I love being a grandparent, and love my grandkids. The problem I am finding is the comparison between the way we grand parent and the way my daughter in laws parents grandparent. They are loving grandparents and like to always give money to their daughter and kids and call all the time to either talk to their daughter or grandkids. We don't as much and are critized for it as if its bad. Her parents even made the comment that they would go into debt for them. As much as I love them and unless it was for health reasons for my grand kids or family, I would not go into debt. There is no right or wrong way here, I just wish I could get that through there heads on that, as long as I love my kids, money should never come into it. Thoughts???

This is a great site! I was blessed to know my grandparents on both sides of the family. As I was growing up, my grandpa (my mom's dad) and I became very close...Talk about 2 peas in a pod. When he suddenly had a stroke some years ago and never recovered, it hit me like a ton of much so that over the years, I wrote a book about what a wonderful man he was and what a great impact he had on my life. My wish is that every child could have a such a special relationship with at least one of their grandparents...what a wonderful world this would be if that were to happen!

Robin M Johnson on March 22, 2010:

Great quotes, thanks for taking the time to share.

In my grandparent practice I have logged four years so far, with six years practical experience. Two years belong solely to my four year old granddaughter who graced me with my final qualifying credential to open my grandparent clinic, and two simultaneous years she shares with her younger two year old brother.

All previously acquired credentials were gathered throughout 48 years of loving experiences and poignant observations showered intermittently upon my life. I was blessed to know all four of my grandparents, three were very present in my life and gifted me with formative values for love of God, family, country, religion, education, friendship, and hard work. My maternal grandfather left an indelible impression marking a path I resolved never to follow, for all of this I am most grateful.

My husband's grandparents have also influenced my life. His paternal grandmother passed away when he was three yet she and I have much in common, especially writing and music. His maternal grandmother I knew the longest of all eight of our grandparents, she was the epitome of patience, elegance, and family devotion. I often told her in the last few of her 92 years -- when I grow up I want to be just like you. Again I owe deep gratitude.

I have learned much from my father, step mother, and parents-in-law as I observed the grandparents they each were for my children. Having lost my mother at age 11 I can only imagine the kind of grandmother she would have been. Moments of softening toward past misunderstandings or hurts captured my heart at our parents loving interactions with our offspring. This gives me much hope for future healing in relationships with my children through their children.

To all of the above, and the many more grandparents it is or was my privilege to know and observe, I owe great debts for each and every credential they helped me acquire.

Perhaps I owe the most to my own children, two daughters and three sons. (girl, boy, boy, girl, boy) Surely all skills developed and mistakes learned from as I raised them form the majority of the practical experience I draw on as a grandparent.

In the four short years my oldest has been a mother I have felt the same softening tug at my heart that I once did while I watched our parents, gentle tugs toward healing wounds in our own parent-child relationship. What would parents and their children do without their grandchildren or children to help bridge rifts and heal family ties?

How great the opportunity to love and be loved unconditionally without the constant encumbrance of daily responsibility! Round the clock duty to provide basic needs and reasonable wants, balanced activities and adequate attention, along with self discipline and social training.

Thanks again for the wonderful quotes.

Grandparents can have such an important influence on their grandchildren.  I like how your "granny" was able to do so, in such a kind way that her grandchildren recognized her doing so, and to this day - consider it effective enough to continue her technique.  A beautiful tribute to her:-)

RedElf from Canada on May 09, 2009:

What a lovely hub. My own grandparents have long since passed, but I remember them so clearly.

My granny was very practical, and though she always encouraged our dreams, her support was always tempered with common sense. One of my favorites of her expressions, usually in response to the phrase, "I wish..." issuing fron one of her grandchildren (most often in wheedling tones) was the calm and gentle reminder that, "If wishes were horses, the beggars would ride."

That axiom has been passed down in the family - I know I have said it many times, to my son and to many others.

Regarding the last photo...  When I saw this picture of these "apparently" two grandparents with what I believe to be their grandchild - I too, was deeply touched.  I could not help but be strengthened, just knowing the familial bonds that were most likely in action here...

Some cultures, are much better at not only honoring grandparents, but integrating the grandparents as part of the family unit.  I honestly feel, that this is the ideal way in which a grandparent can influence their grandchildren.

Today, we as grandparents are so independent.  Society tells us, that after we have raised our own children and sent them off to college - they are on their own - and we are free.  Hmm?  I'm not sure what that says about us here in the U.S.?

I have some personal goals about being a grandparent and maintaining influence in my grandchildrens lives...  Not saying though, that I want to be the parent!  Been there done that:-)
