How to program your garage door remote control

You should be able to program your garage door remote after reading this!

I will be talking about Liftmaster and Craftsman garage door openers. The Chamberlain Corporation makes Craftsman, Chamberlain, and Sears Craftsman garage door openers. Whether you have a chain drive, a screw drive, or, a belt drive opener, they all program the same. There is a "learn" button on the machine that holds the information from the remote control. The learn button may be located on the side of the opener but, most models have them on the rear of the machine. How you can locate the button easily is to find where all of the wires are running into the machine. The learn button is usually square, but, it can be round. The colors of the buttons can be white, yellow, green, red, or the new frequency is purple.

Look at the photo above and you can see the square (red) button located on the left side of the "Logic board". The logic board is the computer that tells the opener whatto do and when to do it. It is also usually the first thing that lightening will hit in a thunderstorm. I basically is a radio frequency receiver that picks up electrically transmitted signals. Lightening is an electrical signal, and a very powerful one. The little wire on the bottom right side of the logic board is the receivers antenna. DO NOT CUT IT OFF! I have have been to houses that the homeowners complained about the remote control only working when they get really close to the door. When you cut the wire you alter the frequency of the remote control, and have to replace the logic board. The logic board can cost anywhere from 85.00 up to 100.00 depending on your area. Oh, the prices i just quoted didn't include labor.

Now, for the programing part you have been waiting for. Hold down the square or round learn button that is on your opener for about 20 seconds. This clears any other remote controls that may have been in the machine. NOTE: If you loose your remote control, or, if you are going thru a divorce, you need the clear the opener so that unwanted people can no longer have access to your house. Another tip..... when you go to have your car serviced make sure you keep your remote control with you!

The reason i say this, is not because i am saying car dealerships or repairmen are crooks, but, there are exceptions to every rule. When you go to get your vehicle repaired you give the people your name, address, and your remote control. I know of one problem where a customer dropped off her Mercedes to be worked on and the mechanic had her address, and took her remote control, and went to her house that night and stole her car. Just stick it into your pocket until you get your car back.

Ok, once cleared, you take each remote control, and go to the back of the opener where the learn button is. Hold the remote control button down, and push and release the learn button. You should hear a click, and the lights on the machine may come on for a split second. When this happens, the remote control is programmed. Continue this process until all remotes are programmed. Note: The opener will only hold five remote controls, or, four remote controls and one keyless entry.

I hope this helped. Keep checking my hubs, my next one will deal with programing your car remote control to the opener.

Remember: Its good luck to shake hands with a sweep!

Ellen, after 5 attempts to program a remote it starts to drop the others already programmed. Hold in the smart button for about 15 seconds. This clears the board. Now push and release the smart button and the push and hold the remote. The lightbulb will flash once when accepted. Just repeat this step. Hope this helps

I have followed the rules on the motor and searched for the manual and followed the directions to the best of my abilities. The directions are greek to me so I don't know if I am doing right, can someone explain in the simplest and stupidest of terms? Which is the transmitter, and which is the receiver? Do i hold the opener button or just press it, because I've heard both answers. I am lost and confused please help ASAP.

I figured it out. To help others, this is what I did. The 315 receiver WILL accept the 371LM remote. Couldn't believe it!

Scroll to Continue

First time doing it and now have second remote. I ordered the 371LM from a website and the guy told me to pop of receiver front panel. Press the only button in front on receiver, light comes on then press 371LM remote. It was that easy. My husband couldn't believe it when he came home in the car and was able to use older 315 remote too in opening garage door. Now we have 2 working remotes for and OLDER garage door opener.

I would like to add second remote to GDO Sears #139.655. The first remote is a Sears 315. There is a 3x 3 receiver plugged into outlet. I ordered a 371LM remote and the guy online said I should pop cover off receiver box ,press small button, red light will come on , then press button on remote. So I do not have to get up on a ladder and press red square button at the motor at all? On the outside of garage a key is needed to open garage door and I want to open door with second remote from inside house. Thanks for you help.

John hold down the learn button for about 20 seconds. This clears the board. Then try to reprogram the remotes. Push and release the learn button dont hold it down when programming. If the machine will still only accept one or two you have a bad board and needs to be replaced

We have a Craftman's 315. We want to program two remotes. When one is programmed the other stops working. What can we do?

GordonHoward on February 10, 2015:

This subject may be a little old, but there is one thing I want to make sure EVERYONE understands about Craftsmen openers. BLUE button remotes will NOT work with Black button remotes machines they sell now.

Don't buy batteries, don't throw throw them on the floor. Maybe you can downgrade your new machine but why bother? Try to E-bay them. What's the the chances out of 200,000 houses, a bad guy would pick you to steal from.

And old story you might like or not be able to afford in a new car.

I bought a Jeep Wagoneer in 1983. The opener flew wherever, might have been to the 2 & 3 year old drape apes.

One brain blast later!!!

Parts needed:

10-12 feet door bell wire = maybe $1

One simple door bell round will do = maybe $1

One plastic bath soap dish you travel with in suit case = $.75

One Radio Shack "large heat dissipating style resister" = maybe $1.50 (Now make sure to ask the resister will drop 12 volts to 3.2 volts, that is the voltage of the remote batteries used in remotes. Make them check, they are going out of busiest in some states.)

Open or modify Garage Door remote. I tossed my remote case away.

I found a place behind the car grill to mount soap box.

Drill too small holes for bell wire.

Mount resistor to negative battery pole with ring terminal to battery clamp, tuck away if you wish behind or under battery. Solder other wire to resistor and run through small hole in soap box,

Solder that wire to the connector the one that touches to top or the battery.

Using the solder, solder the other wire it to the down down side of the door opening button "careful"

Run the wire through the fire wall, mount the door bell in a place easy to get to but only you know. Connect the wire through fire wall to one side of the bell. Connect another small section of wire to a good grounding spot.

Seal the soap box with silicon. Edges and small holes.

Test your secret garage door opener no one will swipe or your lose.

A universal remote can be programmed to your machine the same way . Its a little tricky but if you read the instructions it walks you thru it

Hi. Thanks for the speedy reply. No, no learn button at all. After reading through the internet ....I have come to that conclusion. I believe I have a Fixed Code Setting. It is a 1/2 HP Steelcraft Model 1160SC . Could maybe the code be under some panel I have to unscrew on the housing of the motor unit????

I have the Liftmaster 1265 security+ unit on my rental. Only 1 (of the original 2) remote works, I reset the unit and also can't program the renter's new Jeep to the working remote. Reading the many posts above implies the control board is bad, time for a new one.

But my question is the working remote previously would stop the garage door from opening/closing if I pressed the remote button again, now I have to wait for it to fully open/close before changing the direction.

Is this another symptom of a failing control board?

Yes, the hard-wired unit works normally to change direction.

I have an old Sears Craftsman 1/2 horse opener. It has a purple learn button, with a yellow light that comes on when you push the learn button. I have a gray craftsman 315 controller, with one black button. I tried to push the learn button for 20 seconds to clear, then push my black button and the learn button again. No click...and it doesn't work to control the door. Can you help me? Thanks!

Micheal if the smart button is need to use the 971,,,if its use the 81lm..a new logic board is about a remote is a cheaper fix..hope this helps..Joe

Michael on April 01, 2012:

Joe - should i return the 971LM and purchas another 81LM so they are both workning the freq? is there any smart learning remotes on the market that are universal to all modules? we are only renting the property and don't wish to spend to much in order to have two remotes, logic board sounds expensive.

- Michael

Sweeps Luck (author) from Fountain Inn on April 01, 2012:

Micheal..Yes the 971lm is for the red smart button. Im surprised the 61lm is working at all on that machine. If you have problems programming both the have a problem with the logic board.....Joe

Hi Sweeps,

We have just moved into our new house and only recieved on remote for our lift master unit. After following the steps on the net I purchased the 971LM due to the fact that I had RED programming button on the unit, in saying that the original remote was a 81LM (according to the sticker on the back) I am now having difficulties programming both remotes, I can get them to work one at a time but not together, is this a frequency issue? should I have both remotes with the same model number? I think it was strange that the 81LM was able to work with the red programming button, where the remote should be for the green button.

Hi What color is the learn button on your machine red, green or purple?

chrispy on March 25, 2012:

Hey Sweeps. I've been going crazy trying to syn my wireless keypad to my opener. I can never get the learn light to blink. My keypad# is 139.18795 and my opener is a Craftsman 139.1847D. Any ideas?? Thx

Sweeps Luck (author) from Fountain Inn on March 18, 2012:

Jason, i hate to say this but you have a bad logic board. If you replace the board you are about half of the cost of a new machine...You should just replace the unit. Sorry but oneremote is all you will get it to program..Joe

Jason on March 18, 2012:

I have tried all the tactics I could find all over online. I have 2 remotes one stopped working when I washed it. Also I have 2 brand new remotes. All are 64LM remotes. I can not get the new remotes to program at all. I did set the 9 dip switches. On my 2 existing remotes, I did get the washed one to program again. However no mater what procedure I try I can only get one remote to program to the door. I wiped the opener clean by pressing button for 6 seconds. All remotes were cleared. I then held transmitter, saw led in opener blinking, hit learn button for 1 second. That one works. When I add the second remote in the same way door open or door closed it will erase the first remote. So no mater what the only remote that works is the last one programed. I have 2 doors and it is the same on both. I am at the point of purchasing new units. These are a little older but I believe they are more current than the 1997 that everyone refers to.

Sweeps Luck (author) from Fountain Inn on January 07, 2012: sorry they wont work with each other..Both have different frequencys..if it has a red square uses a 971LM remote..the new machines have a purple square button and it uses a 371LM

Hey Joe is it possible to program old remotes to a newer opener? I tried to program without any success the weird thing is that after programming the old one, when i try to use it the light blinks as if its getting the signal but the door does not move...
