Home Decorating on a Budget: DIY Headboard Ideas

I thought it was time to share some more frugal home décor ideas. Are you getting tired of your old headboard? Maybe you are looking to get a new one that doesn't cost a fortune. Have you thought about making your own headboard? If so, you have come to the right place. The headboard is one of the main focal points in a bedroom so you want to be sure to have one that fits your style. As I scanned the internet, I found lots of great DIY headboard ideas I want to share with you. You may be surprised at some of the common everyday materials that are used. The best part about these DIY headboards is they are easy to make and will not cost you a fortune. Many of them are made of things that are easily attainable and inexpensive to buy, especially from flea markets, thrift stores and places like that. Below are 15 unique ideas for that perfect DIY headboard.

Decorative Wallpaper Headboard

Decorative Wallpaper Headboard

Look at this DIY headboard found at House 2 Home. Can you believe it's just wallpaper? Yes, that's right! They do not have a how to but it's pretty easy to figure it out. Just get some wallpaper, cut it into the shape you would like it to be and paste it right behind your bed where the headboard should be. How cute is this? With all the different colors of wall paper out there, you can come up with a million different looks.

Painted Birds Headboard

Painted Birds Headboard

I LOVE this headboard. They didn't provide the how to but it looks to be made with 4 pieces of wood that has been painted to look weathered and then hand painted the leaves, branches and little birdies. The artwork was inspired by some baby shower invitations at Tiny Prints online. Check out the Tiny Prints blog for this headboard plus lots of other cute crafts.

Window Shutters Headboard

Window Shutters Headboard

At Curbly I found this darling headboard made from old shutters. How many times have you driven down the road and found some laying by a garbage can to be taken to the dump. Old shutters can really add some character to your room. They can be made to look very rustic or you could clean them up and paint them to look more contemporary. I love this idea.

Metal Divider Headboard

Metal Divider Headboard

I've always loved the look of wrought iron. Have a look at this creative headboard at DIYlife. It is made from a metal room divider. I love the design! Who would have thought about making a headboard out of room divider. That just opens up a whole new world of options. Find used room dividers at thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, etc.

Framed Fabric Headboard

Framed Fabric Headboard

This one at Potential Treasures is made with framed fabric. Just get some frames that are all the same size, get some fabrics in your color/colors of choice, cut them to fit the frames and then frame them up. You could experiment with different sized frames and how you group them together. I think this is fantastic. Of course, if you do not want to frame fabrics, you could frame photos or even scrapbook paper.

Corrugated Sheet Metal Headboard

Corrugated Sheet Metal Headboard

What do you think about this DIY metal headboard found at Apartment Therapy. I think it is a really clever idea and I really love the way it came out. I don't know if it's more of an industrial look, country style or in between but I sure do like it. It is made from corrugated sheet metal which you can find at Lowe's, Home Depot or any store like that. Once you have the metal, cut it into the shape you want and you have a nice, unique headboard!

Headboard of Plates

Headboard of Plates

Plates, plates and more plates. Did you know plates can be used for more than just dinner? This idea was found at The Urban Un-MARTHA. These plates grouped up together help create the illusion of a headboard. The best part is that you can buy plates in all sizes and colors at many places for cheap. The first place that comes to my mind is Goodwill. I've never been in a Goodwill store that didn't have a nice selection of colorful, unique plates. Don't forget thrift stores and garage sales. Just make sure you fasten them firmly to the wall with plate hangers.

Fence Panel Headboard

Fence Panel Headboard

For years I've been wanting to make a headboard out of a picket fence panel like the one here found at Magnet Street. You could leave the panel natural like this one or you could paint it your color of choice. What do you think? Isn't this clever? This is very simple and easy to do but even better, you will have a beautiful headboard at a fraction of the price of a new one.

Room Divider Headboard

Room Divider Headboard

Another DIY headboard made from a room divider. Go to Design Sponge to see the before and after pics. It started out white and ended up this pretty greenish-blue color. As I was looking at it I thought it would have been very pretty painted a fresh coat of white to use with coastal themed decor.

Adhesive Vinyl Headboard

Adhesive Vinyl Headboard

I found this beautiful DIY headboard at Express Yourself. Guess what it's made from? Vinyl! She used her cutting machine and sticky backed vinyl to make this gorgeous headboard. If you have a cutting machine and some Vinyl (or even contact paper) you could cut this out yourself and stick it to your wall and have an instant headboard. The vinyl comes in many colors. Don't have a cutting machine? Google vinyl wall art headboards. Many vinyl wall art stores carry these just for the purpose of being used as a headboard. There is many different designs, shapes and colors. They vary in price but can't possibly be as much as a new headboard. I noticed they had some super cute ones for a little girls room.

Wooden Cutout Headboard

Wooden Cutout Headboard

Colorful Creative Ideas has this pretty black headboard made from wood. She said she made it from PDF board which I'm thinking may be the same as plywood. If not, you could use plywood to do this. Plywood is very inexpensive. Go and read her instructions on how she did it! If you have a saw to cut the wood, this one would be simple to do. Also, this one would be a nice choice for a little boy or girls room depending on the shape you decide on and the paint color.

Framed Photos Headboard

Framed Photos Headboard

Shelterness has tons of DIY headboard ideas. I love this one made with framed pictures. It is simple and would take no time to do. Just frame photos or artwork, line up in rows and wallah! You have a headboard.

Scrapbook Page Headboard

Scrapbook Page Headboard

I love this one found at Dollar Store Crafts! Guess what this is made from? 12-- 12 x12 pieces of Scrapbook paper mounted on linoleum tiles. Isn't that clever? Total cost was 9.36. Go to the link and look at the directions under the photo. She tells you exactly how she did it.

Picture Frames Collage Headboard

Picture Frames Collage Headboard

At Becoming Whitney I found this headboard made from empty frames grouped together. Now, you probably don't have the white backdrop like shown in the picture but you could just do this grouping right on the wall above your bed. This one is all different colors but you could do one with just one or two colors or whatever you like. Frames are another easy find at flea markets, thrift stores, etc.

Old Window Panes Headboard

Old Window Panes Headboard

How about these lovely old window panes used as a headboard at Tatertots and Jello. It looks like they have taken either wall paper or fabric and put it in the window area. It has that rustic look. It would be fun to experiment with different colors and prints on this one.

I hope you have enjoyed these DIY headboard ideas. Be sure to look around all of the sites I shared. Many of them have multiple photos of unique, handmade headboard ideas. You can experiment with different things around the house to come up with a whole new look. Hopefully some of these have helped spark your imagination. Whatever you decide to do, remember to have fun and don't be scared to try new things. The sky is the limit! Do you have any DIY headboard ideas? Please share in the comment section..I would love to hear about it.

Thank you for reading and happy headboard making :0)

madeline71177-- The first thing I thought of was this --"Anchor Wire 18-in Hangman Picture Hanging System" You can type that in your local home improvement store website to see what I'm talking about. It's a type of hanger that can hold up to 200 lbs. It's for heavy wall hangings and mirrors, but I don't see why you couldn't use it to anchor your headboard to the wall. Some even use it to mount their flat screen TV's to the wall. You could connect it to the wall and then on the back of your headboard and then just hook it in place...and the headboard will stay connected to the wall. That is my best suggestion.. hope this helps! Thank you for stopping by :)

Hi Jamie,

I too repurposed my room divider as a headboard. It looks great! It is very tall though; my husband is worried that one night it might topple over on top of me while I am sleeping! The headboard is like a large piece of wood, upholstered with fabric so it is very thick and heavy. When I push the bed against it, it is "relatively" stable--but I would love any ideas you have for how to adhere it to the wall??? I am not sure what to do...because of how thick and heavy it is. Any thoughts? Thanks for your blog!!!!

Heather Jacobs - I love the window one, too! If there is a more modern version of this type of window pane, I bet it would even look nice. Thank you for stopping by!
