Home Remodeling Improvement I Love Metal Roofing - In Shake or Spanish Tile Style Roofs

Metal Roofs Comes of Age - Goodbye Plain Looking Corrugated Metal Roofing.

Metal roofs comes of age - gone are the days of ugly looking yet very functional corrugated metal roofing. I love the look of high style roofs yet the maintenance is not within my means and now that has forever changed. Imagine the durability and strength of metal with the architectural quality look of quintessential and aesthetic beauty of wood shake roofing. Metal shake roofing offers all the beauty without the high maintenance cost. Appropriate for all types of homes - from ranches to two stories to modern to traditional. Even the most persnickety must admit, this is a major improvement to the aesthetic value of your home and your the character of your neighborhood and community.

Metal Roofs Not Just for Farms Anymore!

Along with the new high design of faux slate or faux Spanish tiles comes the expansion of new places. Churches pride themselves on the highest steeple and best architecture. Now the new high design faux roofs can be both aesthetically pleasing to their congregation and to the financial concerns and long term maintenance of their patrons.

Aesthetic Value without the Maintenance

Imagine the dimensional shingles that look great - forever - no fading, no maintenance - just simple beauty.

Longer Lifespan

Many roofs last 15-20 years. The metal roof has a longer lifespan - one company warranties the roof for 30 years for the paint and 40 years - yes, you heard me 40 years for the metal roof. Of course, slate and tile have a life span of 80-100 years. I was priviledged to have seen a 1800's building with a 100 year old slate roof. It would seem that slate would last forever - in the world of that particular slate roof - it was 100 years. Another metal roofing company estimates the lifespan of the metal roof as 100 years. From 40 to 100 years - the fact remains this great new roof has the looks and the durability way beyond its competitors of asphalt and real wood.

Benefits of an American Metal Roof

Valuable Warranty

Your metal roof is backed by a Lifetime non-prorated Warranty against any manufacturers defects. The paint is warranted 40 years against cracking, peeling or blistering and 30 years against fading.

I cam across this roofing material while in Green Bay. The look was distinctive and yet very classic elegance. My first experience was on a classic simple ranch. The roof took a simple structure to a new level of architectural elegance.

Will rain sound louder on my metal roof?

For normal construction methods, metal roofing does not create objectionable noise during rainstorms. Another benefit of our product's rugged texture is that it actually quiets the rain on your roof by eliminating any resonating 'sound-board' effect. The deep-textured folds in our products avoid the 'pinging' sound you might expect from a flatter metal roof.

Techo Tile is a metal panel with a deep configuration in the form of a Spanish tile; Field-Lok is a standing seam, up to 2-3/8”, that is mechanically seamed; PC Panel is a snap-on batten seam system that can also be curved; PermaShake panels simulate the look of wood grained shingles; Corrugated Panel is a traditional, economic wall or roof panel; and Multi-Purpose Panel comes in variations that start with the standing seam, to the “batten style”, to the plank and barn board. Five of these profiles are shown here and the others can be seen on the ATAS website. These roof profiles can be used for a wide range of residential and non-residential applications. They are available in a variety of finishes, including PVDF and “Cool” colors, some with choice of substrates.

Metl-Span's CFR Insul-Solar™ is a comprehensive insulated solar standing seam roof system. The system utilizes a thin-film solar laminate fused to the surface of the roofing panel substrate. The panel/laminate bond has been proven to withstand winds of 160 mph. The flexibility and durability of the Insul-Solar laminate make it ideal for metal roofs where expansion and contraction are considerations. Unlike polycrystalline photocells that are heavy and fragile, no roof penetration and no additional structural support are required.

The CFR Insul-Solar system includes integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), all schematics and specifications for all electrical components, 20-year warranty and 10-year payback or less in some states. The system is available in panel module widths of 36” and 42”, panel thicknesses ranging from 2” to 6” and panel lengths from 8’ to 53’.

RoofScreen Manufacturing

RoofScreen Mfg. produces modular, bolt-together rooftop framing systems with leak-proof roof connections. The high-strength structural design allows fewer frames and attachment points, making it a perfect racking solution for solar arrays. Mounting solar panels on elevated racks has many advantages. Higher density per square foot of roof area can be attained because the system can be elevated above obstructions, and efficiency of the collectors increased because the racks can be adjusted for the optimal angle.

A by-product of the placement of solar arrays above the surface of the roof is that the collectors shade the roof surface and allows air to circulate over it, thus keeping the roof surface cooler and lessening the demands on air-conditioning units for interior comfort.

The S-5-PV mounting kit is an ideal solution for mounting solar modules on standing seam metal roofs. One advantage to using the hardware is that it doesn't pierce the metal roof panels, so its use violates no provision of the roof warranty. Another compelling benefit relates to performance. Through their design, S-5-PV clamps secure the solar trays several inches above the roof surface. This results in a shaded roof surface and the creation of a plenum between the surface of the roof and underside of the PV modules. Tests have shown this mounting method can lower a roof's surface temperature by as much as 65 degrees. And a cooler roof means a more energy efficient building.

The S-5-PV kit is designed to work with machined aluminum S-5!™ Mini clamps. They'll last the life of the roof and are completely recyclable.

Sealed "N" Safe®

With its introduction of an innovative patent pending Thermal Block System, Sealed “N” Safe® has paved the way for the next generation in metal building insulation systems. The Sealed “N” Safe Thermal Block System addresses the areas of greatest energy loss in conventional metal building insulation systems—at the points where blanket insulation becomes compressed between the metal roof and wall sheets and the roof purlins and wall girts during panel attachment.

Use of the Sealed “N” Safe® Thermal Block System in combination with ordinary fiberglass blanket insulation allows the concepts of continuous insulation to be achieved with typical screw down roof and wall applications. The system has been tested and found to meet new energy code requirements and aids in achieving LEED 3.0 requirements for Optimizing Energy Performance, offering points ranging from 1 to 19.

The patented, SNS Thermal Block System has two defining components: the Thermal Block and the Fastener. The thermal block is constructed of two galvanized metal plates with specially designed polyurethane foam injected between them. The fastener creates a “stitch” type joint between the sheeting and the thermal block, creating a watertight seal and fastening the whole assembly tightly to the purlin or girt. The assembling process is very much like a typical screw down roof. The only added step is setting the thermal block in place with two-flat head screws.

This system is designed to handle the normal vertical and horizontal loads applied in a typical metal building application. It also carries a Class A fire rating.

The Eco-Blox green snow guard solution is environmentally responsible and carries the same lifetime warranty as SnoBlox-SnoJax' other polycarbonate snow retention products.

The Eco-Blox “DEUCE” can be adhesive or mechanically fastened and requires a 1.5" flat mounting area. This model will fit most popular 36" panels with three 12" flats or four 9" flats without rib straddling. The waffled base provides almost triple the bonding power of a smooth bottom guard in the same size category. Starter points are provided for mechanically fastening. The Eco-Blox is available in clear with a slightly darker UV tint. Professional ATI test results show the SnoBlox Deuce held up to 3,456 lbs. when screw mounted and 1,379 lbs. when adhesive mounted using the SB-190. All tests were performed simulating realistic snow loading conditions applied to the face of the guard. To learn more visit

Hi GepeTooRs,

Thank you very much! I enjoy this blog site so much! The staff is terrific, the writers are supportive, the articles are comprehensive and the quality is superb. It is truly a great site. While I split the profits it is well worth the partnership because the value is there for the true concern for the long term quality.

Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wished to say that I have really enjoyed surfing around your blog posts.

Ken Kline (author) from Chicago, Illinois on April 15, 2015:

Hi Johnny Shi,

I agree I thought they were exclusively for rural area and now I am seeing them used very effectively and beautifully in residential building.

I also see metal roofs being used as an accent on a roof.

I especially enjoy the faux copper and hope to have part of our home accented with this new material.

If we combine Roxul sound-proofing rock wool insulation in the roof, I believe the concern for the sound of the rain would be mitigated - just a thought.
