Antique Hoosier Cabinets

Antique Hoosier Cabinets Find A Place In The Modern Kitchen

Not only do antique Hoosier cabinets lend charm to the modern kitchen, they are still incredibly practical. My 'Hoosier' was purchased by my great-grandmother. It eventually made its way into my grandma's kitchen. As a little girl, I remember getting such a thrill out of lifting up the fancy roll top to see what was hidden inside. I had mastered the art of opening regular cabinet drawers and as a youngster, the roll top presented an greater challenge. It spent many years full of canned goods and snacks and catfood in my mother's kitchen until it was recently gifted to me. It was not really until then that I was able to examine all of its features and there are plenty. Each feature of an antique Hoosier Cabinet serves a purpose. The everyday purpose of the Hoosier cabinets has changed to suit a wider range of kitchen storage needs, but the old-fashioned charm remains. Hoosier cabinets compliment any kitchen and usually have the added bonus of conjuring up scents and memories of grandma's apple pie.

A Brief History of the Hoosier Cabinet

These Hoosier cabinets originally found their way into our kitchens as early as the late 1800's but became increasingly popular between 1900 and 1940. They served a very practical purpose during a time when many kitchens weren't equipped with the cupboard and counter space that we have now. A Hoosier cabinet was a baker's dream. They came equipped with flour sifters, room for spices and baking needs and often even had baking measurement charts affixed on the inner cupboard doors. The roll out porcelain table provided the perfect work space and the cupboards up above were often full of baking supplies. Most have a metal lined drawer for storing bread products and plenty of extra drawers and cupboard space for aprons, cutlery or pots and pans. Although, their features and look modified somewhat throughout the decades, they remain distinctive. The antique Hoosier cabinet is gaining interest and finding its way into more modern kitchens. Quality new replicas of the Hoosier are increasingly available now and are being produced by quality furniture makers.

Do you have any idea where I might find the door charts for a Showers Hoosier? Mine are missing. I can find reproduction charts for other Hoosiers, but not for mine. I've read that the Showers Brothers Furniture Company was very big in Indiana until 1950.

My grandmother had one of these in her kitchen. I never knew they had a name. That is funny because she lived in Missouri while I lived in Indiana.

I wish I had room for a Hoosier Cabinet. My mom had a white one and I remember learning to make biscuits on it! It had a flour sifter on one side. I also had one for many years. My aunt still has one. :)

My mom had an antique hoosier that she bought when she and my dad got married--it was such a cool (and functional!) piece of furniture. Alas, she sold it before a move many, many years ago...
