The Pilgrim Rose

The Pilgrim is an English climber , bred by David Austin, 1991. United Kingdom.

The Pilgrim can be grown as a shrub which will remain quite short. At times sending up long shoots. If you want to retain a shrub like shape these canes will need to be kept cut back.

My Pilgrim is about 8 feet tall.

In 1991, David Austin introduced Rosa 'The Pilgrim', a cross between R. 'Graham Thomas' and R. 'Yellow Button'. The soft yellow flower is a definite and welcome change over some of the other yellow hued roses. The pilgrim is great as a flower for cutting.

You will find that this English rose, has continuous blooms (three flushes), is disease resistance, vigorous, and fragrant, and the flowers are unusual and beautiful.

In my mild and warm climate it seems to act more like a climber; Whereas in a cooler climate it grows like a shrub rose.

Rose, The Pilgrim

The fragrant flowers are strong and perfectly shaped. A pure egg yolk yellow rose with the outer edges laced in white.

Unusual bicolor blooms are rich yellow and white. Rosette, shallow cups have up to 140 petals, with strong mixed tea and myrrh fragrance. Large, upright bushes are 5 x 3 feet in size can be trained into climbing roses. Very healthy and a good repeat bloomer.

A the most beautiful English Climbing Roses, It produces nicely-shaped medium-large flowers. As each bud opens it reveals many petals, which forms a shallow cupped rosette, It will then open out quite flat. The color is a very delicate, soft shade of yellow, the edge of the petals are pale . The flowers repeating continuesly . The Pilgrim has a sweet fragrance which of of tea and myrrh. The plentiful green foliage compliments the flowers perfectly. Up to 8 ft.

The Pilgrim is an upright, shrub . It has deep green leaves and pale yellow, flat, fragrant flowers that bloom from summer into autumn.

Tips For Growing Beautiful Roses

  1. Planting a bare root rose, toss a banana peel into the hole before planting. The decomposing banana peel adds organic matter to the soil around the rose roots.
  2. Spread a 1 to 2 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of each rose bush. this will improve the soil while adding nutrients, it will help keep the roots cool during heat spells and cuts down on weeds..Do this about twice a year , but keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk of the rose bush.
  3. Plant some garlic among the roses. It will greatly enhance the health of the roses. You can buy garlic at the supermarket..Simply divide the cloves and plant...This will benefit the roses and you can eat it too.

I do love your hub with the classic English roses like David Austin. I am looking for this kind of rose for my garden but I am not sure whether it will properly grow in the lukewarm - whether zone like Thailand. I saw it once when I was young, the arch roses at the front door of a grocery store, lol.

Faythe Payne (author) from USA on April 05, 2013:

I am crazy for David Austin roses! They are so beautiful! I had several but, sadly, my trees grew up and threw the roses into shade. Those David Austin roses have such a heavenly scent. I love the color of yours.
