The Facebook Marketplace homepage

Facebook is easily one of the more popular (if not the most popular) social networking websites on the Internet today, and nearly everyone and their grandmother has an account. Therefore, using the Facebook Marketplace application is a great way to advertise for things you want to sell, and also make a little extra money. The ‘Marketplace’ is actually a collaboration between Facebook and the listings company Oodle.

This Facebook application is easy to use, plus, you’ll have access to hundreds of potential buyers. This guide will tell you what you can advertise, what to include in your listing, and will also give you tips for dealing with potential customers.

1) Using the Marketplace Application

You can list any possessions that you want to sell or put up for rent. These can include cars, apartments, clothing, electronics and books. If the items are used, make sure that they are in good condition. If they are brand new and still in the original packaging, be sure to include this in the description. Potential buyers would be more encouraged to purchase if they know that the item has never been used.

All you need is your Facebook account. Log on to the Marketplace here and you will be directed to the homepage. Using your basic Facebook information, it will determine the area, city or country you live in, and automatically show other listings from that area. Also, when you post, you can choose what area it would be advertised in.

The best way to advertise a product is to include photographs of it in the listing, especially if it is a car or apartment. If it is something like a book or video game, you can easily find an image on a search engine and use it. Potential buyers like to see what the actual item looks like. Also have a clear description of it.

2) Creating a New Listing

To create a new listing, simply click the orange ‘Post’ button at the top right corner. A small dialog box will come up: this is where you enter the information for the posting. Choose a category for the advertisement to be listed in (for example, a Biology dictionary can be posted in the ‘Textbooks’ section of the ‘Books’ category). Be sure to include pictures, information, the asking price (if you are willing to negotiate, be sure to include this as well!) and ways for people to contact you, such as a phone number or an email. People can also contact you via your Facebook account. Plus, you can post this listing to your news feed so that your contacts and friends can see it as well.

Your posting expires thirty days after being published. However, you can easily put it back up by going to the list of your posts on your accounts page, and clicking the ‘Restore’ button. This saves you from having to create new listings over and over again.

Sometimes your post can get buried under the newer ones as more listings are posted by other users. Here’s a useful tip – every now and then, click on your post, and you will see a small button over it saying “Promote to Top of Results”. Clicking on this will make your post jump to the top of the others in the same category, and it would be the first seen by people searching. This will give you a better chance of someone wanting to buy your item.

3) Replying to Potential Buyers

People that are interested in possibly purchasing or renting from you can leave comments on the posting, or contact you via Facebook. Answer them in a relatively quick manner, and exchange contact information so that they can buy the item from you. The most popular (and safe) method is to meet in a public area such as a mall or park, so that you can make the exchange.

If the person never replies despite your efforts, do not feel insulted or disheartened. The person may not be able to afford the item any longer, found a substitute or is simply no longer interested. Just keep advertising, and you’ll eventually find a buyer.

I hope that this article has been helpful to you, and I wish you success in your adventures in the Facebook Marketplace!

Great article, and advice on meeting in public areas to close the deal and deliver the product. So many people have been caught in very dangerous situations, (ie Craigslist) by not meeting in public. Thank you for following me. I hope I can be of some help.
