Why I Love to Clean

I love it

I LOVE TO CLEAN! No seriously, I do. Now ladies don't vilify me, you know some of you have the same "clean little secret." Admit it, you're out there, just too ashamed to show your face. Today, much is said about being active outside the home, well there is nothing wrong in being active inside the home. So join my club, come out of the closet and fess up.

I don't know where it came from, for as long as I can remember, cleaning has been one of my passions. In my teenage years, during summer vacations, I was sent to spend the summers with my grandmother. I could not wait to get there to clean her house, stem to stern. I was so good at it, that she'd pass me around to her friends. It was so bad or good, (however you'd like to look at it), that on any application, under hobbies, I'd list cleaning first. As a matter of fact, in my high school, Memory Book, I listed cleaning, again, first, under hobbies.

My proclivity for cleaning has extended down till now. On my visits to my mother's house, I look forward to cleaning her house, not because it's not clean, it is, but I deep clean, things like decorative figurines, pictures on the walls, etc. I have a little secret that I want to share here. When I go to someones home for a visit or get together, and I go into the bathroom or kitchen and see something out of order or maybe overlooked during preparation or cleaning, I'll take care of that for them, unknown to them. These are only houses that I'm sure the homemaker intended to take care of these things, but did not have time or forgot. I can sympathize with them, because, when I overlook or forget something and I find out after the fact that it was not done, I am upset that my guest saw it undone.

I look forward to cleaning a particularly messy house, I use to say, there was no house too messy for me, until I saw the show, "How Clean Is Your House, a BBC television show. Honestly I'd never seen animal feces indoors, until I saw that show. But I think that I could handle that, well, let me retract that, I could handle all but that. Oh, roaches are a problem too, you see the first part of my life, I never saw a roach, I had to be about eight or nine before I saw my first one. From the first day, I developed a phobia, could you call it a roach phobia? I even have to close my eyes, during a commercial about them. That's not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about my weird hobby. My favorite things to watch, are the television shows on HGTV, and others, anything to do with cleaning, redecorating, decluttering, such as "Clean House." I actually had to ween myself off these stations at one point, can you imagine, I even watched reruns, before they expanded their programming.

The effect on others

My children would hate to go shopping with me, because I would make them pick up the clothes from the floor. The discounts department stores are pretty rough on me, because I spend most of my time picking things up off the floor. My husband use to say that I worked him too hard, what he meant by that was, when I was up working, he felt guilty, so he'd get up and do something. It got to the point that when he wanted to rest, during one of my cleaning sprees, he would call me over, and ask me to just sit with him, that didn't last long, I'd jump back up after a while. His solution at times was to put one leg on my lap, then I'd get the message. Let me clarify, I no longer have the cleanest house on the block, but I still nonstop clean. However, the computer has slowed me down somewhat. Speaking of the cleanest house, I use to have that reputation, when I was young, and raising my children.

Why I Clean

I can't really explain why, I love to clean so much. For one thing I am restless, I can't sit still for long. Another thing, I just love to see a sparkling clean area. After cleaning an area, I love to stand back and admire my handiwork. Now, I know some of you ladies and a few men can identify with that. Cleaning is also cathartic. When I want to solve a particular tough problem, I find a tough job to do. Although the problem does not necessarily have to be tough, sometimes I just need to think deeply, and cleaning helps me do that. When I'm in a zone, cleaning zone that is, I'm so into it that I go to a different place, and if someone walks upon me, I'm totally unaware to the extent that I nearly jump out of my skin when I become aware of their presence. Yeah, it's that serious at times.  Cleaning is also good for mild depression, because it takes the focus off you and directs your energies elsewhere.  Say, I guess I just explained why I love to clean.  Try it, you might find that you will get the same satisfaction that I do.  It might not help, but it sure can't hurt.

Hi Jo

Hope you come back and read this. I haven't done much writing lately. At the moment I am attending the university online and don't have much time to write. However I do come over periodically and check for feedback and comments, also to check out what's new. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Freta. I'm here reading on HubPages this morning and trying to renew some old acquaintances and see who is still around writing. I have seen anything recent of yours so sought out one of your old Hubs. Boy, did I need this one. Wish I could clone you. Housecleaning is one of my least favorite things to do. I work hard around my house, but unfortunately I'm always finding things to do other than housework. I'd much rather work outside.

Hope you are still around writing. I really like your work.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 19, 2012:

Oh my, a man after my own heart. See I knew there were others like me out there, they just have to come "clean," or be outed by someone who knows them. LOL!

Thanks Tami Fite, tell your husband, fastfreta said "keep up the good work."

Tami Fite on December 19, 2012:

Very good! My husband brought his own cleaning supplies and cleaned the bathrooms at the banquet hall the day before our wedding! Nice reading about you! Bless you!

April Wier on December 13, 2012:

I did notice the name, ha ha. We're everywhere :)

April Wier on December 13, 2012:

I just watched your interview. I don't like how they are trying to make you seem crazy. There is nothing wrong with you. Cleaning is constructive, cathartic and, in my opinion, quite healthy. Who doesn't like to look at a space they've just cleaned.

I wish I was more like you. My Mom would sometimes punish me by making me clean. Still, to this day, I struggle with cleaning. But, once I get started, I love it. Great hub!

Victoria Lynne - You might want to check out, she has a free program for those of us who find cleaning overwhelming. Very gentle and easy.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 12, 2012:

A woman after my own heart, I knew there were more out there like me, it just takes a little nudging to bring you all out of hiding. LOL! Thank you Virginia for the validation, and thanks for stopping and taking the time to read and leave a comment.

Virginia Kearney from United States on December 12, 2012:

Love your Hub and your personality! I have also "cleaned up" in other people's spaces for exactly the same reason. I have 5 kids so I have a hard time keeping things as clean as I'd like but I do love to have my spaces clean and fresh too. Love to get those hidden dust bunnies out of there!

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 11, 2012:

Thanks Jamie. Actually I've done several here on HubPages. I've been encouraged to do a book and piggyback off the notoriety I'm receiving. Unfortunately all the suggestions I'm getting cost money, and I'm not there yet. So, I'm hoping real soon to take advantage of some of them.

Thank you for stopping and taking time to leave a comment.

Jamie Brock from Texas on December 11, 2012:

fastfreda- Great hub! There's nothing wrong with cleaning.. I like cleaning because of the transformation from something dirty to shiny and clean, just like you were talking about. It's kind of like an extreme makeover.... I love seeing a faucet shine after it's been dull and grungy. I just wish mine were shiny most the time rather than dull with water spots :0/ I would LOVE for you to do a "cleaning tips" hub... I bet you know lots of them!

Victoria Lynn from Arkansas, USA on December 11, 2012:

Congrats on the Today Show gig. That is awesome! And all because you love to clean! That's funny. While I don't want to be a neat freak, I do wish I weren't so messy. That impedes my efforts to clean because just looking around is overwhelming. There are so many other things I need to do or want to do. Maybe one of these days I'll get inspired! Keep cleaning!

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 10, 2012:

Thanks Nettlemere, I actually owe homage to HubPages for considering my article publish worthy, because in truth I never would have been chosen had they not published the hub.

Oh, I really loved that show, because I always wanted to see the results. But in truth I was always grossed out by the beginning of the show.

Thank you so much for reading and leaving a comment.

Nettlemere from Burnley, Lancashire, UK on December 10, 2012:

Really cool that you got on TV as a result of your cleaning passion. I chuckled when I read that you had seen the UK show "How clean is your house" - I'm the opposite of a clean freak, but that show even made me feel a bit better about my efforts!

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 09, 2012:

Thanks IzzyM for the favor. I too hope the hub gets lots of hits, that's about the only thing I really expected from all of the notoriety.

IzzyM from UK on December 09, 2012:

Just pinned and shared this hub. You're getting lots of mentions on a lot of sites, but this is the one that started it off! Hope it goes viral :)

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 05, 2012:

Thanks Michael, I just saw the segment of the Today Show, haven't seen the view yet.

Michael Willis from Arkansas on December 05, 2012:

Great article fastfreta. Congratulations on your feature on the Today show today! Wow! Also saw a clip on The View yesterday about cleaning fruit.

Thanks summerberrie, you're too kind.

Enjoyed every bit of reading this hub. I'm glad you were "discovered". You seem like such a delightful person!

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on July 19, 2012:

The only solution I can think of is to keep the house closed up and run your air conditioner, because the dust is coming from the outside. If that isn't an option I'm afraid I really don't have a solution. I thank you for your confidence in me, I hope with this answer it wasn't misplaced.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on January 24, 2012:

Laura, I'm so glad you found me. I hope you noticed some of the comments, showing that we're not alone. Keep up the good work, there's nothing wrong with being clean.

Laura on January 23, 2012:

I understand completely about loving to clean! It's what I do on my days off or when I should be napping before work (housekeeper/laundry worker). I'm pretty sure I can thank my dad for that! Turns out, if we didn't clean the house, it would be unnavigable because we have so much family living in our small house and my mom is always so tired from work, though she helps out when she can.

I honestly found your blog after searching for "women who actually love cleaning". I had to know there were others out there!

Happy cleaning! :)

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 18, 2011:

Well Ash, I'm not sure if you have OCD or not, however, you're a man after my own heart. I love to see anyone who enjoy cleaning as much as I do. All I can say is go for it, clean til your heart's content. Anyway, thanks for stopping, and taking the time to leave a comment.

Ash on December 18, 2011:

I came across this post in an attempt to find out whether there is something wrong with my love of cleaning. I am a 21 year old male who has an obsession with keeping everything absolutely clean (go figure). I can’t stand a speck of dust, a strand of hair, a blotch of gravy and pretty much anything unruly or untidy around my place. And I love surveying my good work after it's all done, shiny floors, spotless toilet, germless sink and all. I thought maybe I had OCD. But I like your explanation much, much better. It is a source of distraction, a refuge for deep thought, a solid workout, a stress-reliever and a therapy for mild depression, all at the same time. Gotta love it.

Alfreta Sailor (author) from Southern California on December 14, 2011:

They are a hoot. I'm not able to watch live television at this time, only on the computer. Are they still coming on TV? I really miss the show. Thanks 3cardmonte, for stopping and leaving a comment.

I hope to hear from you again, to see how you're doing with your, "hobby."

Great Hub! I used to be a cleaner, I was obsessive a little bit I think. Over the years I have lost the love of cleaning. You can come clean my house though if you like. I do clean just not as much as I used to. And I agree it is therapeutic.

What a delightful read. But I'm all tuckered out now just from following you and your energy around in this Hub. Although I don't mind cleaning, and at times I find it very therapeutically relaxing, I'd much prefer you to come over and take care of these things. I promise, I'll make it worth your while, because I LOVE TO COOK!

Thanks for linking to my Hub, fastfreta. I've linked from mine to yours. :)

You're on the right track, (letting some of it go) prioritizing. That's what I had to do. Since I was a night owl, I use to do most of my cleaning at night after everyone was asleep. I also taught my children to love to clean during their early years. I made it a game and they loved it then. However, now no one remembers now, LOL!

Habby from College Station, Texas on April 07, 2010:

Fastfreta, I will join you in boldly declaring that I LOVE to clean. I am a mom of three, one of whom is just three months old, and my house is almost always picked up and clean. I just can't seem to help myself. BUT I will say that I God is teaching me how to let some of it go so that I can spend time with these little ones. Any thoughts?
