Heating Problems

Suzzycue lives in an apartment building that was built to code in the 1960s. She loves the view of the river from her balcony but the heating in the wintertime, is from heating coils situated in the ceiling of every room of her apartment. Why is this a problem? Everyone knows that hot air rises so when Suzzycue has her heat on, it stays at the ceiling, or goes up and heats half of the apartment upstairs. What were they thinking? This is also very expensive to use. If Suzzycue has all the breakers on for this heat system to run it can cost upwards of $160.00 to $300.00 a month in January to keep her barely warm. This ceiling heat is no good. If you have similar heating problems ,read on. What is the answer?

Suzzycue will be comparing three different home heaters to see how to fix her heating problem.

White -Westinghouse Micro Furnace

You can see how small this heater really is.

You can see how small this heater really is.

Too Small for My Heating Needs

My living-room, in my apartment is large compared to some other apartments, running at 18 x 12 x 8 or 1728 cubic feet. This White-Westinghouse heater fan is good if you have it on near where you are sitting. There is a fan that propels the heat forward and two switches on the top of the unit (one for regulating the amount of heat and the other switch is for the fan speeds).

The thermostat does shut off if the room gets warmer but since the room is 1728 cu.ft. it is too big for this fan heater to keep up and shut off. Also the cord does get hot because the heater is running too long before the thermostat kicks in so that was a worry to me.

The White-Westinghouse Fan Heater is a good little heater and I would recommend it for use in recreational vehicles like Trailers or Motor-homes. It doesn't take up a lot of room and would heat up your trailer in no time flat. This heater also has a tip-over shut off so if you knocked it over in your RV it would be safe.

The White-Westinghouse Fan Heater retails for $35.00 and would be perfect for a bathroom or RV. When using heaters in the bathroom, keep them away from the tub or sink and shut them off when not in use.

Vermillion Electric Fireplace

This heater has a flame simulated inside to create a homey, warm atmosphere.

Vermillion Electric Fireplace Stove/Heater

The Vermillion Fireplace Heater does a much better job of heating the living-room. It is a self standing unit that needs very little assembly when I brought it home. I just had to screw the legs on and plug it into any regular electrical outlet.

This Vermillion fireplace is compact so is great for apartments. It has a realistic flame effect with glowing logs(this effect wouldn't show up in my photograph). It has a 4,600 BTU./hr heater in it that easily warms 400 cubic feet of space. You can adjust the thermostat and how you want the flame to look. It is also a fan forced heater that is cool to the touch.

This heater had no problem heating my living room up in a short time. It is very comforting to watch the flame effect and it gives the room a cozy, warm hug. The thing I didn't like about this fireplace is that when the thermostat shuts off ,it then blows cold air threw the fan. This is annoying, that the heat shuts off and the fan doesn't. You, then have to get up to shut the whole thing down. These units now come with remote controls so now this would be easier to deal with.

This Vermillion Fireplace retails for $249.00 but I bought it on sale for$169.00. I like how it looks. I enjoy the flame effect. It heats the room fast, and I think it is worth what I paid for it.

Garrison Oil-Filled Heater

Needs space is hot to touch this heater.

Garrison Radiator Space Heater

Garrison 7-Fin Oil-Filled Heater

This heater automatically maintains desired room temperature with three power settings low, medium and high(600,900,1500 W). The heat circulates quickly( with no fan) and silently. This heater is permanently sealed and needs no refilling. When I took it out of the box I only had to assemble the wheels on the bottom of the unit.

This Garrison radiator space heater has a comfort zone activator button that automatically sets the thermostat to 23 degrees Celsius or 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit This saves energy by maintaining the room temperature. It has a thermostat control and a tip- over safety shut off feature. It also has easy rolling casters with safety locks.

The only thing I didn't like about this heater is that it does get hot so you need to keep it away from curtains, furniture, and blankets for your safety. Also with all these heaters I have reviewed today never plug them into an extension cord, to plug them in, and shut them off when not in use.

The Garrison 7-Fin Oil- Filled Heater retails for $79.99 and I bought mine on sale for $49.95. I will be using this heater in my bedroom which is the same size as the living room. It does an excellent job of heating the room and is totally silent which is why I love it so much.

The result of this review is always the money. Did heating with these heaters save money. Suzzycue is happy to honestly say that using her Vermillion Fireplace in the living room and her Garrison oil filled heater in her bedroom cost her $90.00 for the heat last January. This is a savings of sixty dollars which more than covered the cost of the Garrison heater.

The real difference was the comfort level on a scale of ten, it went from 4 to a 9 and that is what it is all about . Your comfort level. Thank you for reading and try these heaters they are good to heat with.

What kind of heat do you have?

I never thought of a ceiling fan but the ceiling heat is not warm at all. I enjoy my little red fireplace a lot and it keeps me cozy in the living room. Thanks Always exploring for stopping by and I appreciate your comments.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on November 20, 2012:

I also have radiant heat in the ceiling, each room has a thermostat. I keep it turned to comfort zone. This will be the second year in this home and last year it wasn't warm enough for me, so i bought a fireplace heater and really liked it. I might add that having a ceiling fan helps in keeping the heat flowing downward. Interesting hub and helpful..Thank you..

Susan Britton (author) from Ontario, Canada on November 20, 2012:

Now they are energy efficient and shut off when they heat to 70 degrees. I like my garrison oil heater in the bedroom because I can't hear it and I love to watch the little red fireplace is so cozy and nice. Thanks for your comment and stay warm . It is warm here today about 60 degrees. It sure doesn't feel like the end of November at all. Have a great Thanksgiving Lipnancy.

Love your reviews. When I was working I tried just about all the heaters available to stay warm. The problem that I had in this older building was finding a heater that did not suck a lot of electric.

Susan Britton (author) from Ontario, Canada on November 19, 2012:

Thank you Shiningirisheyes. I enjoy watching that little red stove but a real wood fireplace is so nice. I love the smell of a real fireplace but the Vermillion is a lot less work and puts forth a cozy warm hug into the room also.

Shining Irish Eyes from Upstate, New York on November 19, 2012:

The Vermillion Electric Fireplace seems like a fabulous alternative for economic savings and it is a beautiful addition to the room.

We are burning wood like crazy. The good think is its from tree that came down in last years storm.

Great reviews for so many of us trying to reduce costs.

Susan Britton (author) from Ontario, Canada on November 19, 2012:

Thank you Billy Buc. I have only had mine for a year and it does wonderful. Why don't they last? Do they leak oil? Curious.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on November 19, 2012:

We have several of the oil-filled heaters and we really like them; they don't tend to last as long as I would like, but while they work they do a great job.

Useful info my friend.
