Give Your Walls an Instant Makeover With These No/Low Cost Design Ideas

I am a sucker for simple, fuss-free, creative DIY crafts and home improvement ideas that give an outlet to creativity and excess energy.

Walls are a very important design element, more so if you are given into staring at walls for boosting your creativity and for abstract thinking.

I believe that the world needs research on how having beautiful walls can enhance creativity and make us better and happier people!

There are a whole bunch of uncomplicated and fuss- free methods to add that x factor and make your walls stand out, figuratively of course. You can experiment with colours, tones, hues, geometric patterns, abstract art.

Bring out your personality by adding drama or sophistication or elegance or vibrance or whatever resonates with you. Make your room stand out without hurting your pocket. Here is a compilation of six ideas.

# Idea No.1– Your own Geometric Pattern Wall

Here your key partner is the humble masking tape, paints of your choice ,and lots of creativity. Here is how to go about it.

Materials needed

Paint colours of your choice, Masking Tape, Roller and paint brush

Step 1 – On a A4 sheet of paper, draw the pattern and figure out the design and colours which work best .

Step 2 – Draw your pattern on the wall and secure it neatly with masking tape on the pattern.

Step 3 - Paint your wall with a light color as a base.

Step 4 - Now paint the entire wall with a darker shade or contrasting color including on top of the masking tape.

Step 5 – Once you have painted the second layer, carefully peel out the masking tape immediately after painting. Remember to not leave it on for long.

This method works best with two colours. If you are looking at more colours there is a variation to the same.

Here Step 1 and 2 remain the same.

Step 3 : Once you have painted one section, say light blue , immediately remove the masking tape from that section and now tape it on the inside of the just coloured section . Now colour the next section. This way the lines stay sharp.

You can also choose not to remove the masking tape. The effect then will be a little different as seen below.

# Idea No.2 – The beautiful brick wall effect

A brick wall adds lots of depth and character to a room. When a brick wall effect is what your heart desires, here is how you go about it.

Step 3 – Dip the rectangular sponge on the plate with some pressure.

Step 4 – Now, take the sponge and press it on the wall tightly. The final effect looks very impressive.

It can’t get simpler than this.

# Idea No.3 – The sponge effect

You may have some waste cotton cloth, plastic bags or sponges. Here is an amazing idea for you.

Materials needed

*Paint [the one which you have chosen]

*Sponge, cotton cloth or a plastic bag

Step 1 - Paint the wall with the color you have chosen

Step 2 – Before it dries, take a sponge, cotton cloth or a plastic bag and tap it on the wall.

# Idea No.4 – Sponge effect 2

This is a little similar to the previous one, but, nonetheless beautiful.

Follow the steps given below to make your accent wall your favorite wall

Materials needed

*2 contrasting paints

*Sponge, cotton cloth or a plastic bag

Step 1 – Paint your wall with the color you have chosen and let it dry.

Step 2 – Now take a color which contrasts with the first one on a plate.

Step 3 – Then take a sponge, cotton cloth or a plastic bag and dip it in the paint which you have poured on the plate.

Step 4 – Tap them on the wall to give a super interesting effect.

Sounds similar to the previous one? Don’t get confused! The previous one was a play with a single colour whereas in this one we are playing with two colors.

# Idea No.5 – Stencil art wall

Fancy having gracious lotuses adorning your wall. Not your thing. How about an owl, a cloud, a mandala or a star. Sounds interesting ! There is an absolutely easy way that you can achieve this.

Materials needed

*Printed pattern in different sizes of gateway paper/readymade stencil

*Mop brush or stencil brush

*Masking tape or painters tape

Step 1 – Cut out the design neatly using the help of the cutter or buy readymade stencils.

Step 2 – Place the cutout on your wall.

Step 3 – Now stick it firmly on the wall by sticking masking tape on all the four sides of the stencil.

Step 4 – Take your mop brush or sponge and dip it into the chosen paint. Infact you can use even acrylic colours for this.

Step 5 – Immediately after painting, remove the masking tape carefully.

Step 6 – Give finishing touches to the edges and clean the smudges.

# Idea No.6 – Syringe Art

Sounds weird! When you think creatively , anything and everything becomes possible . In the same way, we can even paint our walls with syringe. Follow these steps and make an unique looking stand out wall.

Materials needed

* Syringes

* Paints

Step 1 – Fill the syringe with the color you want.

Step 2 – Go to the top of the wall and then release the paint, slowly.

Step 3 – Let the paint drip till the end of the wall. Only, ensure that you have protected your floor with some old newspapers/rags.

# Idea No.7 Chalkboard Wall

Have young kids who love to scribble or are you a secret scribbler yourself. Then this design is made to order for you.

Materials needed

*Chalk paint

Step 1- If there are any gaps or cracks, fill it with chalk. This works best on smooth walls.

Step 2- Paint walls using a roller slowly and carefully. With chalkboard paint, patience is key. You have to apply three coats and give ample time of several hours between each coat. Also allow the paint to completely dry before you start using the wall.

Points to remember :

Remember to only use soft chalk that can be wiped out on this wall and not hard chalk that can leave marks. Markers are an absolute no-no.

Using these methods, convert your plain Jane wall into a sophisticated diva.

What a creative piece from you!

In my childhood, I've always enjoyed decorating our rooms and home as a whole. I didn't know we can do such a makeover to the walls too. I know this could be a time-consuming process, but if we follow these, it will be worth the time. Hopefully, I'll try any of these designs to give the wall a unique look and feel. Thanks for this beautiful article!

Sowrabha, much needed during these uncertain times. It's therapeutic and relaxing. Actually I had purchased Marshall's wall art for my bedroom. It was based on heavenly bodies - stars, moon & planets, etc..
