Furniture, Art, and a Little Nostalgia
Nestled deep in the cornfields and sleepy country roads of Southern New Jersey, lies a hidden gem along with the equally iconic artist and proprietor of the Cripple Creek Wood Shop. Finding this out of the way the spot is just the beginning of a trip through time and nostalgia when visiting.
If you are planning a visit to the shop, the owner, Mark Merritt, is sure to share his vision as well as his passion for woodworking. The shop sits on a lonely back road, just a stone's throw from the crossroads that mark the border between the sleepy country towns of Newport and Cedarville, New Jersey. The heart and soul of the operation are housed just off the road in a rustic barn situated in the center of a former pole bean field.
A Passion for Art and Handcrafted Furniture

Then there's Mark, the brains, brawn, and proprietor of this passion-filled country wood shop.
Mark has labored for many years to bring his passion to life, "just take a look at his hands." From personally constructing the shop out of hand-sawn and milled local timber completely on-site. What's immediately evident is the precision craftsmanship and a keen eye for detail as Mark's creations are sure to delight anyone that purchases his one-of-a-kind pieces of functional artwork.
All of Mark's furniture pieces are personally handcrafted using reclaimed lumber from a bygone era. Lumber from the 1700-1800s, utilized old-growth timbers known for their durability, strength, and exceptional beauty. Nothing here is made from pressboard or inferior construction materials. The beautiful, rustic pieces that find their way to a lucky customer's home are designed to last for generations.
