White Flowers Literally Light Up After Dark
Plant A Moonlight Garden, And Enjoy Flowers All Evening Long
I have the perfect garden for people that want to enjoy their garden long after the sun has gone down. Whether you're a romantic at heart or just work until long after dark, a garden that comes to life after dark can offer you a perfect setting to relax or pursue romance.
Do you work all day, and by the time you get home it's too late to enjoy the garden you spent many hours, planting, and tending to? Why not consider planting an evening garden. A garden that comes alive at dusk, and gets more enchanting after dark. Virtually coming to life with beautiful hues, and soft scents that float through the night air. A Moonlight garden can offer you a wonderful place to wind down after a hard day. Perhaps you might just enjoy a sweet fragrance drifting through your bedroom window and lulling you off to good night's sleep.
Getting Acquainted With Flowers That Thrive At Night
If you intend to attempt to plant an evening garden it's important to keep in mind, you need flowers that will be luminous in the moonlight, flowers that will be showy way after sundown. A moonlight garden should consist of flowers that are basically light in color. Flowers that are white or very light in color are the best choice. You will also want to look for flowers that limit their daily bloom time is dusk until dawn, some keeping their blooms closed during the light of day.
The Popular Moonflower Has Soft Fragrance And Are Very Luminous At Night
Purchase Plants That Have A Soft Fragrance
I think you will be pleasantly surprised that many nocturnal blooms possess wonderful pleasant fragrances. Moreover, the night air along with dew stands to intensify the scents of night bloomers. Here are just a few flowers you might consider for your evening garden. I will start with my favorite flower, the "Moonflower". Moonflower is an annual vine that loves warm weather and grows well in most zones. It has a showy large white flower and nice size deep green leaf. It blooms from dusk to dawn and has a beautiful soft scent, that is most often compared to the scent of baby powder. I suggest this is a flower you might consider planting near your bedroom window, its scent is lovely. The Moonflower plant is a climber and will require an arbor. I like to plant them from seeds, they are very easy to plant, and hardy even in poorer soil.
Alyssum Can Add A Soft Scent To The Garden
Alyssum, are easy to grow, and you will be surprised how quickly they cover your garden with a soft little lacy small flower, with a honey-like scent. They also make great border plants, they grow about 4-5 inches in height, and spread profusely. The Alyssum flower can be enjoyed not only in the evening but all throughout the day. They are very hearty grow well in most zones and bloom from early summer to late fall. I suggest you plant Alyssum in white or very light pink for an evening garden.
White Roses Show Well In The Moonlight
White rose bushes are wonderful in an evening garden. They're not only fragrant, but white roses are showy after dark. Plus they are great for cutting and can be enjoyed in a summer bouquet. Rose bushes are a good choice for an after-dark garden. Roses have great blooming power all summer and can be enjoyed all day long.
Here Are A Few Photo's Of My Moonlight Garden
Hydrangeas Are Spectacular Day Or Night !
Hydrangeas Add Height And Are Very Showy
Hydrangeas have wonderful big showy blooms that come in many different heights, and colors. Keep in mind if you want to enjoy your Hydrangeas in the evening, keep to the rule of buying light-colored Hydrangeas. They thrive in sun to partial shade and love to be watered frequently. Hydrangeas do best in an even soil of part clay part sand that drains well. As mentioned they come in different heights. It's smart to know your planting needs before you purchase your Hydrangeas bushes. I like the taller Hydrangeas placed at the back of a garden to add height to the garden. These lovely blooms are also great cutting flowers and drying for winter floral arrangements.
Soft Scent Of Lemon, And Have A Soft Glow
Pink Evening Primrose is another good choice for an evening garden. It has satiny heart-shaped petals that form an open cup-like bloom, with lovely long stamens. The scent is somewhat like a mixture of honeysuckle and lemon.
White Impatiens Are A Must In Any Evening Garden
Impatiens Give A Carpet Of Bright White Color
Impatiens is a staple in any shade garden, and are wonderful in an evening garden. Impatiens come alive at night, they prefer shade and cooler night temperatures. Their blooms take on a fresh appearance at night that is lacking in the daytime. White Impatiens truly reflect moonlight, they are almost luminous. They grow well in medium well-draining soil and bloom from early summer to fall. They don't have a fragrance but make up for it with their huge round mounds of showy small flowers.
Impatiens in hanging planters are a good addition to a garden, also wonderful in window boxes.
Give Your Evening Garden A Bit Of Extra Dimension - With a few candles, and a water feature.
A Water Feature Will Bring Your Garden Alive
Want to make your evening garden just a bit more special? Add a few well-placed candles, and a wonderful trickling water feature. Even if it's a small water feature, the soft trickling sound of water really can make any evening garden more magical.
The visual impact of the white flowers, the soft scents of the flowers. and the sounds of the evening all combine to make the evening garden a place that will calm, and soothe the spirit. A special place that you will look forward to each evening. Make sure to add a comfortable seating area, where you can really kick back, and relax.
A Bit Of Soft Lighting - Make Your Moonlight Garden Glow
With a few well-placed lighting features, your garden will take on a relaxing place to unwind at the end of a long day or a very romantic space for two to enjoy the scents of the flowers, and perhaps a balmy night breezes.
The moonlight showers down onto white flowers, and sets them aglow ...

I am a librarian and am looking for a type of flower that children ages 5-12 would enjoy planting and watching grow from the last week in June until the first frost. I thought a moonlight garden would be different than just planinting a Velvet Queen Sunflower. any Ideas?

Thank you. This gives me some great ideas for the next place I buy (I'm currently house hunting). I love spending time in the garden, especially on the evening/night.
