Portable Air Conditioner in the Philippines
Okay, so we recently purchased a portable air conditioner here in the Philippines. I do not even know it if it is something that is actually considered an air conditioner because it really seems more like an electric fan with ice. The idea is you put cold water in one part and ice on the other and it makes the air in the room circulate through the ice that you put in the device. The brand is Dowell Portable Air Conditioner in the Philippines.
It has three speeds. It has an "ion" feature. I think the feature is called Air Ionizer. I do not know exactly what that means. I think it is supposed to make the molecules of the air have negative charges. It is to make the air cleaner, I guess, or maybe healthier or something like that. All in all I wouldn't really know what it means but a tree icon lights up every time it is on so I guess it creates fresher air.

So that is do what it is supposed to do?
Well it does get a bit colder. In the manual it says that there should be circulation of air or ventilation in the room so I think it is a bit self-defeating compared to a real air conditioner. Plus, being that we are in the Philippines, a tropical country that is very humid, making the air go through water or ice would only increase humidity and without the ventilation like an open window it might only make things worse.
But yes it seems colder than your typical electric fan and the electric consumption is very low compared to real air conditioners that go up to one horse power, this portable air conditioner that we bought is only 90 watts. That is like one-tenth the energy consumption. That makes this product economical and at the same time environment-friendly.

All in all, I think it is quite a device to have around the house. It is actually fun to put ice on it and it adds to the whole experience. I feel that it is way colder than normal electric fans and can really be very useful during hot days. And it can get very hot and here in the Philippines and the humidity level is very high. So in that aspect it is very useful. It can get a bit loud or noise at higher speeds though, so if you would want to use it for sleeping, especially the higher speeds, it might be a bit loud or annoying.
It is great and super affordable compared to getting a new air conditioner. It is a good way of refreshing yourself from the heat of the sun and the humidity of the tropical country that is the Philippines.

Well... if the sales person told that its a portable aircon, bring it back to them and refund the money!! Tell those idiots that they are fooling people .. An airconditioner should have the compressor, evaporator, condenser etc..

Its not an air conditoner. It is a swamp cooler. In order for it to work you have to have a little bit of ventilation. My co-worker used it a lot during summer and it cools up his entire house (1,700sqft) around 72 F. Also his electric bill was cut back from $500 to $200-250 using a swamp cooler. Philippines has an advantage being its a humid country. Swamp cooler works its best in humid places.

Hey buddy, that may not be correct.
This "cooler" is evaprotive an therefore is NOT "useful" in high humidity - fact is, it adds to the humidity and in this case it is imperative that air must go out(replenished) to some degree otherwise the air keeps getting more humid - that should not be good, is it?

That is not a portable airconditioner. That Dowell is just an air cooler, that's why it can't make the room cold. And a portable airconditioner doesn't need you to put water and ice in it, but this Dowell does.
