What Can You Do With Sugar?

Whether it is in its purest form derived from sugar cane or sugar beet, sugar is an ingredient in all the sumptuous cakes and cookies.

Sugar also nurtures a sense of happiness and general well-being. It is a definitive representation of comfort food! We all love sugar and sugar has been blamed for all the ailments that we have in our body.

However, there is more to sugar than just its sweetness. Here are nine cool things you can do with sugar.

1. Use Sugar as Face Scrub

This may sound odd but sugar is good for a facial scrub.

Use about a palm-full of sugar and in a circular motion, scrub it on your wet face. Then rinse and pat dry.

Use only the regular granulated white sugar and scrub only once a week to remove the dead and dry skin.

Another version is to mix with an over-ripe banana and turn it into a body scrub.

Mix an overripe banana, 3 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of olive oil, and gently scrub it onto your body. Then rinse.

Try not to overmix the paste otherwise, it will be too soggy.

Benefits of Applying Sugar on Face

  • give a gentle yet effective exfoliation.
  • remove buildup from your skin and gives a more radiant complexion.

With these benefits, there's no need to buy face scrub anymore. Just use sugar and save money!

2. Use Sugar to Keep Ants Away

You are wondering how sugar can keep ants away. It should attract ants instead.

How to Get Rid of Ants Without Chemicals

So, if you are looking for a non-chemical way to rid ants, use sugar instead. But mix it with a detergent.

Just combine 1/4 cup of powdered detergent with the same amount of sugar and mix them thoroughly.

It will repel ants as well as cockroaches!

This concoction is effective to keep both ants and cockroaches away but its potency is short-lived. It is not a permanent solution.

3. Heal a Burnt Tongue With Sugar

If you accidentally sipped a hot beverage or ate hot spicy food and experienced a burning sensation on your tongue, what do you do?

Try sucking a small cube of sugar or any type of sugar to relieve that burning sensation. Using sugar is an excellent way to immediately soothe a burning tongue and it tastes good too.

4. Use Sugar to Keep Cake Fresh

Adding a few sugar cubes in the same airtight container as your cake will keep the cake stay fresh longer.

You can do the same with cookies. Some people even try it on cheese to prevent it from molding.

5. Use Sugar to Rid Strong Cooking Odors

If you fried garlic, cook an Indian curry, or something that left strong cooking odors in the kitchen, how to rid of this odor?

Try boiling some sugar in water. The steam will eliminate those strong cooking odors not just from the kitchen but from the rest of the house as well.

6. Cleaning Grinder with Sugar

Sugar will remove strong smell or flavor collected overtimes in your coffee bean grinders or the spice grinders

Pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar and run it for a few minutes. Viola! Sugar will absorb these offending elements and your grinder will smell fresh again!

7. Use Sugar to Keep Flowers Fresh

Simply add a tablespoon of sugar to the water in the flower vase will keep cut flowers fresh longer.

This is a good way to prolong both the dewy appearance of flowers and to accelerate the blooming of buds.

Flower requires carbohydrates that are present in the plant to blossoms well. When you cut this flower, it has fewer nutrients to give a spectacular bloom. The flower may be pale and will wilt prematurely.

Adding sugar, a form of carbohydrate, will provide this missing nutrient. To prevent any mold build-up, add a teaspoon of vinegar to the mixture as this will kill the germs.

8. How to Remove Grease From Hands

How to clean your greasy hand? Sugar will solve this problem.

Pour an equal amount of sugar and cooking oil onto your hand and gently rub them together. This will easily clean your greasy and filthy hands.

How does this work?

The sugar provides grit and works as an abrasive agent to remove the grease and grime.

9. Chinese Rock Sugar for Cough and Phlegm

The Chinese traditional remedy for cough and phlegm is steamed or boiled pear with Chinese rock sugar. It is also a delicious dessert.

The steamed version has more flavor but it takes longer to cook. It also looks more appetizing as the pear stays in shape. So, we will do the steam version.

Cooking the steam version:

  • Take 1 medium size 'not so ripe' pear - to peel or not to peel the pear, is your choice.
  • Cut off the top part of the pear.
  • Remove the core with a teaspoon then fill it with 1 tbsp rock sugar.
  • Put the top part back and place the pear into a small bowl.
  • Steam the pear for 40 minutes over medium heat; serve it warm.

Another good use for sugar is removal of body hair. I learned this from Arab friends who place sugar, about one cupful, on a counter top (stone, but any non-porous surface should do) and then simply add enough water to make a paste. This paste they then spread on their arms and waited for several minutes; washed away sugar paste along with the hair. This was standard procedure for smooth harmless arms. I never tried it but only because I don't have hairy arms; I know it worked for them ... AND I know it used in some beauty salons with a fancy name and high price!

@krsharp05, I usually place the mixture along the ant trails and if I find the source, at the source area as well. If you have small kids or pets, make sure they have no access to this, until you are done. Thanks for the printout. I am so proud of it! Thanks for the votes and your visit.

The tip on keeping ants away with sugar is interesting. I eat chocolate after eating garlic to cure strong breath with good success, not sure if it's the sugar or the cocoa that does the trick.
