Cheryl works with organizations that help disenfranchised individuals find ways to better their lives.
Subtle reasons your ends don't meet
Many rules and regulations have changed over the decades, therefore a number of people find that money does not go as far as it used to. Credit card companies now charge late fees and realtors have applications fees that once were unheard of. Pay attention in the grocery stores and you will see that you are getting less for your money for two reasons. Prices are going up and product sizes are shrinking. I remember when I purchased two bags of sunflower seeds for $1.00 and each bag had 230 calories. The calorie content decreased and now there are 130 in each bag. The snack is still two for $1.00 but there is less of the product in each package.
There was a time when if you overdrew your bank account you had three or four days to cover the overdraft, without penalty. If a check was presented and you had insufficient funds, the bank would run it through once for free and then a second time before charging you a fee. Today a check may hit your account immediately as soon as it’s presented,This no longer leaves wiggle room, or time to get the money in without a penalty. Many financial institutions pay the check and charge you only one overdraft fee, but others run the item through multiple times causing you to possibly have hundreds of dollars in overdraft fees. Some banks and credit unions now charge additional fines for every 10 days your account is in arrears. Even if your overdraft was an honest mistake, if you cannot clear up the matter right away, you may incur enormous penalties. It is actually illegal to float checks without money in the bank and the term for this is check kiting. I worked a job where quite a few people did this but the intention was not to defraud, but only to make it until pay day.
Utilize mobile apps
One way you can save or earn extra money is by utilizing mobile apps. McDonald's offers buy one get one free deals, or signature sandwiches for only a dollar. Burger King has an offer where you pay $5.00 and get a free small coffee for 30 days. Krispy Kreme app users can earn a free dozen donuts for once they have gained a certain amount of points. Search the Internet and you will find a number of mobile apps that pay you to play games or take surveys and the money is deposited into your bank or PayPal account.
Change your life
A fun way to gain a little extra cash is to save the change each time you break a bill. You can drop it in the bottom of your pocketbook, or place it in a jar and watch it grow. Those nickels, dimes and quarters really add up and by the end of the month, you may have $5.00 or $10.00 extra. This money comes in handy when you are short on funds or can be used in other ways. You can fill up the jar and give it to a child or grandchild on a special occasion, or use the change at the laundromat or an arcade.
Go on a scavenger hunt for loose change and you may be pleasantly surprised at what you find. Shake out old pocketbooks, as well as coat and jacket pockets. Search couch and chair cushions, and even your vehicle. You may even find cash along with the change, This may sound trivial for those who have ready cash, a credit card or can get a bank loan in a time of need, but many Americans are finding they no longer have those options. If you are a walker, be on the lookout for change or even paper money on the ground.
Earn money online
Another way to earn extra cash is online. Search the Internet and please read reviews so you do not fall for a scam. Legitimate companies will not ask you for any money upfront, so keep that in mind. You can get paid to give online reviews of products, answer survey questions, and being a secret shopper in retail establishments. Inboxdollar.com and Sendearnings.com are two popular sites which pay when you click on adds, purchase products, complete surveys or watch videos.
Take advantage of your local community
Go in search of resources that your city, town, and community have to offer when you are in a jam. Goodwill and other thrift shops offer really nice values today. You may find like new, or even brand new shoes, clothing, household appliances at a fraction of the price. Check with your local social services department, community resource centers or even churches. You may be able to find food and clothing pantries that help in a time of need. If you have to spend your grocery money for an unexpected car repair or medical expense, you should not have to go hungry.
if you have any old cell phones you are not using you can take the to Kroger or other places where you can get an evaluation and cash on the spot. You naturally won’t get market value, but you may get $20.00 or even $100.00 depending on the make and
If you are age 55 or older, you can take advantage of senior citizen deals. Ask questions at the places you frequent to find what they have to offer. Some companies offer a general discount for senior citizens, others have a certain day of the week for senior discounts. If you can, set aside the money you have saved and have it on hand when things get tight. You can use it just to get by or do something special like go to a movie or have a meal at your favorite restaurant. Most movie theaters also offer special senior discounts, so that's a double bonus.
Coupons, discounts, BOGO, sweepstakes and contests
There have been women who have been on television shows, sharing how they purchase hundreds of dollars of groceries for mere pennies. These ladies utilize coupons on a regular basis and it pays off. You may also want to take advantage of BOGO, (Buy one get one free). When you have the additional money, purchase two or more of the items that you use on a regular basis. When times get tough you will have extra in your freezer, refrigerator, or pantry, instead of running out and not having money to buy more.
Free sweepstakes and contests are not guaranteed, but if you never enter you will never have the chance to win. Since it does not cost any money, there is no harm only a little time is required. If you are someone who is not prone to gambling addiction, you may get lucky with scratch-off lottery tickets from time to time. A good rule of thumb is to only play once or twice a week and only use a portion of the change you have found or money you saved. Should you win a few dollars you can set the ticket aside and cash it in when you find your money is tight.
Become a rewards member
Grocery stores and other companies now have rewards compensation for loyal customers. Rewards members can take advantage of discounts on products that others cannot. At Kroger, in addition to saving on purchased items, you can earn from ten cents up to $1.00 off per gallon of gas, based on the number of groceries you have purchased each month. At Sheetz, you can get a free drink or coffee after using your rewards card 10 times to purchase gas. At Pizza Hut you can earn free food by using punch cards or ordering online. There are people who will never even have to consider any of these suggestions, but for others, utilizing discounts, rewards, and freebies can mean the difference in going to bed hungry or their vehicle running out of gas.
