Guidelines to be taken after installation of inverter

Your living room starts stinking. You don't find the way out to avoid it.You don't even find the cause of the bad smell. After some time, you realize that, its due to the INVERTER placed at a corner of the living room.

What would you do then?

This is all about an Indian home where the Inverter was fixed for the first time and they hadn't gone through the guidelines or asked about it during installation and so had a strange experience which they shared. So, just go on to know more about it, this may happen to you some day !

Power Cut

Power Cut

!! When Should You Have An Inverter ??

The Problem of Power Cut

Usually, in India, we face the problem of "Power Cut" along with "water scarcity ".These are the two most common and unavoidable problems faced by most Indians, especially in villages and towns where people get used to that sort of living for years and the problem grows along with the people as they grow old.

Though this is a problem, its treated as a common issue due to poor planning or projects to generate electricity and storing underground water. This is very common in summers and people get used to the daily life without proper current and enough water.

The hot summer, especially in places where there is no sea shore or which do not have a sea coast, gives a very bitter experience. Most people fall sick due to sun strokes, woman find it hard to work in the kitchen as the power cut and burning stoves make it too hard for them to stand...they finish up the whole kitchen work as early as possible in mornings and late evenings, before the temperature rises up and the heat of the stoves make the kitchen uncomfortable to stay any more.

For people living in cities, though there is power cut, but for limited hours compared to the towns or villages. So,if they can afford to buy some electronic goods to stay cool, they can withstand the temperature to some extent.

This is a time, when the electronic goods are brought into the market and bought by the customers as they have no other alternative to get rid of the hot days and nights. Most dealers of air and water coolers, conditioners, portable and charging fans can find their business during summers. This is the time when they find there business in peaks.

So, that is one way to stay cool in summers when there is power. But what happens the rest ot the day when there is no power, during those limited hours ? Yes, the modern technology has a solution even for this problem. And there is another profitable good for the marketer...this is the INVERTER.

Inverters Defined

Scroll to Continue

A device used to convert direct current into alternating current.

An electronic device whose output reverses the sign of its input current or voltage, thereby shifting the phase of alternating current signals by 180 degrees. Also called phase inverter.

This is something which you can find in books or which is difficult to understand for a lay man.

Inverters Redefined

For a common man, its just a device which can help people get rid of Power Cut to some extent.

There may be other sources to get rid of power cuts or avoiding the unbearable heat during summers especially, which people find as economical during power cuts but for people who can afford to buy it, its an incredible device as this not only helps in finding a solution for the hot weathers but also a remedy for students for preparation during Exam time or completing their school projects.

Power in Inverter

An inverter needs Peak or Surge power and Typical or Average (Usual) power.

Peak power is the maximum power that an inverter can supply usually for short time. Some heavy current appliances like motor and refrigerator requires a start up peak power than they require when running.

Typical power is the power that the inverter gives on a steady basis. This is usually much lower than the peak power. Typical power is useful in estimating the battery capacity.

Therefore inverters must be sized for the maximum peak load and typical continuous power.

Selecting the inverter:

Before selecting the inverter, its important to calculate the total power consumption of the appliances that are going to be connected to the inverter.

It is important to note that the power consumption increases when the driving voltage decreases.

When the input voltage drops in the domestic supply lines from 230 V AC to 200 V A/C, electric devices will consume more current.

Precaution While Installation :

The inverter should not make any annoying / irregular noise.

The inverter should neither over heat nor produce burning smells. This can be better know after a few hours of installation.

Switch off the device , contact the installer immediately if you come across any of these experiences.

Inverter installed at home

Inverter installed at home

Home power inverter is to provide uninterrupted power to run household electric devices. These inverters for home are available in different voltage and load capacities.

The basic design of the home inverter a DC (battery):

  • Source is connected to a transformer through the centre tap of the primary winding.
  • A switch is rapidly switched back and forth

This allows current to flow back to the battery following two alternate paths through one end of the primary winding and then the other.

The working of the inverter

A fully charged battery will not take any current. Most inverters have two mode charging-Boosts charging and Trickle charging. During boost charging, around 5 to 7 ampere current will utilized and during trickle charging only 25 to 50 Millie ampere current will be utilized.

Main Criteria :

  1. Proper charging of the battery
  2. Efficiency to hold charge
  • Input voltage from the AC lines should be close to 230 volts for proper charging of the battery.
  • Fully charged battery will show 13.8 volts.
  • Inverter should switch on charging immediately when the battery voltage reduces to 12 volts.
  • Charging current depends on the time taken to complete the charging process and also the ‘charge condition’ of the battery

Power Consumption

Though there are many appliances we use in our daily life, to have happy living,we hardly bother about the power consumption of each of the device used.We get used to them and in course of time we even forget to live without them.

But,we also need to know the power consumption of each device, used at home instead of worrying after noticing the units of consumption in the monthly bill.

One needs to be aware of the fact that these devices make our lives better but we also need to be cautious not to overuse or misuse them.

Some Tips To be followed :

  • Switch off fans once you move out of a room.

People usually don't bother to switch off fans or coolers, once they move out of the room. This must be taken care off, to avoid wastage of power.

  • Use of lights is unnecessary in a well ventilated room during day time.

People just go to switch on the lights along with fans once they enter a room. This should be avoided, to make proper usage of power. Its wastage of power to switch on lights, when there is enough ventilation, during day time, that too during hot summers.

  • Switch off TV near socket connection along with the remote when your not watching it.

Usually, we tend to forget about the plug connection near the Television, which has to be switched off, whenever we switch off the remote. This avoids problems during problems during power fluctuations.

  • Use coolers and conditioners only when its too hot not for luxury.

People try to show off the luxuries they have and this may cause inconvenience not only to others but themselves in the long run.Use of coolers and conditioners shouldn't be as part of necessity but not as part of luxury in our lives.

So, before getting your inverter installed, its better if you are well aware of the power consumption of various devices at home and be cautious about it.One has to keep in mind that the use of Inverters and other electronics will make our lives comfortable but the power consumption due to such goods is also high. So,instead of getting shocked after looking at your current bill after a month's usage of power, use power wisely and judiciously.

Below there is table showing the units of power and the consumption of various appliances at home, which may be useful for you.

Is It "Economical" to buy Inverters ??

Several types of low-maintenance inverters have been designed that can withstand extreme temperatures,These inverters can operate year long, with very low maintenance. If you require inverters for outdoor purposes, be sure to check out for outdoor utility inverters.

There are many inverters that take care of your batteries.During a power failure, the inverter draws its power from the batteries. When the mains power is restored, the inverter shuts off but charges the batteries.

The inverter has intelligent circuitry to understand when the battery requires full charging current and when it has to be charged with a trickle current. Once the battery is fully charged, the inverter will stop charging.

"EXIDE" INVERTERS and BATTERIES :The Exide batteries are well matched to the inverters they make. This combination offers a convenient way to take care of operating your appliances during a power cut. The inverter starts operating as soon as there is a power cut and in most cases, you will not even notice the switch-over. Similarly, as soon as the mains power returns, the inverter goes back to charging the batteries.

Other similar brands are : Luminous, Microteck, Amara Raja Amaron etc.

Price Range : The price varies from a minimum of 1050 to a maximum of 7900 in Indian currency..

One can buy them even on line through snapdeal, ebay, amzon, quickr etc. These offer inverters at low prices.

More Tips .....

Usually after Installation, people don't bother to know the working of the battery which is provided with the inverter. And this is the reason why most of us don't know the steps to be taken, when they face a problem with the inverter.

Regular maintenance and care of the battery is very crucial. Just like any other home appliance your inverter and its battery require regular maintenance for effective operation and longer life. As,Battery is the backbone of an inverter.and is responsible for the good performance and long life of your inverter.

Following are some of the tips you may follow after installing an Inverter.

Place for Installation : An airy place reduces the heating up of the battery. It also reduces the frequent water topping requirement.

When there is no power cut : If the power cut does not occur, discharge the battery completely once every month and then recharge it.

Water levels : Ensure that the water level is maintained between the maximum and minimum water limit. Always top up the battery with distilled water.Fill the candles every 2 months with distilled water.

The Stinking Smell :

The main purpose of writing this article was to make you alert about an experience of a person next door who got his inverter installed after suffering the power cut for a long time.Though, he got it installed, he didn't bother to know the working or maintenance of the inverter or the battery.

A couple of months after he got it installed, the room where the inverter was kept, started having a foul smell. He didn't know the reason for the foul smell. He kept on spraying the room freshener , thinking it was a bad air coming from some where outside his house. He then started asking his neighbours if something was being cleaned by the municipal corporation nearby. He even recollected that it was similar to the rotten egg smell of Ammonia. He kept on using perfumes, incense sticks and so on to get rid of the bad odour.

Finally, late in the evening, when his uncle visited his house, could find the actual reason for the bad odour. It was nothing but the INVERTER !

Yes ! the inverter was smelling bad due to LOW WATER LEVEL. He hadn't checked the water level and so the containers or the candles were even about to burn due to heat.He was lucky enough to get it checked on time.

So, don't ever forget to check the water level and do use pure water. Don't ever neglect it as it may prove to be hazardous.
