As a former certified fitness instructor, I am passionate about sharing and encouraging health. I am not a medical professional.
Some people have dream cars, some dream of exotic vacations and for me, a beautiful swimming pool. The only difference for me is I don't want just a pool, I want all the amenities that surround the beautiful waters. I dream of the greenery that is natural and yet provides privacy with the feeling of a high end private resort.
So what features would I include in my "dream" resort-like pool? Beauty, low maintenance and all natural materials. Maintenance and safety would be paramount. Thinking of building a pool and need some insights into what would be on your priority list? Then you have come to the right spot. Enjoy these great topics:
- maintenance musts
- natural materials
- safety items
- privacy walls
- foundation plants
- and much more!
All the maintenance of every possible convenience from the automatic pool cover to the automatic pool cleaner to the safety items of the alarms for children and trespassing.
Next on my list after the essentials would be a pool deck from Mother Nature. I don't want a deck that showcases the industrial strength of concrete. I want the pool deck to be slip resistant for safety (see safety is always first in my thoughts before the aesthetics - we will address that item in more detail later) and characteristic of stone from millions of years ago as only natural stone can provide.
Next I dream of a wading area for children and a fountain just to be frivolous. There is nothing more beautiful than dancing water kissing the sun light and dispelling the water's magic throughout the air.
No water slide or diving board for this gal's dream pool.
So what might this dream pool really look like? Large, small or exactly what? Oh, here a photo is worth a million words. All the items I described are coincidentally right in the photo above. What is missing - only the water fountain and me and the grandchildren!
No grass by the side of the pool deck.
No medicinal silver railing for entry.
The zero entrance to the pool must be inviting and fun for adults and children alike.
Next would be a water fall, followed by lights and music.
And finally I would want an ozone purifier so while I am exercising or sun bathing or simply sipping my coffee poolside I can replenish and refresh my lungs.
Fountain Fun for the Swimming Pool
Fountains are always decorative but think about a fountain that also serves as a fun and memorable experience for your swimmers with special emphasis upon children.
The photo of the four children sitting under the spray fountain is an item for memories for many years to come. Imagine this lit at night and the special glimmer this accent will lend to your swimming pool.
Yes, it costs a little bit more but remember it is more costly to add after the fact. For perhaps less than the cost of a small flat screen you will have built in daytime fun and added glamour for the evening.

#2 Decorative Gate
Gates for Your Swimming Pool Are Mandatory but Can Be Beautiful
Gates for your swimming pool obviously are mandatory. It is typically covered in your building regulations for safety. Yet a gate can be an item of beauty. Your swimming pool is a long term investment and likewise you should look at both the security of your gate and its corresponding lock but also look as it as a decorative element for your back yard pleasure.
Contemporary or Traditional Gate Options
Whether your home décor is contemporary or traditional, there are many outstanding choices now available in the market place.
Security Number One
Whatever your choices, remember the number one element for all swimming fun is the foundation set with security. Security for your family and for potential intruders. Sadly we must make provisions to lock others out. Children look for an opportunity for mischief, we as responsible adults must ensure our home and our swimming pool is both child proof and intruder proof to a reasonable standard.
Pool Alarms - Electronic Monitory System
If you have children, if you have friends with children, if you have grandchildren - see where I am heading with this line of questioning? Each and every one of us has the exposure of "children". One of the greatest inventions made for the swimming pool is the pool alarm.
Take the time and study this option. It is much more than an added expense, it is an added peace of mind. A pool alarm will notify you if the pool were disturbed.
Here's a summary of the benefits: "Our Pool Protector alarm (not to be confused with the brand PoolGuard™) is an electronic monitoring system that automatically sounds a 100 decibel alarm when children or pets fall into your unsupervised swimming pool. "
The pool alarm will "attach to the side of a pool, and will sound an alarm if anyone should enter the pool before disabling such an alarm. This can instantly alert you to any children or others who have found their way into the pool, and give you enough time to get them out without serious harm. These pool alarms are helpful for families with young children or those in neighborhoods with young children who may not know better than to jump into a neighbor’s unattended pool."

Other Swimming Pool Amenities and Delights
Once you have the fundamentals of the design complete, I challenge you to consider these additional options:
- putting green
- covered seating area
- decorative outdoor shower
Why a putting green next to a swimming pool you might ask? Combining two great sports together all under the sun adds to the delight of your friends and family. Those visitors not wishing to join in the fun water sports surely will pick up the challenge that your putting green will provide.
All families need a covered seating area for relaxation and conversation. Sunshine is wonderful but even better is a shaded structure for temporary relief from the intense sun.
#7 Decorative Outdoor Showers for Swimmers
Great Amenities for the Swimming Pool - Outdoor Shower
An outdoor shower is often a simple item that will pay dividends over and over again in keeping the oils down in your swimming pool. So consider making that shower a piece of art and adding in a cascading shower and distinctive blue glass tile. Form can readily follow function and in this example, we can readily see the artistic version of the functional outdoor shower.
