Wooden Garden Bridges

Wooden garden bridges have long been popular focal points in gardens. They add architectural structure to the garden and a touch of style ranging from elegant to romantic to whimsical.

Whether for practical, symbolic, or decorative use, there are wooden garden bridges for everyone in every style and we've rounded up a variety of the best we could find for you to see.

Oriental, plain, natural, country look, and modern styles guarantee you'll find a wooden garden bridge that's as perfect for your garden as the famous wooden Japanese bridge at the Gardens of Giverny featured in so many beautiful works of art painted by Monet.

Wooden Garden Bridges

Plain or fancy, wooden garden bridges make a statement of peace and calm in your garden. Over water or integrated into your garden path, you can't go wrong with wooden garden bridges.

Did You Know...?

According to Zen symbolism, bridges represent crossing from one world to the next, a symbolic cleansing so you can enter the pure world of nature appropriately.

Japanese style wooden garden bridges are great for adding extra interest and style to your garden. Imagine adding some pretty lights around the bridge and perhaps lights hung in a nearby tree.

Since the bridges in Japanese gardens are often painted red, you might want to add some red paint to the cross lattice or to the entire bridge. Most wooden bridges can be painted but some must be exposed to the weather for a year or two first. If you do want to paint a wooden garden bridge, make sure the one you are purchasing can be primed and painted and if there are any manufacturer recommendations for both preparing the bridge for painting and for the type of paint to use.

Landscaping with Wooden Garden Bridges

Decorative wooden bridges come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles so look for one to complement the style of your garden.

From rustic adirondack bridges that would enhance early twentieth century Craftsman, Bungalow, and similar styles influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement to simple structures with clean lines befitting the serenity of an Asian influenced landscape, there are garden bridges that will add a welcome focal point to your yard.

Did You Know...?

Bridges can be made from many materials including concrete, steel, and stone, but wood is the most popular and least costly. It is also very versatile.

You will enjoy the charm of adding a wooden garden bridge to your backyard. If you have a water feature on your property such as a stream or small pond, one of these wooden garden bridges might be just what you need to turn it into a focal point and add a touch of romance.

If you have no water, it easy to add a faux path or pond of small stones as shown above. You can also get a lovely effect by creating a "river" of low growing groundcover for your bridge to cross. Should you decide to use groundcover, be sure to choose a shade loving variety for crossing under the bridge. You can also incorporate a bridge into your garden as a decorative element.

Left natural or painted for a pop of color, you can enjoy a wooden garden bridge for years to come.

Handy? Why Not Make Your Own Wooden Garden Bridge

If you are handy with woodworking tools, consider building a wooden garden bridge. You can customize the size and look of your bridge to make it unique or use existing plans that come complete with material lists and step-by-step illustrations. There are free plans and instructions available online at many DIY sites and the sites of major home improvement stores. You can also try your local library's collection of woodworking magazines and books.

Before you start, consider whether the bridge is simply decorative or if it will be used, who will use it. If useful as well as decorative, make sure it will be accessible and safe to cross, especially if used by children or the elderly. That will help determine the width of your bridge, estimate the weight it needs to support, and, if railings are needed and, if so, how tall they should be and how close vertical supports need to be. (You want to prevent anyone falling through or getting stuck between supports.)

If it is a large bridge and being used to cross a swimming pool or small stream, check local building codes first to see if you need a permit for it, if there are specifications you need to follow and, if so, what they might be.

Create a Peaceful Retreat in Your Yard

Bridges create a soothing ambience in the yard or garden. Whether you want the bridge to provide a place for meditation, reflection, and contemplation, or just to relax and unwind, a wooden bridge contributes to the overall ambience of your or garden.

You can complement your bridge with a cottage garden of hollyhocks and other old-fashioned plants, grasses, an elegant weeping tree, or easy-care perennials to add to the effect you want. Garden bridges are versatile elements of your landscape. You can situate a bridge to look as if it has been there a long time, punctuate a particular section of your yard, or even provide an element of surprise.

A lovely addition to any garden - such a varied style of garden bridges to consider too.

Gayle Dowell from Kansas on April 20, 2013:

I love garden bridges. They are an invitation to cross over and explore the other side, to peer over and see below from a different viewpoint. My hubby built one for me across our creek. Sometimes I just go out and sit on the edge and watch the water below.

I really love these. We don't have a place for one, but my mom-in-law and her husband have one on their property; one of my favorites of my own paintings is of that wooden bridge (it was a hit with them, too!).

I always love being in a beautiful garden. I think it's a part of the human psyche. If you choose to believe the book of Genesis, isn't it interesting that the first home is not called a home or house or cave, it's called a garden? Garden of Eden. :) Just a thought.

Gregory Moore from Louisville, KY on September 29, 2012:

They would definitely add a touch of class to any garden or back yard!
