Introduction

There can be no doubt that epoxy resin is an incredibly adaptable product. Each type of epoxy resin is categorized based on its various attributes like cure time, gel time, load time, and chemical resistance. Usually, resins are sticky and gelatinous that change into a hard polymer-like substance after the curing process.

Nevertheless, different kinds of epoxy resins are used for different kinds of purposes. Resin is a natural product but there are other products of resin that are being manufactured synthetically. Some of the synthetically made resins like epoxy resin behave just like natural plant resin but most of them are very different.

Pure Epoxy

This kind of epoxy is pure resin as well as a hardener. It has a slower curation process than the other products of epoxy resin. As it is natural, it guarantees high performance, tenacity, low rate of shrinkage, and strong adhesion quality. This type of resin is used in industries like electronics, automobile repairing, fiber reinforcements, and construction.

However, there are some limitations of this type of resins which can be overcome by modification and incorporation by adding composites and additives. They can also be remedied through industrial applications. Nowadays, the products of synthetic epoxy resin are widely used in the manipulation of natural fiber-enforced composites. This process is essential to make the resin more durable with superior electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. The ways and methods of the application of natural epoxy determined by the time taken in the procession of the product.

Polyester Epoxy Resins

Polyester resin is a type of synthetic resin which is created by the reaction between polyhydric alcohols and dibasic organic acids. Both saturated and unsaturated polyester resins are utilized as compounds for sheet and bulk molding. They are also mostly used as the toner of laser printers.

Besides, the fiberglass-reinforced resin also known as fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), is used in places like restrooms, kitchens, and restaurants that require low-maintenance walls. This kind of synthetic resin was very popular in the textile industry in the 1940s. It is still used in the same industry as it is combined with cotton to make it stronger and more unshrinkable. It is also used in fabrics to make them more durable and resistant to tearing. The fabrics that are made with polyester resin, are used to make various kinds of products like carpets and ropes.

Alkyd Resins

Alkyd resin is another kind of synthetic epoxy resin that is manufactured by organic fatty acids and their other components. They are obtained either from carboxylic acid anhydride or dicarboxylic acid. The name “alkyd” comes from its original name “alcid” which comes from organic acids and alcohol. As this resin is mostly made from fatty acids, it can easily be used in products for flexible paintings and coatings.

It is not so surprising that this kind of resin is mostly used in synthetic paints, enamels, and varnishes. This type of resin is mainly used in numerous industries like industrial, domestic, and commercial. In most settings, the paints and coatings of walls need to be strong and long-lasting. It is a well-known fact that the use of paints derived from alkyd resins was debuted in the construction industry.

Epoxy Acrylates

Epoxy acrylate is one of the most common types of epoxy resin. Regular epoxy acrylates are derived from diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A. They are widely used oligomers that are cured by UV light. They are extensively preferred in all kinds of industries because of their certain properties. They consist of durability, high rate of abrasion, impressive chemical resistance, and rapid curing.

They are mainly used in coating and painting products made of wood. No wonder this particular formula of epoxy resin finds a wide range of applications and utility. They are known to work with different kinds of substances, especially overprint varnishes and foil coating. This resin along with its other variants is always the first choice for industrial settings. Apart from coating wood, it is used in fillers, top coatings, primers, and furniture. The users rely on its flexibility and long-lasting plastic coatings as well.

Polyamide Resins

Polyamide resins are another form of synthetic epoxy resin. They belong to a family of thermoplastic polymers. In other words, this type of resin is created by heat and curated by a certain melting process. However, they do not lose their original characteristics. This type of resin is mainly found in products made of nylon and Kevlar.

Both of these materials are highly utilized in various industries and sectors. Ropes and stockings are made from nylon. Kevlar is used to manufacture jackets, gloves, combat helmets, and bulletproof vests. There is no doubt that resins, both natural and synthetic are very useful to consumers all over the world. New varieties of resins are still being invented or manufactured each year.
