Panic Proof Lockset Information

Just in case - a panic proof lockset can make sense in the home. Sometimes it is also referred to as a panic proof entry lockset.

So what is a panic proof lockset?

A panic proof entry lockset is part of a double cylinder deadbolt. It offers extra security to the residents of the home. What the lockset does is provide an easy way to quickly get out of your home in case of an emergency, like a fire. (see photo of the lock and lever/handle which is installed on the inside of the door)

Can you give a description?

The double cyclinder deadbolt lock is a type of lockset with a bolt without a hinge, meaning it must be manually operated. When it is locked, the bolt cannot be forced back. It can only be operated by a key type of cylinder, or in the case of the panic proof entry lockset, a lever/ handle or knob can also be used to open the door from the inside.

How does this provide security?

The panic proof entry lockset is designed to provide a means for the residents to always open the door from the inside - even without the key. Turning the knob or handle will allow for a quick exit in the case of an emergency. While it would make sense to always leave the key inside in the lock, someone else in the household may forget to do so, and in an emergency, when panic sets in, you want to get out quickly and as easily as possible. It may also be a good idea for someone who has arthritis in the hand.

You may live in a household where someone always forgets to leave the key in the lock, or when they leave, they take their key, and lock the door on the outside - while the other person left indoors, then has to fumble for their key to get out, perhaps quickly. So it can create an emergency situation.

Any precautions?

Yes, the panic proof entry lockset can make your home more vulnerable if you install it on a door with a glass panel. This can allow someone to break the glass and enter by turning the lever. Make sure the lockset is installed far enough away from the glass panels. Another option would be to use non-breakable acrylic for see-through door panels.

What else?

A deadbolt lock offers the most security. Adding the lever can be a sensible option if in the past getting out of the house has been a problem, when the only choice has been to use a key.

Do you know where to by such lock?

One downside to panic proof locksets: Because they don't require unlocking before exiting, it is very easy to find yourself locked out.

Just walk out and close the door.

If you are not properly dressed (maybe you were going for a dip in the hottub in the back yard), this can be rather embarrassing.

Well, it makes sense in a household where people go in and out. There can be so much 'key' confusion with the double cylinder lock.

Certainly something to think about. Thanks for the information!

OK well, here's a story that could have been awful. I went to visit a friend for a weekend. And when she ran out to do something I was left in the house. Of course when she locked the door from the outside - she took the key to the deadbolt lock that you have to use to unlock with a key on the inside - meaning I had no way at all to get out if there was an emergency.

When I told her about this she said it never occurred to her, and she didn't even know where her spare key was.

I have a deadbolt lock but not the double entry type. So I can get out. But if I plan a new door lockset, I may consider this.

Thanks for the information - mainly because it can make people aware of the dangers to the family of a double deadbolt lock when many people go in and out.

Rated up and nice to meet you too. I'm enjoying your hubs!
