Materials & Tools

Before we undertake the project of building some brick steps for your home there are some basic tools and materials we will need to gather.

1. Bricks and mortar

2. Cement mix

3. Shovel

4. Several 2x4’s

5. Tape measure

6. Saw

7. Hammer

8. Nails, Bolts, & screws

STEPS IN CREATING BRICK STEPS

If you are reading this you have already picked out a location to place your steps. You want to make sure it is clear of any debris. Since you will be placing cement mixture on this location you want to make sure it is as flat and level as possible. Using the 2x4’s you have and tape measure out a square box that will fit in the location and form it out using the boards. Use the saw to cut the boards to the length that you measured. Also remember to create the square the same size as the footsteps that you want to measure.

The previous first step will allow you to set up the framework that you will need so make sure all your measurements are correct. Also that it is placed in the correct location once the concrete starts to settle it will be hard to move them again. Mix your cement a little at a time or as needed. Carefully place it within the square and use the rowel to even out the surface. Make sure there are no bumps or air holes in the cement. Allow the base of this to harden for about 254 hours prior to continuing.

After your base has set for some time measure the distance from the top of the porch or patio to the base that you created. Then check the height of the brick and it will help you determine how many actual footsteps you are going to create n the stairs. Start at the base and place about a 1 inch mortar mixture on the cement placement you have created. Place the bricks on the mortar mixture about ½ inch apart.

As you have been laying the bricks make sure they are level every other brick or so. After you have completed the first line of bricks use the trowel and scoop up some additional mixture. Use it to fill in the 1 ½ inch gaps that you have made in-between the bricks. Place the second layer of bricks on top of the first and keep doing this as you lay your bricks. Then of course rinse and Repeat. The bricks as you will find will form the steps as they go and it will fall into place.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Some additional very important tips is as you continue to always check and recheck your measurements. Makes sure that you have the correct measurements, so they fall in to place correctly or the whole brick staircase that you just made could collapse. Use protective gloves when handling your bricks to prevent and cuts or scratches. It’s always a good idea to check that you are not working outside too long when it is extremely hot thus preventing heat stroke so plan your building time around your day and drink plenty of fluids. Following some of these tips will help you create a more enjoyable time creating your stairs. Most of all have fun!
