Home Is Where the Heart Is and so Much More Now

A house made of brick and mortar is not a home in the real sense. A home is a place where we feel safe and loved, where we love to come back

Home is Where the Heart is

“Home is Where the Heart is” Gaius Plinius Secundus said this some two thousand years ago. Who would have thought this phrase would be of so much importance today. What with the pandemic, lockdowns, and social distancing, we have learnt the importance of our home. We have realized that the safest place to be is our home. We have also been forced to reflect on ways and means to turn our home into an office, school, a gym, entertainment place, meditation space, and so much more as and when required.

Love your Home

Love your Home

How would you describe your home?

Normally we would say a home is a place we come to, after a hard day’s work and find peace and solace with our loved ones. So, a home is a place where you are happy to be anytime, to which you feel emotionally connected to, have good memories of, where you bond with family and loved ones, where you can be yourself without the fear of being judged, and where you are safe and healthy.

And Now it is Much More than Just a Sweet Home

With the pandemic induced lockdown, and families spending more time at home we devised ways to convert living rooms into workspaces, the dining table got transformed into the home office, balconies into meditation spaces, guest rooms into homeschooling spaces. We devised various schemes to make our home space multifunctional. People started envisaging bigger homes with fully equipped home office, a home library, a well-designed kitchen. Covid 19 reaffirmed that the safest place to be is one’s home. Here are some tips to design your home to cater to the needs of all by making a few small changes.

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

— William Morris

Declutter and Simplify for a New Look

Decluttering and simplifying gives the home a fresh and new look. By giving away unused clothes, and other household items we not only clear space but can organize things better. This reduces anxiety and stress as it is easier to find things. Decluttering regularly is a good practice. Keeping only the essentials simplifies life and makes it so much easier. Add more indoor plants in the living room. Many indoor plants give a lot of oxygen and help purify the air. A clean and cheerful home helps us stay healthy and productive. Minimalistic furniture, beautifully colored walls, a few antique pieces add aesthetic value to the home. Simplifying the home leads to less stress, less cleaning, more space, more fun.

Comfortable Work Space

As we spend most of the day at our work station, we need to choose a comfortable space with adequate light, ventilation, and privacy. Couches and dining tables are not conducive to productivity in the long run. An ergonomic desk and chair, good internet connection, and computer or laptop, telephone, stationery, and other equipment that support our work are the essentials here. An area near the balcony would be an ideal place to set up a work station because when you get tired looking at the screen, you can take a short break to relax on the balcony and enjoy the view. By designing a good workspace, work from home can be enjoyable and enhance your productivity. A dedicated space free from disturbances to help focus on the work is very important. As sitting for long hours can result in back and neck pain, many have started opting for a standing workstation as an option.

Smart Kitchen

Smart Kitchen

Convenient Functional Kitchen

Good storage space, proper ventilation, lighting in the kitchen are absolutely essential for a good home. Kitchen activity is a routine chore and needs to be planned a day before so that it does not interfere with the office schedule and children’s schoolwork the next day. People have realized that home cooking is the best option to stay healthy. The kitchen is no longer a neglected corner of the house and needs to be well-stocked and modified to fulfill the hunger pangs of the family. Many modern gadgets like fryers, microwave, juicers, blenders, toasters, cookers, vegetable cutters, grinders, etc., have made cooking a lot easier today. A smart kitchen equipped with these new-age kitchen gadgets can make cooking so much fun.

Home Gym

  • More and more people are investing in home gym equipment as outdoor activity is restricted due to the pandemic. Exercise is vital to build immunity and for a healthy life. A comfortable home gym with the right equipment can motivate you to work out regularly and keep fit. It is also so much easier to follow a routine from the comfort of your home.
  • Choose a cozy space with ample light and air and paint the walls with vibrant colors that inspire you to work out, add mirrors that help in reflecting light and expanding the view and also ensure that you are doing it the right way. You can convert the balcony, terrace, or any corner of your home as your dedicated gym space.
  • Include dumbbells, a stationary bicycle, Treadmill, A punching bag, skipping rope, wrist and ankle weights, A pull up frame and bar, Foam roller, A yoga mat, rings.
  • A music system and a flat-screen to watch workout videos would be an added advantage.

A few minutes of workout every day within the comfort of your home can go a long way in building your strength and stamina to fight any virus or infection

Study Zone and Library

Create a study zone for the children complete with a study table, comfortable chair, internet connection, required stationery, good lighting, and ventilation are important now as online classes and home study continues. Noise cancellation headphones during online classes help to concentrate on the learning. A neat orderly space free of clutter, disturbances helps in uninterrupted learning. Motivational quotes add inspiration to learn and can be hung on walls in this area. A bookshelf to hold the reference books would help keep the space neat and give access when needed during the study. The children should be allowed to use their imagination to decorate their study spaces, be it with fairy lights or cool study lamps, flower vases, small potted plants, and art pieces that make studying at home a blissful experience for the children. A mini-library with your favorite books can add a touch of class to the space.

Fun Time is TV Time

Fun Time is TV Time

Fun and Entertainment Zone

Creating a space for family time together is important. As each member is busy with their own work or studies, there is hardly any time for communication. Some time spent together, even if it is just to watch a movie or serial together is known to boost mood and relieve stress and anxiety. A particular space like the living room or drawing room with TV and home theatre can serve as the entertainment zone for the family. Soft lights, relaxing comfortable furniture, simple elegant décor all add to the ambience and help soothe the nerves after a hard day working or studying. Small plants at the corners of the room can add freshness to the atmosphere. The basement can be converted to a sports area by adding a snooker, table tennis, or poker table to engage in some sporting activity during the spare time as playtime is important for children as well as adults to keep mentally and physically fit.

Yoga Meditation and Relaxation spaces

A quiet portion of the house can be utilized as a yoga and meditation space. This space should preferably be near a window so you can feel and breeze and sunlight on you. All you need is a yoga mat, straps, blocks, blankets, meditation cushions, and maybe a chair for some support. Aroma candles, incense, or some calming scents set the mood for relaxation and meditation. Pastel hues for the walls like beige, light brown, light orange, grey, can be calming and inviting. It is a space to unwind and find peace, so ensure that it is clean and clutter-free. Lighting is very important as it affects our mood. Soft lights always help in relaxation. Natural light is the best. Choosing spaces that face the sun gives the advantage of the gentle light of dawn and dusk. Soothing music can help soothe the nerves and concentrate while meditating. Simplicity is the key to a great relaxation experience. Adding a few plants can enhance the natural element in the space apart from providing pure air.

Final Thoughts

A home that used to be a retreat, a safe haven for us to come to, now functions as a workspace, school, gym, playground, entertainment center. With limited space available and multiple purposes, we have to work on optimizing the available space. We are redecorating and rediscovering every part of our home to turn into something functional, and at the same time, something so aesthetically beautiful that every experience whether it is office work or learning, fitness or entertainment, is worth looking forward to.

Even the verandahs, balconies the and terraces have been used to serve some purpose or the other. And through it all, if it is anything that has held everything together and helped us to tide over the crisis and stay productive and sane, it is the love, warmth of our family and being with our loved ones at a safe place we call a home.

Hi Flourish, thanks for the visit and the nice comments. Decluttering is much needed now, what with the space crunch due to all family members working from home. Donating is a very noble thing to do during these trying times. It is very nice that you have so many home projects that you are working on. Enhancing the home environment is a big job in itself.

Lately, I have been decluttering and donating what I don't need as my kitchen is updated. Being at home all of the time is normal for me because I am retired. However, now that I have others at home with me for a change, I pay more attention to the type of home environment I want to create. There are so many home projects that I've tackled or added to the list.

Thank you so much for the visit and the kind comments. I agree with you, a lot of unnecessary stuff gets stacked up and we try to postpone clearing it as much as possible. But I realised declutter sure helps a lot. Giving to charity is a very good thing. It's a great decision you have made Ann.

Wonderful article, Vidya, on transforming our homes to places that we really enjoy spending much time in, creating spaces that are conducive to working from home, to learning, and providing for leisure activities and physical exercise. I think all of us can do with less clutter in our homes and it will, as you say, create more room, and nicer living quarters that give us an incentive to be more productive with our lives as well. Thanks for sharing!

Ann Carr from SW England on December 21, 2020:

Good suggestions here. Decluttering and good organisation are two things I've been working on lately as we have just reached the end of renovating our bungalow. I've realised how much unnecessary stuff there is! Lots go to the charity shops too, ot to my daughter's car boot sales.
