I Have Two Butternut Trees
Orders, Orders, Packages Arriving Daily
Last night, the Brown Van [UPS] was in my driveway. A pleasant young man jumped out and handed me a package. It was a belt for one of our lawnmowers. The package could have been one of many possibilities. We have ordered belts, a hose retractor, and I have some butternut trees coming.
I am excited about my trees. The nursery had a May 15 ordering deadline, that I squeaked by, ordering my trees by May 12.
The last time I saw a butternut tree was 45 years ago. I was a child living with my parents.
The tree was tall. By fall, it was covered with nuts. As they ripened and fell off the branches, the nuts would cover the ground like little footballs. They were sticky. My mother was into crafts, so my father would slice them for her.
The nutmeats were delicious, as well.
See the Flags? That's Where They Will be Planted
According to their shipping schedule, the trees are scheduled to ship in a two month window. I could receive said trees any time from now until July 30.
They warned me that the trees will arrive in a dormant state. No leaves. Probably look like a shriveled up stick. Dead looking. This is because they are dormant. According to the definition of dormant tree, the temperature that they are stored affects how they are when you receive them. Then, you plant them in your warm dirt, and the temperature wakes them up. I should see buds and leaves in no time.
It's in Minnesota!!
It is 8:26 p.m.
I'm standing outside, listening for the truck. I'm excited. I have even marked the spot where the trees are going to be planted.
I hear a truck...
I went to bed.
This morning, there is an update. From the shipper. Or, is it shippee?
This Morning They Promise
My dog keeps getting concerned and growling. We are both highly alert.

Wake Up the Trees with Cold Water - Plant Tomorrow
Yes. They look good.
Today is the Day
I filled up a bucket with water, dug two holes, filled the holes with water. Got some composted dirt from the compost pile and brought my trees to the holes.
I decided to not reuse the dirt I dug out to fill the hole. I used the composted dirt. I did put the old dirt on top of the compost. Then, I dumped some more water on each tree.
Seal the deal, so to speak. Now, it's just a matter of time.
Dig Hole - Shovel Deep - Fill With Water - Both Holes
I put the tree in the hole. Filled in around tree with dirt. Then watered them to set the soil.
Time will tell how successful I will be...
