I will definitely not be using this and I'm very glad I came across this page before spending my hard earned cash on one. Shame on you guys for letting so many people down! It makes me very sad that the law allows you to get away with this.

I got the temporary card and went online to set up my account I couldn't get into the account it says the user name is not valid I wrote down everything so I would not forget. I received my permanent card and went online to activate it and was told this card is already activated but still the same problem I have tried to change the info and still the same problems so basically I have a worthless card that has twenty dollars on it that I can't use. So I went and got a different prepaid a Moneygram account now set it up online with no problems and have used it as far as I am concerned the Wal-Mart card is a piece of junk and a big headache to even try to set up.

I have a card that I accidentally bought thinking it was a gift card. It has been a pain and I will never buy or recommend anyone buy one. It took me two weeks to get it activated and by then I had been charged a monthly fee again. I can't get the card to work anywhere now cause I can't get access to find out how much is remaining on the card. I will be more careful in the future and make sure I never buy this crappy thing again.

I actually called customer service and they answered pretty quick! The service rep told me that my card is GOOD and the reason why I had a "Security Block" is because I HAVE to wait at least 15 minutes after registered for me to use online to pay my personal bills....So, I try the second time and it works!!!! Thank Lord! Everything is good to go! Anyone needs any money?? Just kidding!! Thanks again! Al
kia31 (author) from Los Angles on July 15, 2011:
You need to call Customer Service and asked them to release the security block if possible. If you have never used the card, you should have no problems.

I just bought a MasterCard at Walmart. I paid at the cashier X.Y.Z amount of $$, shortly after that, I went home and activated the (2 cards). Then I log in and saw my balance (not a problem yet!), then I went to pay my T-mobile bill and the website decline my NEW CARD, THEN I went and look on the www.walmartmoneycard.com website and notice that they decline the transaction! Then, I called the number behind the card and the automatic machine says: "Your decline transaction is because YOU have a SECURITY BLOCK"??! Why??? I try to reach customer service but no luck! I do have the receipt from Walmart, I have the activation code on the receipt however....What do I do now???? Dam, I don't want to loose my money that IS to pay my personal bills...Any advice here please!!! Thanks, Al.

They have told me twice that the money would be put back but it never has.

I had been pretty much satisfied with my card until i lost my card and went on line to report it lost and requested a new one.I did this on Monday morning. It clearly stated that the replacement card would arrive in 2 to 3 business days well five days(friday) later i call to let them know that the new card had not arrived I was informed that is takes 7 to 10 days. Wow!!! I have my paycheck direct deposited on my card. Payday is today and I was told that the new card would arrive no later than NEXT Friday. Unbelieveable. For me this means my bills will be paid late. Don't have enough money for gas, groceries, food etc. you get the picture. I was also told that there was no other way for me to access my own money until the new card arrives NEXT friday. I really do feel like something needs to change with this particular situation.
This is truly not good customer service. Overnight mail service is not even available even if the customer is willing to pay for it themselves.

I was under the impression it was like using a prepaid gift/debit card. I really did think it was that simple. Apparently, I was wronge. I added $20.00 yesterday and my card wouldn't work. I finally got through to check on my card and learned it has an $80.00 overdraft!! How can a gift card allow me to spend more money than what I put on the card? When I asked this at Walmart she looked as shocked as I felt. The customer service manager(CSM) didn't know it would do that either.
I had other problem like it not allowing me access to my account even though I answered the secret question right. With what I thought I knew, I didn't think it mattered. They never sent me a statement, which I thought was part of the deal.
I'm sure it probably mentioned in all their rules and regulations that this card is alot more complicated than a simple gift card. If I had known this wasn't a simple gift card, up front, I wouldn't have never bought it. I won't use it again. It just became another bill I can't pay. And has probably robbed me of more meoney than I know or can find out about.
This is a seriouse buyer beware product. And dffinitly look this gift horse in the mouth. It does bite.

So, I have a question/complaint...When I got my card the dude typed my name in wrong. I noticed when I got my card and called to fix it, not a big deal right? I guess the guy didn't know what he was doing and reported my card lost/stolen, so I called again to see WTF and they said they are mailing a new card. My question is will this affect the direct deposit of my tax return? does it mess with my account number? Or do I just trust walmart to handle it and transfer it to the new card?
Melissa on February 19, 2011:
I just got a money card from Walmart and i just wanted it to purchase one thing online but for nothing further. So will i be charged the $3 fee regardless if i ever use it again? And if so how can i cancel it? And will i be charged to cancel?
kia31 (author) from Los Angles on February 18, 2011:
Since you are doing this online you will not get a temporary card you will get an actual Visa card with your name on it but you will still need to get online or call the 1-800 number to activate it. To add money to your card you can go to any Walmart Cashier and add the money paying a $3 load fee or you can buy MoneyPak form most drugstores or gas stations as well a WalMart and add the money their. So you will get your card not a temporary one, then activate it and then you will need to add money on it to use it. You can also setup direct deposit but will have to wait till your employer or money provider sets it up for you.

Thank you for this informative post and comments, especially kia31's posts.
I have a few questions hopefully someone can answer for me.
- I'm thinking of getting the Walmart money card mainly for online purchases. When I go to the Walmartmoneycard Website and use the getacardnow option - I have to put in my name/address and SSN. Is this the temporary card or the real card avoiding the $3 fee from stores? Is this card preactivated since it already has my information or do I need to activate it again?
- The monthly fee or $3, what happens when I don't have any money left in it. Do they take $3 out next time I load money or do they block my card or something?
- Does this card have my name printed on it?
- Is this card generally good for online purchases? Are there any merchants that don't accept this card?
And most importantly, do I need to show ID to load this card at Walmart stores? Can I give this card to my brother and have him load it for me even though it doesn't have his name? The same with checks too, The check has to be addressed to the same name as on the card, right?
I know long questions! but any help would be appreciated!

here's something...if you have a walmart moneycard...if you ever lose it and report it to them...that is if you get a live person on the line...BIG IF...oh they will put a security block on your card...that's ok...it's when you find your card wasn't stolen...just misplaced, the real fun begins when you need to get the block removed! I have been calling and calling the customer service number on the back of the card and can not get a live person to save my life!...just don't misplace your card whatever you do!

Angel, I am not sure if you can buy one in China but you can go online at moneypak.com and see what your options are. If you have family in the US you can get them to purchase one for you and give you to codes to load the money on your card.
