8 Ways to Transform Your Kitchen With Trending Kitchen Island Designs

8-ways-to-transform-your-kitchen-with-trending-kitchen-island-designs

An island is a multifunctional kitchen table with floor units that sits at a distance from the rest of the set (straight, corner or U-shaped) and makes it more convenient. It provides both an extra worktop and storage space. An island layout kitchen is not suitable for every home: the area needs to be spacious and not too long. This article talks about it in detail and Ways To Transform your Kitchen with Trending Kitchen Island Designs.

Who needs an island kitchen?

  • An island layout is suitable if the kitchen is larger than 15 square metres (and you are prepared to put the dining table and chairs in another room), optimally 20-25 square metres.
  • If you have combined the kitchen with the living room or have a spacious studio flat, you can plan an island kitchen.
  • You have a cottage or a farmhouse.

Pros and Cons of Kitchen Island Designs

Pros

  1. The homemaker has everything at his or her fingertips, with a minimum of movement and plenty of work surface: with this layout, one can cook with ease and enjoyment.
  2. It is well zoned into a joined kitchen-living room or studio.
  3. It makes it convenient to have a cup of coffee or a snack.
  4. If you often have guests over, you can cook and chat with them at the same time. You're baking an apple pie or stirring a sauce while your beloved friend sits next to you with a cup of coffee or helps you cut the salad.

Cons

  1. This design will "steal" 1 to 3 square metres of floor space - not every kitchen can afford it.
  2. It's convenient to place a sink or cooktop on top of it, but it's often a hassle to lay the connections in a typical flat.
  3. An island cannot replace a full-fledged dining table, and bar stools with daily use are not as comfortable as beautiful.

Distance between kitchen and island

The optimal width for a passageway between an island and the kitchen unit or wall is 120 cm. The minimum is 100 cm. Anything less makes it difficult to pull out drawers or open cupboards.

Standard sizes

The size of the island is calculated on a case-by-case basis. In a small kitchen, it will be compact, whereas in a spacious one it may well be more than 2 metres long.

According to many of my fellow designers' experience, the comfortable dimensions of the kitchen island are 180x90 cm. The width can be standard (60 cm). If the table is deep (90 or 120 cm), the drawers or cupboards can be arranged in two rows and accessible from two or three sides. The worktop should be a standard height of 85-90cm, like the rest of the units, to make cooking on it comfortable.

Choosing a shape

  1. The island's shape should preferably follow the kitchen's shape: a square table is more appropriate in a square kitchen and a rectangular table in an extended one.
  2. The semi-circular kitchen island is comfortable but takes up the most space, so it is suitable for a large flat.
  3. Oval or round tables are far less common.

Minimalism is very characteristic of modern style kitchens. These are the most common styles, made of expensive natural materials and equipped with perfectly working mechanisms.

1. English classics

This style favours natural materials. The use of stone and stoneware tiles on floor and wood panels on the wall is also recommended when following this style. The ceiling should be white, and the walls should be rich natural colours - usually yellow, light brown or red - and the floor in darker shades.

Appliances should either be old-fashioned or fitted in cupboards. It is essential to create a sense of cosiness in this style.

2. Provence

It is almost similar to the previous style. The furniture is made of wood, but not as robust as in classic English style, but elegant and vivid. There are not too many accessories, mainly small items for cooking. The accent of colours is on a positive summer morning side.

3. High-tech

The floors should be dark, covered either with tiles or concrete. Walls can be light grey or white, covered either with plastic panels or plaster. The idea is to keep a minimalist approach. No use of curtains or roller blinds, in fact no use of any kind of fabric helps create a sense of future.

4. Loft

This industrial-style involves interconnecting spaces. Tiles or concrete on the floor, brick walls, preferably with exposed beams, complete this look. In this type of kitchens: metal, unfinished wood, or even steel counters would be interesting, as seen in restaurants.

5. Countryside

An island made of natural solid wood, which is not treated as much as it should be, would work well here.
Of course, it will look quite rustic, but that's the point. The island can take on the function of a working area or become a table at which one can eat comfortably.

6. Scandinavia Style

Kitchens like this are always bright. In Scandi kitchens, you don't have to make the space large. Brick legs that are rough and untreated would look good, especially against a glossy white backdrop.

7. Palette

In this design, the centre should be in harmony with the rest of the interior and the kitchen set. Also, when going for this look, the choice of the palette should be taken very seriously. You can make the island look great with a brilliant selection of colours.

8. Colour Duo Options

Designing a modern kitchen is a cool way to choose your colours. You can use duo colour options, a primary colour in the kitchen and a bright hue on the island. You can go for the most classic combination of black set and a white island.
