advantages, pool exercises, pool supplies
I love swimming pools. We had an above ground swimming pool when I was a kid, and it provided us with several years of enjoyment. When Mom got tired of it, my parents took it down and gave it to my uncle. I went for years without a swimming pool of my own, and I really missed having one. I love water, and I’m also a sun worshiper. Five years ago, I talked my husband into a pool. We have a small back yard and didn’t really have room for an in-ground pool. We did look at small in-ground swimming pools, but once we discovered the locations of our water and sewage lines, we discovered that in-ground swimming pools were out of the question, so we began looking at above ground swimming pools.
As I said, we have a small yard. I loved the 24-foot above ground swimming pools, but they were just too large for our area. I wanted a really big deck, and the big above ground swimming pools wouldn’t have left much room for a deck. We then began to focus on the 18-foot above ground swimming pools. I wanted a swimming pool that was large enough for my daughters and me to float around in and soak up some rays, and that was also large enough for my grandkids to play in. We bought the 18-foot swimming pool.
Before setting up the swimming pool, hubby marked out a circle and carefully leveled the ground. He dug down several inches so that the pool would “drop” into the hole. Once the ground was completely level, he added a few inches of sand and leveled that, too. Then the pool went up. Two of my sons-in-law helped, and it didn’t take long to have the assembly complete. As we filled the swimming pool with water, the grandkids had a blast playing in it!
I’ll be completely honest – I don’t like the way above ground swimming pools look. They often stick out like a sore thumb. Not ours! Hubby built our deck the same height as the pool, with the planks of the deck fitting snuggly under the lip of the swimming pool’s top rail. It looks great – like it’s a built-in pool. This construction also provides support for that top railing, as the kids are wont to stand on it and use it as a jumping-in point.
Benefits of above ground swimming pools - pool exercises
Benefits of above ground swimming pools – pool exercises
There are scores of benefits to above ground swimming pools! In the summer, I’m in mine every day. When the kids aren’t around, there’s nothing more relaxing than bringing the radio outside and floating around in the sun in the warm, soothing water. I also use the pool for exercising. I have foraminal stenosis and some nerve damage, and pool exercises are much easier for me than trying to exercise in other ways. The buoyancy of the water takes pressure off my joints. My favorite pool exercises involve swimming in place. I put on my snorkel, hold on to the side of the pool, and kick my legs. If I want to work my arms, too, I can do that by swimming against the flow from the pool pump. Moving my head from side to side in order to catch a breath was painful for my neck, but with the snorkel, I don’t have to do that.
We have strong pool pump for our swimming pool, and I enjoy standing in front of the jet with my lower back to it. The water current hits my lumbar spine in just the right spot, and the massage I receive is wonderfully soothing. Sometimes I do pool exercises while standing in the current.
Benefits of above ground swimming pools – fun!
My entire family enjoys the swimming pool. The kids come over a couple of times a week to swim and play. I have eight grandchildren. The youngest is almost one, and the oldest just turned eight. My oldest granddaughter learned to swim in my pool before she turned three. Now, all the grands except for the three youngest ones can swim, and they all learned to do so in my pool. Even the two babies love the water. When they get in the swimming pool, they kick their legs and put their faces in the water while holding their breath. It won’t be long before they’re swimming, too!
All of our summer get-togethers are held around the swimming pool. Hubby made a grilling area right next to the pool and covered it with brick pavers. Of course, we also have tables and chairs with umbrellas on the deck, so we can cook, eat, and swim right in our back yard. And what is it about water and swimming that makes food so good? Smelling meat on the grill while swimming in the pool is tantalizing! My mom always said that’s because you use so many muscles while swimming.
Benefits of above ground swimming pools – cost
Of course, one of the main benefits with above ground swimming pools is cost. I think our pool was about $4,000 for the complete kit. We ordered deck-mounted steps that weren’t included. Our liner has lasted for five years, and we’ve never had any problems with it.
We don’t spend a lot on swimming pool supplies, either. We order some online, and we buy some locally. I suggest that if you have a pool, you shop around for swimming pool supplies. Our pool is green right now. Hubby tells the grands we’re raising alligators in it. We don’t cover it in the winter. When April rolls around, hubby will start treating the water, and it won’t take long for it to be crystal clear. During the summer, we spend about $20-$30 a month on pool supplies in the way of chemicals. This is a small price to pay for so much fun and relaxation!
There are so many benefits to swimming pools. They provide a great place to play, exercise, and relax. After a hard day at work in the heat of a South Georgia summer, hubby sometimes takes a quick dip just to cool off. And those romantic midnight swims for two are enjoyable, also! With above ground swimming pools, you can have all the benefits for a nominal cost. I’d definitely recommend home swimming pools for everyone!

What a great looking pool! I'm glad there are folks out there who see how much fun it can be to personalize their own above ground pool to have it looking much better...in my opinion..to any in-ground pool!

Agree that above ground pools don't look the best. But they do have a lot of advantages over inground pools (cost, commitment, etc). With deck and landscaping, they can look decent, too.

Our neighbors put one in, and we've been able to enjoy it now and then. We are debating putting one in - the very short summer season here just doesn't justify it (a grand total of 9 weeks of summer - and that is in a good year)!
