Cleaning a bedroom quickly is what I have learned to do this past week. My room was a disaster and I needed it clean fast. At first glance, cleaning a room can be very overwhelming. I have been known to walk into my room and try to clean it but not know where to begin. I know others were in the same boat as me so I'm proud to present how to clean a room quickly.
Get the Big Things Out
Before you tackle cleaning your room, get the big things out. In my room, I had a lot of movable furniture in my room. With the furniture in my room, the room looked a lot messier. Removing chairs and other big objects makes the room more approachable and gives you more space to clean.
Then, while we're on the subject of big things, look around your room. Assess the situation. What category is covering your floor most? When I say category I mean laundry, garbage, books, ect. For me, laundry had taken over my room. I removed all my dirty laundry from my room and my room already looked cleaner!
Focus on One Thing at a Time
What has really helped me clean is just focusing on one thing at a time. Before starting to clean, look around the room and take note of what it is that's making your room a mess. Most of the time for me, it's clothes everywhere. So, take the easiest thing to clean and clean it.
In my room, I remove my dirty clothes and start some laundry. After the laundry is out, I'm always surprised at how much cleaner my room looks. Then, start on garbage, recycling, and other stuff that can be removed from your room.
Downsizing Your Room
If you are like me, you have way too much stuff to fit into your room. Downsizing is a great thing to do, at least once a year, to make sure you are only housing the things you need or want to keep and getting rid of the stuff you don't need anymore.
Making four piles - 'Keep', 'Sell', 'Donate', and 'Trash' can help you figure out what you should give away. When you pick up an item that you are unsure about, ask yourself if you have used it in the last year. If not, chances are it can be either sold, donated, or trashed.
If you still haven't fixed that item that you have been meaning to fix last year, it's probably time to either fix it that week or trash it.
If you feel uncomfortable donating to Goodwill or Salvation Army, there are groups on Facebook where you can personally offer your free items. You can do porch pickups to avoid social interaction, if that's not your thing, and you can even meet somewhere else if you don't want anyone to know where you live. Facebook groups are a great way to personally help locals in your area with things they need.
You can use Facebook for selling your items as well. If you live in an apartment complex and aren't allowed to have garage sales, using Facebook groups and other apps like OfferUp are the best bet for selling.
If you have a house, and weather permits, having a garage sale is a great way to sell your stuff fast. Post an ad on Craigslist and try to hold the garage sale all weekend. It will attract more people that way.
After you have gotten the big things taken care of, grab your garbage bags. What I do after I finish getting the big things out is make piles. I know it sounds like an unneeded step but trust me, it helps. Make a spot in the room where you can make piles of things (preferrably a spot near where you're working.) Usually if I can't find a spot on the floor I use my bed. Next, sweep the room. I put all my books in one pile, all my papers in another, all my trash in the trashbags, and I keep piling up my things.
By the time you're done with this step, you should have many piles and a pretty clean floor. Now tackle your furniture. Clear off your desk and dresser, clear under the furniture, and tackle your closet.

The Wipe Down
Now that most of your stuff is in piles, wipe everything down. I usually use cleaning wipes to wipe off the dust from my furniture. I was surprised to see how much dust accumulated. Pull out your furniture from the wall if you can and sweep or vacuum under the furniture.
Putting Everything Away
Everything is wiped down and you're ready to put things away. For this step you'll need storage containers and boxes.
- Pick a pile. Any one will do, don't be scared (I know I was).
- If you know where it goes, put it away.
- If you don't want to keep it, either throw it out or put it in a box to donate.
- If it doesn't have a home, leave it on the ground.
- Rinse and repeat.
After you finish going through all the piles, all you should have left on the floor is the things that don't have homes. Either put those in a box until you have a place or just toss them. It's up to you.
Now that everything is off your floor, sweep and vacuum. Drag everything back into the room that you took out and decorate. You should feel proud that you cleaned your room (and fast). By using this technique it only took me a day to clean my room (I have a HUGE room). Good luck on your cleaning.
Tips & Tricks
- Remember, taking breaks is okay. But, taking a 30 minute break for 10 minutes of cleaning isn't going to get the job done.
- Play some upbeat music while you clean. It will keep you energized and motivated.
- If you feel brave enough, call a friend to come and help you. You'll get extra help and good company.
- If you are cleaning your room for a purpose, keep that in mind when you want to quit.
