Increasing my Earnings on Medium
I signed up to Medium as a writer in 2020 and started actively writing in September. The first couple of months were somewhat uneventful, I had no idea what I was doing. Although I have been writing for revenue share platforms for a while, I had no idea how to write for Medium. I began by writing what other people were writing. Mainly personal development content and some random news content thrown in for good measure. My earnings were bad, really bad.
By early 2021, I had managed to increase my monthly earnings from $5 to $100 to $1000. Amazing! How did I do it?
What is Medium?
Firstly, I cannot assume that everyone here knows what Medium is. For the sake of the newbies, here is an explanation:
Medium is a revenue share platform that launched in 2012. It’s the brainchild of Ev Williams of Twitter fame. You create written content and earn money according to the number of people that read your content. The amount of time people spend reading your content is crucial because the longer they read, the more you earn.
The great thing about Medium, it’s an ad-free platform. Meaning, you don’t get distracted by adverts popping up here and there. It’s a clean, distraction-free platform so, if you hate adverts, head over there and browse.
The revenue comes from user membership fees, if you want unlimited access to Medium content, you pay $5 per month or $50 per year. Every time a member reads your content, you get a small percentage of their membership fee. It’s actually genius! I love it!
Let’s get into the meat of the article, I know why you are here, to find out how I grew my Medium earnings from $5 to $1000 per month.
Here goes! Firstly, take a look at the screenshot below of my Medium earnings:
My Medium Earnings Proof
How I Grew My Medium Earnings from $5 to $1000 Per Month
I Picked Two Niches
At first, I was just writing whatever came to mind, which is something I do now however, at the time I needed to build my influence and create consistent content that would increase my loyal followers.
I picked two niches, health and race. You don’t have to focus on one or two niches however, I found that in the beginning, it’s best to focus on one or two to start off with. Eventually, you can branch out and create whatever you want, but experiment with one or two in the beginning.
I set myself a challenge to create 100 articles in one month and I did it. I posted two, three or four articles per day for 30 days. I tagged my content with the same tags for each niche. For example for health, I used the following tags, Health, Lifestyle, Happiness, Self-development and Fitness. Sometimes I would add one or two different tags depending on the topic of the article.
Some articles tanked and some articles were featured by the Medium editors. Creating consistent content is key, why? One of your articles might just go viral, if you create one article per week, that article might go viral but you decrease your chances by only creating one piece. If you create more, you increase your chances of hitting the algorithm and catching a viral hit.
I read and commented on ten articles per day. I leave thoughtful, informative comments on articles to increase my following, build my influence and to interact with other content creators.
Promote Articles Within Medium
I do use Social Media to promote my content however, with Medium, the golden readers are Medium members. Yes, if you promote on social media, you might just reach a Medium member however,it is less likely. Your audience are the members, the members who read and the members who write, and the members who do both.
I promote my articles within the platform my cross-referencing articles. For example, if I write an article about making money online, I cross-reference other posts about making money online. I also create short-form content about a specific topic like “How to boost your productivity,” and I will link my best articles about productivity in the article.
Another way to promote your articles within the platform is to post comments on similar articles and alert them to the fact that you have published an article on a similar topic.
Follow With Intention
I follow other Medium writers however, I don’t just follow random accounts, I read their content, post comments and follow if their content resonates with me. Building a strong, loyal following on Medium can help to boost your earnings. You don’t want to just follow blindly, building an army of loyal followers who consistently read your content is better than building a list of followers who just follow you because you follow them.
At first, I would share my content on Facebook groups however, I realised that most people would just quickly glance at your article, leave a few likes and leave. It didn’t help my earnings at all. I no longer share my content on Facebook groups however, I do browse Facebook groups and read the content on there. I use two platforms to share my content those are:
Many Stories and Pinterest. Many Stories is a content sharing platform and Pinterest, well, you know what it is. I get more traction from Many Stories however, I still make an effort to share on Pinterest, especially when I write content about health, women’s issues and motherhood.
I wrote an article on a controversial topic, it wasn’t planned. It was just one of the articles that I had on my list of titles. This article went viral and my Medium account has never been the same since.
Medium is probably the best revenue-share platform out there. I can go for days without writing content and still make money on there which is a wonderful thing. I highly recommend Medium, especially if you are just starting out as an online writer or blogger.
In my opinion, there is no exact science to making money on there, however, publishing consistent content is crucial, you don’t have to write every day to make money however, you must remain consistent. Posting three times per week is a good place to start.
Writing content and expecting it to go viral without putting in the work is like planting a seed and leaving it to go dry. You need to create content and water it regularly by following other writers, reading and commenting and sharing your content within the platform and off the platform. As stated above, I share my content on Many Stories and Pinterest although, I believe that Many Stories is more effective.
When you first start, pick one or two niches and create lots of content using the same tags. This helps the algorithm and the editors recognise you as a top writer in that particular niche. I am a top writer in health, race, entrepreneurship and self-improvement. I continue to create content in these niches and I am earning $1000 or more each month.
If you have not joined Medium, I highly recommend that you sign up and start creating content on there. Signing up as a member is the best way to start earning money because it allows you unlimited access to the platform. Without unlimited access, you can’t read and comment on as many articles as you want.
I hope you enjoyed my article about increasing my earnings on Medium, I wish you all the success and luck in the world! You deserve it!

Hi vocalcoach, I really think you should consider writing on there. Because you can make a decent extra income on there compared to here. They have changed the rules slightly now though. To join the partner program, you need to have 100 followers and have written at least four articles I think by the end of this year. It is easy to get those followers by joining facebook groups, I had am on nearly 2k followers and I don't even try to get those followers. They just flood in. It is best to pay the monthly $5 though to have unlimited access to the platform but it is worth it.

Now, I'm interested in writing for Medium. Clearly it's time for me to make a change. Thanks for this information and the tips for this resource.

It is sad, I am from the UK but I live in Ghana now and they don't allow it here either. I got in before I moved here and to be honest, it's unfair. I tried to sign up to create a pen name account and I couldn't. They wouldn't let me sign up to the partner program. How do you like it here?

It is sad that Medium doesn't yet pay people from India and Brazil because their payment processor doesn't allow it. They said they are working on it, but they have seen saying that for a long time. I wouldn't write articles for free. Hope they enable access soon. Interesting, honest article. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing your experience there. I am actually signed up, but I have not actually written for them. Maybe your article will inspire me after I get through the busy months of my work season.
