Old world kitchens offer a classic design that will withstand the many deviations of the style changers. For you see, the kitchen cabinet makers and the interior designers want a design that will need to be changed out after15 years. A return to the classic or the Victorian design has emerged. This design trend is helpful for homeowners seeking long term value and quality.

New Furniture Quality Options - Drawers Above the Counter

Take a look at the many new options. From the drawers above the counter to classic knobs to the furniture quality molding.

Furniture Quality Molding

The molding accents are expensive. But remember this is a long term investment in your home. If you are planning on staying a while do your homework, carefully consider the options and then take step back and imagine how you will feel 15 years later. Imagine the cabinets with age. Quality will show even 15 years later. Do look for high quality knobs for both your décor and long term function.

Kitchen Mechanics are Critical

The critical item is the mechanics of the drawers. Soft close doors are now available. Also, look for space saving cabinets. Home Depot carries a wide selection of choices from designers such as Thomasville to the inventive manufacturer who promises 30 percent more storage.

If your home is small, if your home is vintage, or if you are just in need of space, take care to retain a kitchen designer who has experience.

One of the new features is the spice cabinet now available in a pull out.

A Drawer for the Microwave

Another great new feature is under the cabinet microwaves. They remain a little overpriced at the moment, you might wish to design your space for the future and install a cabinet specifically sized for the microwave drawer. I simply refuse to over pay for new technology so planning ahead for the future, I find frugal.

Shop and Be Wary of Trends

Number one rule for a new kitchen, shop around. Compare the options and the many prices. The choices are almost endless.

Do be wary of the trending styles, do look for a classic design that will add both function and value to your home.

Double Chandeliers in the Kitchen

Double chandeliers offer added lighted and overhead design.

Furniture Quality Kitchen Cabinets

Furniture quality details bring in the Old World charm. The added molding with the turned legs, the added crown molding and the added textures and fluting take the cabinets from basic up to furniture quality.

Glass Cabinet Doors

Glass cabinet doors and chandeliers offer a return to the Old World but with modern comforts.

The glass doors are especially elegant with the cabinet lights.

Slotted Plate Holder

The other feature that works well with the Old World style is the slotted plate holders. This looks great and is very convenient.

Wood Covered Appliances

Wood Covered Appliances

Wood covered refrigerator doors take the kitchen to a new level. If done properly, the refrigerator will seamlessly blend into the cabinets. The trend today is to have freezer on the bottom. This is simply personal preference of how you prefer to access the freezer. I agree with the ergonomics, I only want to bend over for ice cream not for my the produce or milk products.

Granite and Marble Counter Tops

Granite and marble are main stays and remain loved by all. In the Old World design the granite and marble work very effectively.

Backsplash Adds Style

Tile back splash can add allot of punch for the dollar investment. Do consider installing basic tile diagonally accented by interim pieces to add a customized look.

Cornelia,

Yes, the old world kitchen designs are exquisite. Yet the real charm is this design is timeless. So many new trends are simply trendy so it is comforting to know traditional kitchens will last the test of time.

Hi Hibiki,

I completely agree with you on the open shelves - can a real human live that way?! Life just has too many intrusions and stuff so the opaque doors are the only logical cabinet door for me.

As for the dark cabinets verses white. We generally do not cook that often so keeping the white cabinets clean is no problem in our household. With children and pets in the household, I can see where white would become problematic.

I love light - sun light is the very best. The only way I could handle dark cabinets is with plenty of light. Thankfully the recessed lighting is in and not very expensive.

Speaking of recessed lighting, my wife and I are remodeling (she says it is rehabbing since the process is so slow and tedious and our 1929 home is so needy) and we are adding in recessed lights on all three floors. From basement to first floor great room to the hallway on the second floor. I am so enamored with the lighting that I am retaining the electrician for the bedrooms too. Oh, yes, if this seems to be the beginning of another hub, you are absolutely correct! Yes! With photos too - I promise!

In both the white and black kitchen pics, the best ones have a bacalne of light/dark. I personally lean to dark cabinetry, with lighter walls and lots of natural light (similar to your fave above). This is the easiest to keep looking clean! Also, even though open shelving looks great in magazines, I wouldn't want it in my own space, because it can look too cluttered with all the dishes showing stacked up. What do you think?By the way, nice seeing you and Ryan today!!

Yes, I do too! I dream of an ancient kitchen - funny, how we desire to return to our roots.

RTalloni,

This is the type of kitchen we wish to install in our home. In HubPages terms, an "evergreen" or timeless kitchen.

I wish interior designers would tune into "evergreen" or heirloom designs - designs that are not trendy.

I had a long conversations with a major carpet retailer who opened a granite/marble counter top business and the granite is here to stay because of its durability. I was surprised. I thought perhaps granite might be a trend but it adds an evergreen element that will not go away. I think this is a major boost for homeowners as then later on they can invest in other items such as home gyms, custom draperies, work shops, plate rails, crown molding.

The home improvement items that have lasting value really appeal to me (and hopefully to my checkbook down the road).

The features of this kitchen style bring family and friends together in comfortable spaces. Lovely examples you share here!

Rae Saylor,

Thank you so much for your praise. Greatly appreciate it. Home important is a passion of mine and the old world is a style that is often forgotten but it shouldn't be because it is timeless. Designers always want to sell what is new but the tried and true often is the best investment in the long run.

Great hub! Thanks for compiling all those beautiful photos :)
