How to Make Money Freelancing Online

Georgiana is a London-based marketing consultant, business coach, author and blogger.

My Freelancer Story In a Nutshell

I have been making money online for the past two years (as of 2014), working from home full-time. I started from nothing, straight after I graduated University.

I simply knew there is an opportunity online and I took it! I worked online for the pay check at the end of the month (well, mostly end of the week) and I worked for the future, building platforms and businesses that will later generate passive income.

I am still doing the same today, more focused on the second option.

Update - 8 years later of Making Money Online Freelancing

I found this article in my drafts, that for some reason I can't remember why I took offline. It gave me the perfect opportunity to write a 8 year later update. I wrote this back in 2014 and I'll give you the 2022 update.

I am now a full time freelance marketing consultant specialising in Google Ads (I'm a Google Ads partner) and overall digital marketing strategy. I went off freelance platforms a few years ago, but I do owe my growth to them.

Through client recommendations that started on those platforms I have build the client base I have today.

I was able to increase my income exponentially and make a full time living from home whilst travelling the world and then getting married and having babies. I currently have 2 babies and I still run a successful freelance business whilst I also run a Youtube channel and help other women start a freelance business, through my online content and courses, trainings and books.

This year I celebrate 10 years as an entrepreneur, with freelancing being at the core of my income.

Important lesson 8 years after writing this article

Keep going! As you'll see in this article I wasn't making a lot at the beginning. I had to actually quit and go get a job twice so I can pay for life in London when I was done being a full time digital nomad (I never stopped travelling).

But I kept going. I grew my skills (learnt skills that I loved and paid well like digital marketing strategy, web development, google ads, facebook ads, funnels, etc). It's all available to everyone to learn.

I also grew my mindset, my self belief and my skills around finding clients, keeping clients, managing workload and deadline and results and all of that.

It's a learning journey.

If you want to start this, give yourself the time to grow. Stick with it. Have a reason why and use that as your motivation.

For me it was freedom to travel, freedom to be home one day when I have kids (which now I've been a mom for 3.5 years and I've been home full time with my kids as a freelance marketing consultant) and creative freedom to do work I love.

What is the reason why you're researching how to make money online freelancing? What do you dream of?

That's the most important piece of the puzzle.

Oh, and you might fail. Like I did twice. Just get up. Do it again.

You lose all the clients? Burn out on freelance platforms? Do it again. Try something different. Keep at it. Trust yourself. You'll get there.

Freelance Websites I Made Money On

Can You Really Make Money Online with Freelance Jobs?

Yes! You can really make money online with freelance jobs, I have made several thousands for the past years and so many other freelancers.

In a nutshell, freelance jobs are what I call 'contractor jobs online'. You are self-employed and you find your own clients who pay you per project. Needless to say, you can actually get jobs that pay you a salary, online, and resemble a traditional job, only that is worked from home.

I won't bore you with more details, let's get straight into the answer of the question here - 'Can you really make money with freelance websites?'.

Instead of me giving you opinions I will just be honest and briefly show you my journey on the freelance websites I have made money with, including photos with proof of income.

I hope this article will help you to find freelance jobs quicker and simply serve as a foundation to the beginning, or middle, of your journey.

2022 Update

As this is from 2014 - here's a quick 2022 update. It looks like Elance as it was doesn't exist anymore it merged with Upwork. I've never worked on it but I heard it's as good as Elance if not better.

Making Money With

My first freelance ever was on It is a freelance website that uses the 'bidding system'. Clients post jobs and you, as a freelance, bid for them, with a proposal and a price.

Elance is fairly easy to use, but some tips could help you get around quicker, which I promise to write a hub about soon enough.

However, in a nutshell, you find jobs in one of the categories available, send proposals and delivers the jobs that are awarded to you. The system is secure and uses the Escrow system. I have worked there and made a lot of money and never really had any major problem. Not to say that problems can't occur.

A word of advice - unless you really trust the client, don't start work until the full funds have been paid in the Escrow Deposit.

  • Yes
  • I made a total of £2,300 on - that's approximately $3,775 according to today's exchange rate (see picture) My Proof of Income My Proof of Income

Making Money With is similar to Elance, but slightly more innovative. It uses the standard 'bidding system' and Escrow, but it also has feature called 'Hourlies'. This unique feature is basically a 'mini-advert' you place as a freelancer saying what service you offer, for what price and in how much time. I guess you could say it's very similar to Fiverr (another popular freelance website).

What I like the most about PeopleperHour is that it works with 3 currencies - $, £ & €. This came in pretty handy as I live in United Kingdom and exchanging $ into £ has always brought me loses.

2022 Update on PeopleperHour

This was a catalyst for me. I've come to find some amazing clients here and really learn how to use this platform. I went on to make a lot more money on it and get some recommendations that led me to my biggest paying and longest standing clients.

I also worked with so many freelancers on this platform, it's always been my favourite freelance platform online.

Can You Make Money With Freelance Jobs on

  • Yes
  • I made approximately $1,142 on*

*As doesn't show total earnings, $1,142 is an estimate figure for 141 articles at $8.10 (Elite rank pricing) My Proof of Income My Proof of Income

Making Money With is solely for freelance writing jobs. It's a different system, that uses a dashboard where clients post quick article jobs and you pick them up and deliver. They are pre-paid and you either get accepted or rejected (with the option to have it sent back for review).

If you get the work reject, it's yours with all copyrights, and if you get accepted the balance is added to your account.

Whilst is certainly not the place to get rich, you can make money fairly quick, as you don't bid for jobs or exchange tons of emails. You simply pick up the article, after you've read the emails, write it and deliver it. is also a great place to learn about SEO and get the hang of writing web content. 2022 Update on iWriter and ContentAuthority

These were probably the worst platforms I worked on, but they thought me a lot. I learnt a lot of SEO on iWriter because clients always gave very good instructions. I wouldn't recommend them I burnt out there a lot and it's the reason why I failed the first time. Freelance platforms are better than this.

Can You Make Money With Freelance Jobs on

  • I made a total of $48.70 My Proof of Income My Proof of Income

Making Money With

The Content Authority is similar to, where you pick up tasks from a job board and write them. They either get approved or rejected.

I only worked there for a bit, a few months more than a year ago, and I honestly didn't like it. They are genuine, and do pay, but I found them to be too strict with what they consider quality articles, for a pay that was simply not worth it. I also remember that we had too wait really long for the articles to get approved.

This was just my experience, others may have had better luck.

2022- 10 Years of Making Money Online Freelancing

As I've told you at the beginning, this article was initially published in 2014 and I've now just added lots of updates 8 years later.

I have a few more tips for you, which I'll share more in future articles.

  • If you're in for the long run and want to build a career making money online freelancing, don't focus just on freelance platforms. They are great to start and to generate leads, but find more ways to get higher paying clients (or turn the projects from the freelance platforms into bigger ones).
  • Build your own platforms (based on your niche and industry) - social media, email or both
  • Recommendations, recommendations, recommendations
  • Partnerships, partnerships, partnerships

The last 2 points can make a bigger impact on your growth than you can imagine. Best of luck, believe in yourself, keep at it, you can do this!

Thanks for sharing the informations on where you can have a freelance job online. Well done!

Shermia Trueheart from Texas, USA on May 14, 2014:

I'm glad you added the snapshots, that was a great unique feature most hubs about making money online as a freelance writer don't have. But, a slight suggestion, if I may? Post the time line it took you to acquire the funds that you worked for. $4,259 is good, but not if it took twelve years to acquire (just an example). I think it would give freelance writers something to strive for (as I am super competitive and would like to see if I could do the same - if not more).

Good job! It is true that you can make money on I have been on Elance for a year now. Being consistent and persistent will pay off. I have made money on Elance.

However, too many potential clients cancel their job postings. This is an interesting list. I had not heard of all the other outlets besides Elance.

Hi Tolovaj, thanks for reading and commenting, I am happy you found the hub useful. Elance and PeopleperHour have jobs in a wide range of categories, from admin work to web design and so on. Therefore, if you don't want to specialize in freelance writing but you still want to work on these sites you can still work on these platforms.

I am glad to hear you've got some good connections. If you ever use these sites and need any advice don't hesitate to come back and ask, I am happy to share my knowledge and experience with you.

Tolovaj on January 21, 2014:

Great to hear there are so many opportunities. I am not native English speaker so I am not interested in these jobs, but I made few interesting connections on different writing platforms and I hope this is a start of something bigger. Thanks for all these addresses, the may come handy:)

Georgiana (author) from London on January 07, 2014:

Yes, go to the Articles Pending Review section and you can see your article, but you won't be able to edit it. Stay positive I am sure it will get accepted. And if it gets rejected you've got a hub for here and always a chance to try again. Good luck!

lilcupcake on January 07, 2014:

Is there anyway to view submitted articles on iwriter? i just wrote my first one! waiting for rejection now haha.

Georgiana (author) from London on January 07, 2014:

I agree with you, I've gone through the same thing, and the most important thing I wanted to know is if the website I was about to work on was genuine and if I was wasting my time. For any help you need don't hesitate to contact me, I'm happy to share with you my knowledge.

lilcupcake on January 07, 2014:

Okay :] thanks for the advice! it helps to actually talk to someone i know is real vs. reading more and more stuff about it from people that could possibly just be writing to promote a company.

Georgiana (author) from London on January 07, 2014:

Hi lilcupcake, thanks for reading and commenting. I wish you good luck with making money online.

If you want faster income is a great place, because you are almost guaranteed at least one (or more) article jobs per day, as you pick them yourself.

With Elance you have to spend time bidding and sending proposals, however, the pay can be better. Building passive income is also great, such as Hubpages as I see you are already working on.

I would also recommend trying out PeopleperHour, is where I seem to have found the highest rates for freelance jobs.

lilcupcake on January 07, 2014:

I just starting working online. I also write for's partner site, I'm just getting starting, so nothing special has happened. I'm 19, and im hoping this will help me save up to go to college alittle. I'm mostly hoping it's helpful when im IN college, because by that time i'll have a reputation and some followers.

It's been pretty discouraging thus far, but i know it takes time to build up. Especially trying to please the google adsense gods, thats whats killing me! anyway, thanks for the encouragement to keep working at it!

Georgiana (author) from London on January 06, 2014:

MiltonKelly, thanks for your comment I'm very happy you enjoyed the article. After working with freelance jobs for so long I thought it was time to share my experience and hopefully give newcomers some confidence that is indeed possible to make money with freelance jobs.

I won't say you can make fortune and get rich, as it really depends on effort and willingness to learn, but it's possible to make money online, and the income can be earned from anywhere in the world which is the best part I believe.

Thanks again for reading and commenting.
