Find the very best article submission directories with "do follow" links and high PageRank!
Article marketing is still a useful SEO method to build backlinks and increase traffic to your website, as well as to improve your website's PageRank gradually. I've been involved with article marketing for more than a decade so I know what works today and what doesn't. After Google's famous Panda (and Penguin) updates, most—if not all—article directories were penalized for publishing questionable spam content and tons of duplicate content. Google demoted nearly all popular article directories in both Page Rank and URL rankings. It's nearly impossible today to submit a unique article to an article directory and find it within the top 100 results of Google for a competitive keyword or phrase.
In this special Hub, I have chosen the "best of the best" article submission directories that work TODAY. I actively use these article directories myself. I've made sure each article directory has: 1) an excellent reputation with BOTH users AND search engines; 2) has an excellent, solid PageRank; 3) offers "do follow" links in the resource box; 4) offers contextual links and/or direct links in the resource box; 5) generates good traffic; and 6) does NOT mass submit your full article to other directories via an API or RSS feeds.
** I have eliminated article directories that do not offer "do follow" links as well as directories known for spamming search engines.
The two criteria that I focus on for myself are 1) good PageRank and 2) do follow links. Without one or the other, you cannot build good URL rankings in search engines or gradually improve your website's PageRank with article marketing.

** You can sort my table by clicking on the column header. You can sort by Name, PageRank, Alexa Traffic, Sites Linking In, and by Rating.
The column called "Alexa Traffic Rank" provides a "ranking calculation" based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data. The LOWER the website's Alexa Traffic Rank, the HIGHER the website's traffic.
The column called "Sites Linking In" provides an estimate of how many websites link directly to that particular article directory. In theory, the more "sites linking in," the more popular the article directory is with users.
The column called "My Rating" provides my own rating for each article directory based on traffic, reputation, page rank, and my own personal results. A five star rating is the best.
About Do Follow Links
In case you are unfamiliar with the term, "Do Follow Links," it simply means the site linking back to you gives you a backlink that adds to your website's ranking in search engine results and adds to the overall PageRank of your site. Webmasters can decide to insert either a "no follow" or "do follow" HTML tag for any hyperlink. "No Follow" equals no juice; "Do Follow" equals juice.
About My Top Article Directories List
I might assume that you were looking for me to list 100-500 article directories, instead of a measly 20+ sites? I also might assume that you were thinking these sites would—at the very least—have a PageRank of 5-7? Welcome to reality. Since Google's updates to eliminate duplicate content and penalize sites that publish duplicate content, article directories have taken the biggest blow. Sure, you can find 500-1000 article directories to submit your articles to, but these directories have such a low PageRank (2 to 0), that they are NOT worth your time. These days a "reputable" article directory has at least a PageRank of 4-5. I don't bother with the other ones.
New Article Marketing Strategies
I have changed my article marketing strategies over the months to compensate for these Internet-wide changes and developments. I no longer submit the same article to more than one article directory; instead, I submit original, non-duplicate content to each "Google favorite" article directory, each with a unique resource box. Yes, this takes a lot of time, but the results prove that it is worth it.
Mass Submissions Are NO Longer Effective
Mass (spammy) article distribution is no longer effective. You can use an online article submission service or hire a service provider from Fivver.com for $5 to mass submit your article to thousands of (PageRank 2 to PageRank 0) article directories in no time. Indeed, this will build tons of backlinks and improve your website's ranking—but this is only momentarily until Google figures out that your complete article appears on hundreds—if not thousands—of spammy article directories. Google is weeding out duplicate AND spun content from its search engine results and is giving little to no value to backlinks in duplicate (or spun) content.
Evolve Your Article Marketing Techniques
Right now you must evolve your article marketing strategies and ask yourself how you can add real value to your content. The obvious answer is to submit unique, original content. Software spun articles do NOT count; in fact, that's worse than submitting duplicate content.
I would like to provide you with my own insights into a few of these article directories that have worked for me.
Article Directory # 1: EzineArticles.com
EzineArticles.com has always been--and still is--my favorite article submission site. In fact, it is the # 1 site for article submissions among SEO marketers for many reasons: 1) it has one of the best PageRanks for an article directory; 2) it's been in existence for more than a decade; 3) it generates lots of readers to your articles; and 4) they have a staff who reviews every article before approving it. Quality control is important at EzineArticles. An article that you sloppily write or duplicate will NOT get approved. Only original, unique and correctly worded articles get approved.
EzineArticles.com has been making many positive changes to help writers build a social media-driven profile and encourage readers to share and "like" their articles across other media platforms like Facebook and Google+.
PageRank is a solid 6
Allows 2 "do follow" links in your Resource Box
** To submit your articles at EzineArticles.com, go to http://ezinearticles.com/
Article Directory # 2: GoArticles.com
I have been using GoArticles.com for as long as I have been using EzineArticles.com--about 8 years or so. GoArticles.com is another popular article directory. When you submit an article, it usually gets approved within a few hours. As far as I can tell, GoArticles.com does not have a "human review" process. It looks as if the review process is automatic. GoArticles claims that it receives 10,000 to 12,000 article submissions per week. WOW! That's huge!
Allows 2 Do Follow Links

Article Directory # 3: Zimbio.com
Zimbio.com (PageRank 6) is NOT an article directory site in the sense that it allows users to reprint your content for free. It lets article writers and bloggers post articles and stories related to entertainment, lifestyle, business, and culture. Each post or article can contain contextual dofollow links. Although the site doesn't limit the number of links in a single article, I always suggest you include no more than two outbound links. Zimbio also lets you add your blog or website URL so that each post includes a link back to your website. Submit only original, high-quality content.
Article Directory # 4: iSnare.com
iSnare.com (est. in 2004) is one of my preferred article directory sites that I've been using for many years (since 2005). Once iSnare.com approves your article you will find it listed in Google.com's search results nearly immediately and ranked higher than if approved by most other article directories. Because iSnare.com always ranks my articles higher in search engines, I do opt into the website's "fast approval" process by purchasing "credits" which costs less than $1.00 per article approval. Without the "fast approval" process iSnare takes between 3-5 days to approve an article.
iSnare.com has updated its website over the last couple of months to improve the website's layout and appearance. It also now offers a Premium membership at $30/month that guarantees fast approval for articles. I suppose one would purchase the membership if submitting hundreds of article a month; if not, iSnare's services remain free.
Allows 2 Do Follow Links

Article Directory # 5: ArticleRich.com
ArticleRich.com has built up a loyal following of readers and article submitters over the years to make it a popular article directory. When you submit an article, you will have to wait a few days to a whole week for approval. Not sure if each article is "human reviewed" or if articles are automatically processed in batches per day. You can add two hyperlinks in the article body and up to three of 3 hyperlinks in your resource box.
Allows 3 Do Follow Links

Article Directory # 6: Triond.com
Triond.com has a unique publishing concept: when you submit an article, it will publish it on one of its many private network blogs and/or websites. This is a fantastic way to build a diverse range of backlinks to your website because an article with a different topic will appear on a different website. Many of Triond.com's network of websites have PageRanks between 4 and 5 (from what I researched). Triond.com also offers you ways to earn revenue with your content, such as via AdSense and contextual advertising. Each of Triond.com's websites are closely managed by staff members to eliminate spam and duplicate content.
Allows "Do Follow" links in article

Article Directory # 7: InfoBarrel.com
InfoBarrel.com is not necessary an "article directory" because you cannot post duplicate content or spun content (nor should you). All articles must be original. InfoBarrel allows two external "do follow" links in the body copy of your article, and two external links in your resource box. Once you have had ten articles approved and published by the editors, you will become eligible to submit pre-approved articles. InfoBarrel also lets you insert your own AdSense code and start earning money from Adsense clicks on all of your articles. InfoBarrel is similar to Squidoo and HubPages, but offers less features. This is a great website to submit engaging articles with photos in return for generating traffic to your website and improving your website's PageRank.
PageRank is 5
Allows Do Follow links

Article Directory # 8: HubPages.com
I hesitate to slap the phrase "article submission directory" to HubPages because it is so much more. Many so called "article directory" sites are static and stagnate--a user posts an article for SEO purposes and then leaves. Because a typical article directory is stuffed with useful and useless articles written correctly or poorly, readers usually do not revisit the site on their own unless led to a specific article by a search engine.
Although I list HubPages as an "article directory," it is not in comparison to the common article directory site. HubPages is an active, energetic, thriving community of writers and readers. Most users who sign up with HubPages to submit articles become regular contributors to build a loyal following of readers. HubPages actively promotes its contributors and their content (it must be good) and offers plenty of social media and networking tools to converse with fans, share information, and distribute articles directly to their fan base.
HubPages only allows "do follow" links in your articles when you reach a specific Profile Level. When you consistently publish high-quality Hubs (like this one), you will see your Profile Level increase. HubPages has this measure in place to prevent spammers from posting one-time articles with links or lots of useless content with links.
PageRank is 6 (should be 8 in my opinion)
Allows Do Follow links after a specific Profile Level

Article Directory # 9: Squidoo.com
As of May 2013, Squidoo has changed dofollow links to nofollow links. However, you can still add dofollow links using Squidoo's Link List module. The last few months Squidoo has been using new filters to spot and remove "thin" content or just plain lousy writing. This extra step—to change dofollow links to nofollow links—in the text areas of Lenses is a more intrusive way for the company to eradicate "spammy" Lenses stuffed with backlinks or affiliate links. No doubt Google's policy on what constitutes as "high quality" and "poor quality" content has caused Squidoo to make these changes.
If you have never used Squidoo, think of the site similar to HubPages in both features and functions, I do not classify Squidoo as just another article directory site, as I do not with Hubpages. The real power of Squidoo is social networking: building a loyal following of readers. Squidoo is a lot more flexible than HubPages in what you can and cannot submit. Because Squidoo has a powerful PageRank 7, it is an excellent site to write quality articles that will attract readers.
Allows Do Follow links in any Link List module only.

MyBlogGuest and BloggerLinkUp
Two wonderful (free) services that allow you to submit "guest posts" (articles) to specific websites are MyBlogGuest.com and BloggerLinkUp.com. They both serve the same purpose: to help you find reputable, relevant niche websites with decent to high pageranks that will publish your articles for free in exchange for backlinks and traffic.
You can register for free at both sites. Each has a similar submission process. For example: if you want to publicize and generate backlinks to your website about "iPad App Reviews," then you'd write an article similar to the focus of your website and offer it as a "guest post." Bloggers and webmasters who use these sites' services to find content will see a preview of your article; if they are interested in publishing it, they will send a request to you to do so. This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to have your content with backlinks appear on websites with pageranks from 2 to 7, along with sizeable traffic and a loyal following of readers.
Popular Article Directories I Don't Use
Here is a list of "popular" article directories that SEO individuals still recommend but I don't. I provide my reason for each one so you know why.
1) I don't use 1888Articles.com because it has NOFOLLOW links.
2) I no longer recommend Gather.com because the site has banned new users from registering since January 2013.
3) I don't use Article-Niche.com (PageRank 4) because it asks for a one-time membership fee of $9.95.
4) I don't use ArticleCity.com (PageRank 5) because it's been inactive for over a year.
5) I don't use ArticlesBase.com (PageRank 5) because it has NOFOLLOW links.
6) I no longer use ArticleTrader.com (PageRank 4). Seems to be inactive.
How I Write Original Content Quickly
I set aside a certain amount of time each week to devote myself to writing articles for article submissions. Because my purpose for most of these article directories is to build backlinks, I don't invest more than 20 minutes to write a single article. I write from my own experience and knowledge so I don't waste time in the research process. I keep each article in the range of 500-550 words in length, nothing over. The exception is with social community sites like Squidoo and HubPages where I invest more time and passion into what I write.
