Sometimes people get in the habit of spending money on items they can get much cheaper or even free. Whether you have lots of money or you are on a tight budget, you don't need to waste money.

Below is a list of items that you don't need to purchase.

Bottled Water

If you are trying to save money, one of the first things you can do is to stop buying bottled water. Unless you purchase a case when it is on sale at the supermarket, you are spending at least a dollar or more for a bottle of water. Carry your own water from home when you go out.

Drinking bottled water has become a trend more than a need. Some people are convinced that bottled taste better, but it has been reported more than once that what you are buying in the bottle is the same water you can get from your own faucet. Drinking filtered tap water is so much cheaper.

Books, Newspapers, Magazines, and Tapes

There is no need to buy brand new books that cost an arm and a leg. With a library card, you can borrow books, newspapers, magazines, and tapes. You rent them for a set time and you can renew them when the original time is up if you need to do so.

You can read some books online for free as well as the latest editions of newspapers and magazine. More than 57,000 e-books can be downloaded for free from Project Gutenberg. Sign up for BookBub and receive a list of free books to read online every single day. If you prefer audiobooks, sign up at LibriVox for a wide selection of free ones.

If you want to purchase your own books, never pay full price for them. You can buy used books from Amazon.com and from eBay. Free books are available at Five Easy Ways to Get Free Books.

Instead of purchasing a movie or even going to the movies, just wait a few weeks and the movie will be on television either on your On Demand service or on Netflix or Amazon Prime or on the dozen of other streaming services.

Buy Store Brands Instead of Name Brands

Some name brand items and store brands are the same. They are identical except for the packaging. If you want to spend extra money, continue buying name brand items. If you don't believe this is true, take an expensive brand name bottle of a pain reliever and compare the ingredients to what's in a bottle of inexpensive store brand pain reliever. You will find the identical ingredients. Even pharmacists will tell you that.

This also happens with cleaning supplies and baking items. Generic brands will save you money. After all, you don't use the fancy packages anyway.

Prepare Your Own Taxes

You don't need to pay someone to prepare your taxes for you. There are software packages that you can use. The first time you use the software, it may be a bit challenging, but after you set up your account, it will be easier in subsequent years.

If you are a senior citizen, some places like Goodwill will prepare your taxes for you free or at a reduced rate.

Online Shipping Fees

If you plan in advance, you can save money by not choosing rush shipping. If you can wait a few days longer for an item, do not pay a rush fee. Let your package come the slower way to save you money.

Check Newspaper for Free Items

Before you go shopping for new items, check your community newspaper or neighborhood newsletter. Sometimes people are giving about items just to get rid of them.

Craigslist and Freecycle have a section with a wide range of free or inexpensive items. Take the time to check out their selections.

Review Your Insurance Needs

Review all your insurance needs. This includes your car insurance, house insurance, and life insurance.

You might have more car insurance than you need. You can also get premium deductions if you are a senior citizen, belong to a credit union, have taken a driver's education course, etc. Your premium might be lower if you no longer drive as much as you used to when you set up the policy. If you have retired and no longer have to drive to work, your car insurance might be reduced.

It is good if you have a life insurance policy on yourself, but most financial planners will tell you that you do not need life insurance on your young children because if something happens to them, there will be no lost income.

Stop Paying Bank Fees

Some banks charge you a fee if you do not keep a certain amount of money in it. They also charge you an ATM fee and many other fees. Joining a credit union or putting your money in a smaller bank will help you avoid bank fees.

Don't Pay for Credit Reports

You do not need to pay for a credit report. You can get it free once a year. There is no charge for one annual report from each of the three major credit reporting companies. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com for details.

Other Items

There are other ways to save you money by not paying for what you don't need, but the above ones are enough to get you started.
