Increase Website Traffic by Posting Links on Reddit -- Part I

increase-website-traffic-part-i-by-posting-links-on-reddit

© 2012 by Aurelio Locsin.

If you haven’t read the introduction for this hub yet, check out How My Hub Went from Zero to 3,000 Page Views in Just Under Eight Hours. There are no guarantees as to how much your traffic will increase, but posting a link on Reddit can multiply your visitors by up to four digits. This free site bills itself as the “front page of the Internet.” It allows members in to post links to online articles, pictures, videos and other multimedia. (You don’t need a membership to view the links.)

Because Reddit values complete participation, it contains a vigorous spam checker. You need to follow a few procedures so you’re accepted as a valued site member rather than a spammer who can be banned. Be sure and read the other two parts of this article, shown on the right, before actually posting.

1. Create an account.

Go to the Register page and create a username, password and password verification. You can optionally enter your email address. (This is recommended if you want to receive certain notifications.) You then enter the capcha code and click the Create Account button. You are now a member of Reddit.

2. Read the FAQ and Reddiquette.

As with any site, Reddit has specific rules and customs, which you need to follow if you want to experience the best results. Check them out in FAQ and Reddiquette at the bottom of the site page.

3. Search for subreddits.

Never post a link at the main Reddit page or your message will get lost among thousands of other postings . Instead, you need to find the appropriate forum, known as a “subreddit.”

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the site page and choose subreddits to display the Search Subreddits page. Do not use the Search field on the home page because that will display messages and comments as well.
  2. Enter the topic you want to search for and press your Enter key. A list of related subreddits appears.
  3. Scroll through the listings to locate an appropriate subreddit. You may need to click Next at the bottom of the page to see all the information.
  4. Click the name of the subreddit you want to visit. Its home page appears.
  5. Confirm that this is a subreddit you can use by looking at the number of readers, which are listed on the upper right side, under the Search box. A thousand readers or more is an acceptable number, although you may prefer lower numbers for obscure topics.
  6. View the list of links on the left side to see if your contribution is appropriate for this subreddit.

4. Integrate yourself into the subreddit community.

One of the way Reddit judges if you are a spammer is by examining the number of links you post from one site, such as your blog. yours is not a known site such as CNN or YouTube, and it has too many links from you, it marks you as a spammer. To avoid this designation, you need to post links from a variety of sites. The exact ratio of other sites needed for every link to your site is unknown. But the more other sites you link to, the better because you become a more useful member of the community.

Many of the subreddits will examine your posting history on the entire Reddit site to determine if you are a spammer. To avoid this, you can post different links not just on your subreddit of interest, but others that are unrelated to your topic.

For the continuation of this article, with information on how to post links, see Part II of Increase Website Traffic by Posting Links on Reddit.

Great advices, I am going to use instagram also!

Hi Alcosin,

I am binge reading your articles right now. You have a mastered the art of getting traffic and I am learning a lot from you. Thanks for sharing your invaluable insights.

Jacobb9205 on April 21, 2015:

Thank you for this, I really appreciate it. I've been participating on Reddit all day. I hope my views go up :)

greattutorial on March 19, 2013:

thanks

Willette from Michigan on March 05, 2013:

Thanks for this hub. This is very helpful. Reading the next hub so I can check out this reddit. Thanks again. very useful.

David Steffy from Southern Ohio on February 11, 2013:

Thanks alocsin. I will continue to work at this and see if I ever get a nice peek in views. So far I'm not doing so well.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 11, 2013:

Sorry I didn't answer this sooner, Pool of Thoughts. I'm still on vacation and don't get to a computer often. But you click the "Submit a Post" link under your Reddit forum of choice. You then enter a title and then the link in the appropriate boxes. That's all you do -- you don't put your links in your comments.

David Steffy from Southern Ohio on January 28, 2013:

Just curious, do you have to write something and then include your link below your comments, like in footprinting, or is there something I'm missing. The way your article read I was expecting a link box where you could just post a link or something. I don't see anything like that. Do you become a subscriber and then just share your link? I'm slow, sorry. Any help would be great.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on November 02, 2012:

Congratulations, LauraVerderber. It looks like Reddit is now accepting HubPages authors again, based on your experience.

Power Ball Pythons from Mobile, AL on November 01, 2012:

Just wanted to give you an update. I tried out your suggestion of Reddit. I have been focusing on being a good member and not a spammer. I found out that I've been enjoying sharing good links and reading the random stuff found on there. I have gotten some traffic from Reddit towards my HubPages articles and a few to my Youtube videos. Not a lot of traffic, but I'm hoping it will go up as I continue to increase my presence there. Thanks for the tip!

Kerry43 on September 27, 2012:

I have a question, as I came back to re-read these articles after joining Reddit (thouht I already had an account...)....When I post a link by someone else, should I go for the subreddit to do that too?

Thanks, it's very easy to get lost in there!

Kerry:)

Sheila Brown from Southern Oklahoma on August 17, 2012:

Reddit sounds a lot like Digg and StumbleUpon which I have been using for some time now with little traffic improvement. I am think that Reddit is probably more popular and will increase my views. I am going to read your other hubs on this subject and give Reddit a try. Voted this up and useful. Have a great day! :)

Sarah Campbell from Liverpool, UK on August 13, 2012:

Very helpful hub, I've been curious about reddit for some time! Will be giving it a try!

iefox5 on July 25, 2012:

Reddit is really a good site I used before. Social medias like facebook and twitter are other sites we may use to drive more traffic.

Sondra Rochelle from USA on July 25, 2012:

I took a look at Reddit after reading your first article and it appeared to me that posting my own links was taboo. Also, I have all I can do these days to interact on HP, so guess I'll have to forego the big numbers. Maybe if I was younger or had more time? Interesting article, though, and I'm sure it will help many. I wish I had your talent for figuring out statistics, etc. There's still much I don't get regarding that. Nice to see you again.

Vespa Woolf from Peru, South America on July 25, 2012:

I think you just saved me a lot of time! Now I plan to follow your helpful step-by-step instructions and hope to increase my traffic through Reddit. Thanks so much! Voted up and shared.

ShaamCA from India on July 22, 2012:

Yup Reddit is also an powerful social media network but it need immense hard work and patience to be successful in it , this hub provided a good explanation about its uses.good one :)

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on July 09, 2012:

I wish I knew, Saif.

Saif on July 08, 2012:

Hi: Alocsin

how to get your link on reddit front page . help me

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on June 08, 2012:

Good luck Greg. But be sure to read all the parts of my Reddit post so you avoid a ban.

Greg Sereda from Sandomierz, Poland on June 06, 2012:

I just signed up with Reddit. Your hub got me excited about it!

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on June 01, 2012:

Glad to hear that, Tammy. Hope you continue to find Reddit useful.

alipuckett on May 31, 2012:

I've had very results with reddit. It's definitely worth investing the time!

Tammy from North Carolina on May 30, 2012:

Just stopping by to let you know these tips worked for me. Thanks so much for sharing them!

RTalloni on May 12, 2012:

So many pros and cons to these sights. Thanks for posting your experience and tips on Reddit. Will definitely be reading your Part 2 and Lessons. Thanks, too, for helpful replies to comments. One sign of a good hub is that it generates informative comments!

ShaamCA from India on May 10, 2012:

I am using reddit but not getting much traffic from it, I think I was lacking in some where, thanks for the tips will try out the above methods...

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on May 06, 2012:

Congrats, tmbridgeland. Even better that the posting came from somebody else who liked your hub.

tmbridgeland from Small Town, Illinois on May 03, 2012:

Some more evidence, today a Hub of mine went from 10 hits to 68 hits. I didn't do anything, but someone must have put a link to readit, because all of those extra hits came from there. Be interesting to see how the next few days look. Most of those hits came in about an hour.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on May 01, 2012:

Thanks BonnyC. I'm glad this was helpful.

BonnyC from Georgia on May 01, 2012:

Alocsin, Thanks so much for such a great series of hubs! I'm finally diving into Hubpages, and I was feeling lost when it came to attracting traffic. This will help immensely! I read each hub twice and got a little distracted with some of your other hubs. You're gonna teach me a lot, I can already tell.

Nomascus concolor from A Country called Earth on April 22, 2012:

Thanks for this hub. I did not know about reddit before this hub.

CircleSquaring from Dallas, Texas on April 18, 2012:

Very useful hub. I'm just beginning my exploration of this new world of online writing, so this information will be most helpful. I'll certainly read the rest you have on reddit.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on March 25, 2012:

Try reducing your search term, emilybee. I think jaw surgery is too narrow a focus. But surgery or medicine might get you some hits.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on March 25, 2012:

Don't forget, The Engineer, HubPages gives earnings based on impressions, so Reddit views equals more money on HubPages.

emilybee on March 25, 2012:

Awesome hub, I'm a little confused. I just registered, you say to go to the bottom and click on subreddits, which I did. I typed in 'jaw surgery diet', relevant to my latest hub. All that came up was some different peoples articles they have written-not a jaw surgery category. Am I doing something wrong? Great hub!! I'll read thru it again, maybe I'm missing something.

ronakbhatia from Mumbai, India on March 25, 2012:

Reddit and Digg are two of the most active social bookmark sites. A quality share will always get appreciation and traffic.

Gloria from France on March 24, 2012:

Thanks for this information alocsin, I was wondering how to increase traffic. I will definately check this out voted up and bookmarked if I can find the bookmark it's been moved?

Max Zvyagintsev from New Zealand on March 24, 2012:

ah, I've never heard of Reddit until now - thanks so much!

I'll definitely try this out.

Max

Ask Ashley from California on March 24, 2012:

Great tips and advice. voted up.

babithababa on March 24, 2012:

Hai, very informative . I voted up . And bookmarked for reading again . Thamks a lot.

mikeydcarroll67 on March 24, 2012:

I particularly use Digg. I found that I've had pretty good luck with them and can digg other stories as well while I am there. But I guess that is just me though.

AboutInvesting from United States on March 23, 2012:

Great tips! That's good info for someone like me who is just getting started. Voted up!

poowool5 from here in my house on March 19, 2012:

Oh OK, thanks so much for the reply! This makes sense. I will be more selective with where and what to post in future. Thanks!

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on March 19, 2012:

You really have to find the right hub. There are subreddits that seem to be primarily pictures. In that case, I wouldn't bother posting any text there, because it would be unpopular.

poowool5 from here in my house on March 19, 2012:

Hey alocsin, lots of good advice, so gave it a try, but no comments/traffic on my one fat cat hub posting :( Thought I'd just post one hub so I wouldn't get banned. What did i do wrong? Doesn't anyone like fat cats any more?! Also, so many of the subreddits just seemed to be pictures (imgur), no text...confused. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Anjili from planet earth, a humanoid on March 11, 2012:

Quite elaborate. Looking forward to reading through part 2. Thanks for the share.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on March 06, 2012:

Just be careful, dilipchandra12, and be sure to read all three Reddit hubs. You don't want to get banned.

Dilip Chandra from India on March 06, 2012:

Honestly i utterly failed in getting any traffic from Reddit. Good hub and well written, will follow what you've written and give one more try.

Ramabhadran from Thiruvananthapuram on March 04, 2012:

Excellent hub. I appreciate you for this Valuable tips. I am in a hurry to move the second part.Thank you.

Java Programs from India on March 03, 2012:

Reddit is surely one of the best social bookmarking site .... Even digg and stumbleupon are great alternatives ....Thanks for the info .... Keep the good work up .....

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on March 03, 2012:

Very true, valuestreaming. On one of my submissions, the redditers spent a lot of time analyzing the stats.

Valuestreammktg on March 02, 2012:

Reddit can be a very good source of traffic, but their user base is very knowledgeable and will not be fooled. Much smarter than many other social media sites.

CCamoroso from California on March 01, 2012:

I don't use Reddit much, but you got me thinking that I need to apply this to my Stumbleupon account. Thank you for sharing this.

raesh on March 01, 2012:

great article thanks

Dawn A. Harden from CT-USA on February 29, 2012:

I am going to try this out. Thanks for the tip.

Sushmita from Kolkata, India on February 29, 2012:

Thanks once more, Alocsin. First I checked into Reddit, and tread lightly, so I was allowed to submit. Now with expert advice from here, I checked it out and my other questions are also answered. I will practice some more before I read the next Hub. Voted up -useful and interesting and shared.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 22, 2012:

Be sure and check out Part II, and the article on Avoiding a Ban, WD Curry. Thanks for stopping by.

Mala Srivastava from India on February 21, 2012:

Thanks for your reply alocsin. I will check it out.

WD Curry 111 from Space Coast on February 21, 2012:

Hey, brother, I will try this out. You know I am remedial about this stuff. Thanks for your willingness to help out a lame-o.

Meanwhile, I have a ton of artwork to crank out. So at least I won't starve while I am learning.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 21, 2012:

I'm not sure why it's not showing for you Mala. I can see them here and about 20 health subreddits. Perhaps they are blocked for your country. I know that certain websites block content for certain countries. You might try contacting your service provider and ask why you can't see any information on that subreddit.

Mala Srivastava from India on February 20, 2012:

The link http://www.reddit.com/r/health is not showing any information. Also, I did not find any subreddit on health topics. Does this mean that I cannot submit my health related links in reddit. I think my topics are not suitable for science subreddits. Are there any other categories. I have also posted my question on the forum.

Madeleine Salin from Finland on February 16, 2012:

Thanks for writing this informative hub. I will probably have to read part II to learn even more about reddit.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 15, 2012:

It depends on the article. But you can try http://www.reddit.com/r/health, but see first if those are related to your articles.

Are you clicking on the "subreddits" link at the bottom of the site. It should produce this page: http://www.reddit.com/reddits/

The search box is near the top on the left side, right under the "reddit" title and log.

Mala Srivastava from India on February 15, 2012:

I am clicking on subreditts but it is not displaying search subreddits page. Also as I have written articles related to health, can you please suggest me where to post my links.

mfriedstore from 176 Flushing Avenue Brooklyn , New York on February 14, 2012:

reddit is a good social media site wherein you can gain more traffic for your site. Thank you so much and I will find time to try your recommendations.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 13, 2012:

Thank you Mala. I think you'll find they all have necessary information.

Mala Srivastava from India on February 13, 2012:

Very informative hub. I will definitely read rest of your hubs. Keep writing.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 13, 2012:

Before you do, Magdelen, be sure to read all parts of this info, especially the one on Avoiding a Ban. Good luck!

Magdelene from Okotoks on February 13, 2012:

Great and helpful Hub Alocsin, this is something I am definitely going to try out. I think I might already be a member of Reddit but have never really bothered to look into it more deeply. Now, thanks to you I will give it a shot and see how it goes.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 13, 2012:

It's good you're taking it slow, Peggy. Be sure and read about the Ban article as well.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on February 12, 2012:

I am learning from you about reddit and appreciate the advice. Still have part 2 to go before I venture into this. Thanks! Up and useful votes.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Just reddit.com. But be careful about posting there -- you're not going to get any traffic from it because it will be buried under new posts. Try to find a specific subreddit instead.

Marvin Parke from Jamaica on February 12, 2012:

What is the subreddit name used to submit to the the general front page, all I see is specific subreddits?

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Congrats, I'm happy that it's worked out. Read all the parts of my reddit article, especially the one about Avoiding the Ban. Just go slowly and participate in the Reddit community with links to non-HubPages sites, and comments on other links. The effort is well worth the reward.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Thanks. But be sure to read all parts of my Reddit info, including the one on Avoiding a Ban. Let me know how it goes.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Yes, you have to be very careful kelleyward. Have you read my hub on Avoiding a Ban from Reddit? I suffered from one as well but was able to recover, once I discovered their guidelines. Sorry to hear this happened to you.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Glad to hear it, Vinaya. I think you've already read all the hubs, especially the one on avoiding the Reddit ban. Let me know how it goes.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Be sure and read all my Reddit hubs, especially the one on avoiding a ban. Thanks for stopping by.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

The site is pickier than most, but negotiable. The rewards are great though.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 12, 2012:

Absolutely, Casey. Though I must say, I'm getting far better results from Reddit than I am from either Digg or Stumbleupon.

Alexander Gibb from UK on February 12, 2012:

I really appreciate you sharing this information. I subscribed to Reddit last night submitting two Hubs and 24 hours later I have received over 450 hits! I hope it continues.

Have you got any more suggestions?

Rachel Vega from Massachusetts on February 12, 2012:

Wowie! I'm trying this right away. Thanks, alocsin!

kelleyward on February 12, 2012:

Thanks for the info. I got huge traffic at first with my blog by using Reddit. I didn't realize it but after posting my blog again a couple times they noted it as spam. I haven't really been able to recover. Reddit is very strict about submitting your own stuff. Just FYI. Thanks

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on February 12, 2012:

I just registered. Thanks to you!

Sandi from Greenfield, Wisconsin on February 12, 2012:

I have not had much luck with reddit but will give it another try. Thanks, alocsin for yet another very helpful hub:)

Cynthia Calhoun from Western NC on February 12, 2012:

This is a great hub! I'm not convinced Reddit likes me at all, yet, but if it helps someone else, I'm SHARING!

Tammy from North Carolina on February 12, 2012:

This is an excellent guide like many of your hubs. Congratulations on having the #1 hub on hubpages!

Matt Edmondson from Tucson, AZ on February 12, 2012:

Good guide for a reddit newb.

Ann Leung from San Jose, California on February 12, 2012:

Thanks for a very informative hub! I just learned something new from you. I will give it a try. Voted up and very useful.

Casey Strouse from Phoenix, Arizona on February 11, 2012:

The rules for avoiding a ban on Reddit also apply to other sites with similar models such as Digg and Stumbleupon.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 11, 2012:

You're welcome. Be sure to read all the parts about Reddit though, especially my hub about Avoiding a Ban.

Alexander Gibb from UK on February 11, 2012:

This is a very useful Hub, I will give Reddit a try. Thank you.

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on February 11, 2012:

Let me know how it goes. Submitting it just to the main page means it won't ever get noticed.

freelanceauthor on February 10, 2012:

Thanks for the tips. I have used Reddit in the past, but the no changes were observed regarding traffic to my hubs. I was submitting the links at the main page. Will try your subreddit technique and post the results here. Voted up-useful

PWalker281 on February 02, 2012:

This is good info to know. I decided to experiment after reading your "0 to 3,000 page views" hub and, after joining, posted a link on Reddit to one of my crochet hubs in the "crochet" subredit. My page views jumped from 23 to 104 in a few hours. I also commented on several crochet articles, I guess you would call them (still not that familiar with the site) to start participating in the crochet community there.

But it's also good to know how not to be perceived as a spammer, so I will be following the advice you give here about the best way to use Reddit. Thanks for sharing and congrats on your success. Rated up and (very) useful.

Samad Aslam Khan on January 26, 2012:

Some really good and new tips for me. These will definitely bring some more traffic for me and hence some more business as well :)

Aurelio Locsin (author) from Orange County, CA on January 26, 2012:

I'm glad you found this useful. But be sure to read all parts of my Reddit hubs, because the other articles have warnings as well.

hecate-horus from Rowland Woods on January 26, 2012:

I saw this article last night, signed up for Reddit and posted one of my articles. This morning, a HUGE traffic increase. WOW. Thanks!!!!

xshaun on January 25, 2012:

Just another reason why reddit is awesome.

anonymous on January 25, 2012:

I liked this article a lot. Good info. I signed up and used subreddits as you suggested. Hope to see some good traffic.

Thanks.
