Which Bean Bag to Buy
There are several things to consider when purchasing a bean bag that will make life more comfortable and with no issues. We had purchased our bean bag during a stay in the hospital with our son. One of the medications changed the structure of his feet and he was not able to walk, we thought it would be nice to add a bean bag for him. We also wanted it large enough that my wife or I could sit or lay on it with him. There were definitely several other things that I wish I was aware of as well as wish I had considered. There is a link included to the bean bag we purchased, we are very happy with it and so are the kids and their friends as well.
Size Does Matter
When buying ours, I was only thinking about fitting an adult and an eleven-year-old. I hadn't even thought about how large it should be to fit a room. To make matters worst, we had moved my son's bed downstairs to the playroom to avoid carrying him up and down the stairs. This took up even more room. We purchased a five-foot bean bag figuring that this would be fine for us, and this is the only issue that I have. For the situation we were concerned with, it was great. But for the situation of now, it is large. The image at the beginning is of one side of the playroom, this is how large a five-foot bean bag is.
Make sure that you take the time to look at where this bean bag will be stored while not in use. The nice thing about a bean bag is that it can be moved easily. We can put it on our deck, it often gets moved into the living room for the kids to watch movies. Multiple cousins all crash on it to watch movies, usually until some of the nephews get too wild and the girls get annoyed with them. Then it becomes a crash pad but has held up amazingly well - no issues with a lot of rough treatment.
Sometimes we find the kids laying in the bean bag, watching the bubble tube, and relaxing. So even though the size is larger than I want now, it still works out good and there is some sibling bonding.
Don't make my mistake and purchase any old bean bag, think it through. If you don't, you may have something like this hanging around in the back of your head and then you need to find the positive about it. When we got home, I did sleep on this bean bag every night for two weeks before we moved his bed back to his room. Even at my age, I did not wake up sore and stiff. I was surprised with how much support it gave me and it was comfortable.
We Bought This Bean Bag
Bean Bag Filler
I will admit my ignorance at this point, I had not put too much thought into the filler material or beads. Luckily, I decided to try something other than the normal or old bean bag beads. I remember friends making comments about needing to buy bean bag beads because their bean bags were getting low or losing their bulkiness. This was one of the things that sold me on this bean bag.
This is a very nice feature as well. When I want to change the shape or re-fluff the bean back, I simply grab one side and turn it, the filling expands fully back to the original size. Be aware that there are different materials, and that the expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads are of lower quality and you will need to purchase beads sooner or later simply to keep the bean bag from being a flop. The foam that is used for this bean bag is soft and comfortable. EPS is the same stuff that Styrofoam cups are made of.
Bean Bag Maintenence
Bean bags that have EPS beads will need to be filled periodically. One friend told me about once a year if the bean bag is used regularly. A small bean bag is four cubic feet and a large one is usually around ten cubic feet. If you were going to buy a bean bag that is made from EPS beads, at the time of writing this it would cost about $40.00 to refill a small bean bag. Four cubic feet is about 113 liters, just some extra information.
Another option, if you have a bean bag already, is to purchase foam filler and replace your beads with foam. A foam filler would be about $60.00 to fill a small bean bag or the "regular" size bean bag. Hopefully, you are thinking this out and have not purchased it yet, then you can simply buy a bean bag that has what you want.
One of the selling points for us on this specific bean bag was that it had a machine washable cover. We have already had to wash it a couple of times, but our son does chew on it sometimes. It fits in our washer and dryer, although it is the only thing that I wash when it gets washed.
The cover is comfortable and soft, but it is very durable as well. We drag it from room to room as well as around a wooden deck. It has held up wonderfully and we have not had any issues with it.
The Best Bean Bag Cover
Honestly, this is one of those questions that the answer is different for each household. If you want something inexpensive, you will probably be getting a canvas cover bean bag that is not removable or easy to wash.
There are a ton of options out there, from canvas to leather. Just realize what will work for you. I like the look of the leather bean bags and bean bag chairs, but I wouldn't like the heat and stickiness if I was sweating from said heat.
The microsuede cover on ours is thick, durable, washable, and has worked out extremely well for us. We have had four teenagers jumping onto it at the same time and nothing has ripped or broken. I have slept on it for a couple of weeks and it has remained comfortable. We have needed to wash it, and it is easily removed, washed, dried, and put back on. I do this easily by myself.
The Cost of a Bean Bag
There are plenty of bean bags out there, cheap all the way to too expensive. There is not much to talk about here, you should purchase what you can afford without hurting your family or your finances.
A cheap bean bag, you will generally have to refill and the cover will be cheap and may not be washable. There are leather bean bag out there that are high quality, remember to know the filling, but that may not work for you if you want a machine washable cover. This is where thinking of what you want, for what, and how you may need to take care of it comes in handy.
If you do not want to spend money or it may hurt you financially to purchase one and you still want one. Ask around on Facebook to friends, craigslist, etc. One interesting this is that charities do not appear to accept bean bags. I found that Goodwill lists bean bags as a will not take accept list. In other words, if people want to get rid of a bean bag, it may help them if you are willing to take it.
Shipping and Preparing
When we purchased our bean bag, the shipping was free and is still free at the time of writing this. What surprised me was when it arrived it came in a box that had two-foot dimensions. When I opened the box, there was a large bag vacuum-sealed inside. This was the whole bean bag. I was impressed, it was compressed and pretty hard.
The foam bags are not the lightest, so this box was heavy to move. If I remember correctly it took about a day for the bean bag to expand to its full size after unboxing it. This is something that I didn't even think about. So if this is a gift or something that you want to present to someone, I wanted to make you aware of this.
I hope whatever you decide on, you enjoy it and have some fun. We all need to relax and be as comfortable as possible from time to time. Until next time, have some fun and be happy.
