A Tempting Offer
Following Our Free Trial
We were offered the demo model for half price, which was tempting; but I refrained as it was still a lot of money at the time.
Albeit getting a Robo Mower is still on my wish list and no doubt I will get one when I've got nothing more important to spend money on or save for.
My Personal Review of This Geeky Mower
Having Tried it Out For Myself in a Free Trial
In 2001 we were approached by the Bristol Evening Post (our local newspaper) and asked if we would trial three household products (washing machine, vacuum cleaner and this robotic mower) for a week and give our feedback as part of a feature article they were running.
After placing the base station on the lawn, laying out the wire around the edge of the lawn and plugging the base station into the mains, I placed this geeky robo mower into its base station to charge; and once charged on its merry way it went.
The mower did an excellent job, with just 24 hours randomly meandering around the lawn it had already given it a good cut and by the end of the week the lawn was almost immaculate.
What can I say, well if you have a lawn and find cutting it a weekly chore then I highly recommend it; provided you have the spare cash e.g. it's not cheap.
The Price at the time started at £1,000 for just a basic model that manages up to 500 square metres of lawn and their top range model for 5500 square metres was a staggering £3500. So to buy one (even the basic model for small lawns could put a dent in your wallet), but if you have the spare money (pin money) then I highly recommend a robotic mower; it certainly would be a talking-point at your BBQs.
Read on and learn more about this geeky lawn mower; and then if you do decide to treat yourself to one you can sit back all summer long, relaxing on your patio or decking and admire your neatly cut lawn; while you impress your neighbours as they battle to keep their lawns neat and tidy.

Robotic Grass Cutter in Action
Watch the video above to see this geeky lawn mower in action in our garden. This is an old video clip I made when we were asked to trial this geeky device out for an article in a local newspaper.
Robotic Lawn Mowers
What is This Geeky Robotic Mower?
It's an Automated Mower to Cut Your Grass
The Robo Mower is a device that randomly meanders around you lawn cutting the grass as it goes, changing direction randomly whenever it bumps into an object or reaches the edge of the lawn.
It knows where the lawn ends because before you use it for the first time from the base station you layout a thin wire all around the edge of the lawn, placing it at ground level and pegging it in at regular intervals so it and the pegs quickly becomes buried by new growth of grass and becomes invisible; with no risk of you or anyone else tripping on them. The wire gets a tiny electric current from the base station and when the Robo Mower goes over the wire it detects it and knows that it's the edge of the lawn so changes direction.
The Base Station sits on the edge of the lawn, preferably in the corner and near the house, and is plugged into the mains. The Robo Mower returns to the base station whenever it gets hungry and recharges before returning to its relentless task of keeping your lawn neat and tidy.

Who Makes It?
The mower demonstrated in this review article is made by Husqvarna a large and well established International company who's been trading for many years specialising in garden tractors and mowers. For the very large gardens e.g. country estates small garden tractors and riders (sit on tractors) and for the more modest and small gardens more conventional lawn mowers and Robotic Mowers.

Good Conversation Piece
Having had a taste of what these are like from the week’s trial I did for a local newspaper I'm sold on the idea and would love one if I could afford it.
They’re not cheap but if you can afford one then they are a pleasure to watch while you relax on your decking or patio and they make a good conversation piece when you invite friends around for a few drinks and a BBQ in the summer.

Impress Your Neighbours With a Geeky Robo Mower
My personal review and video demonstration of a geeky robotic lawn mower that automatically cuts your grass as you sit back and relax on your patio.
This review article is written by me having had the pleasure of trying out the Auto Mower by Husqvarna for myself as part of weeks trial for a local newspaper article.
My experience from the trial is that these geeky robo mowers do a great job of doing all the work for you, and with no effort on your part quickly cuts a neat lawn. They're also great fun watching while they silently meander around your lawn; and its certainly something that's on my wish list for whenever Ive got a bit of spare cash to splash out on a luxury but very useful garden appliance.

Feeding Your Lawn
The one great thing about robotic lawnmowers is that they cut the grass gently over a short period of time, and all the grass clippings being small quickly compost to provide a natural feed for the lawn; thus negating the need to constantly feed it with artificial lawn feeds.
However, conventionally, when mowing the lawn most people collect their grass clippings in the detachable grass box situated at the front or back of their lawn mower; and then either add them to the compost bin (if they garden organically), or through the grass cuttings away. Then (unless they just leave the lawn so that deteriorate in quality over time) most people spend time and money on buying artificial lawn feeds.
I don’t have a robotic lawnmower (only because it’s still a little pricey), so instead I use a more conventional lawnmower with the detachable grass box fitted to the back. However, I’ve removed the grass box completely and just let the grass cuttings to compost naturally, where they land on the lawn, as a natural organic way of keeping the grass fed.
The grass box to my previous lawnmower fitted on the front so there was no great problem. However, because the grass box to my current lawnmower is at the back (by not fitting it to the lawnmower does mean that without making modifications) I would get spayed with grass clippings as I cut the lawn. Therefore I’ve fixed a couple of old heavy duty rubber car mats to the back to act as a screen; which works very effectively.
Clipping Returns to the Lawn
Since this review I've finally treated myself to a Robotic Lawnmower; as demonstrated in the video below:-

Thanks Chris, what a wonderful idea. I would never have thought of that, but if and when I do get a robotic lawnmower building a garage for it would certainly be on my agenda. Albeit I don't currently have any plans to buy one because they are still expensive; but if I did I'd be looking to design one that's ascetically pleasing, and in keeping with the garden landscape.

Personally i have no experience with these gadets except that whenever a gardener comes to our house to cut trees or fix the terasse or walkways, they try to talk me into on of these robotic lawn mowers.
But my sister has one of these. Quite a fancy one which automatically returns to its docking station. I want to share a little story:
The robot is a vehicle. And a vehicle needs what? A garage. You simply don´t leave this piece of technology in the middle of the lawn for the rabbits and chipmonks to play with it. These things have kind of a docking station, a power outlet that they hook up to for recharge. So it is a good idea to protect the robot and the dock with something like a tiny garage, a dog hut.
And here the idea was born: Many years ago we had a large dog, an Afghan by the way. To transport him we had bought a large plastic cage. The cage was even certified for aircraft transport, which we did, but that is another story.
The dog cage comprised of 2 halves. We took one half, enlarged the food opening so the robot could run in. Then fixed it in a conveniant location of course upside down (with power outlet) on the lawn and our futuristic shelter for the robot lawn mower was operational.
I personally like the exercise and the meditation while trotting behind a "real" and "loud" mower, but again, that is another story :-)

I would definitely buy one of these, but they would make my husband jealous! :)
Arthur Russ (author) from England on May 30, 2013:
@dakadare: I only filmed it in operation for about ten minutes. It has a small blade underneath that cuts as close as any other rotary lawn mower so leave it to meander around your lawn all afternoon and by the evening you have a nicely cut lawn; let it out to play two or three times a week and you soon end up with the best cut lawn in the neighbourhood for the least amount of work.

I was watching the video and wondering if it was actually cutting the lawn. Didn't look like it!
DLeighAlexander on May 28, 2013:
Looks like a fun way to mow the lawn! Also seems a lot quieter than a regular lawn mower.
junebugco on May 27, 2013:
I was wondering how it knew where the edge of the lawn was. Thanks for sharing.

We were in Denmark for the summer, a couple of years ago... driving through a small town, and my daughter suddenly exclaimed "What the HELL was that?" so we turned the car around and looked in these people's garden... where one of these things was going about its business. It's definitely an intriguing idea... but I think I'll wait till the technology gets a bit more widespread and the price comes down. Thank you for a nice review, though!

I think it's great! I would love to have one. I would like to win it as a prize though. Don't want to pay for it!
