Quiz: Quotes by Famous People

I love a good quiz - but of course it has to be about things I know, so no good if it's sport or celebs. I still do pub quizzes with friends

Learn Some New Quotes And Also Remember Famous Old Quotes - Are You Ready For The Quiz?

This is quite a difficult quiz - it is a quiz about quotes by famous people but although some of the quotes themselves are famous, the rest are not necessarily well known, so you will need to work hard.

Use your logical reasoning, hunch or gut feeling to work out who said them.

Then, if you would like to do so, tell us how you fared!

For Myself, I Do Love Mulling Over Quotations

I have The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, a set of Charles Dickens first edition leatherbound books, several Shakespearean plays, as well as books by Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Oscar Wilde and numerous poetry books and plays, not to mention various philosophers, so I am not lost for wise sayings when I need to conjure up an idea.

Here's a Quotation Which I Found so Moving That I had it Pinned up on my Fridge for Several Years:

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out - because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Pastor Niemoeller (victim of the Nazis)

Sadly this warning is as relevant today as it would have been sixty years ago and that's a chilling thought.

And Now, Just Because I Like Them, I Have Also Added a List of Zen Proverbs and Sayings, for Your Enjoyment

Zen philosophy is wise, thought-provoking and uplifting. If you haven't come across this before, you'll be amazed by the depth of thought that can go into a short phrase, and if you do know some of them, I know you'll like to be reminded and also read more sayings.

Seven Zen Proverbs

  1. It takes a wise man to learn from his mistakes, but an even wiser man to learn from others.

  2. From the withered tree a flower blooms.

  3. Move and the way will open.

  4. All that we are, is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become.

As For Me, I Love Reading, and Am Often Inspired by Little Phrases I Have Found

I might find these in a book, or sometimes on the internet or on television. Sometimes I am so impressed that I even write them down in a special notebook I keep for the purpose. The outside cover is turquoise satin brocade with a Chinese design, so I get tactile and visual pleasure as soon as I pick it up, and then intellectual and emotional pleasure as soon as I remind myself of the contents.

Just to Wind up this Web Page, Here's a Bit of Fun With a Typical Quotation From Our Great Leaders

Said great leaders are prone to use such expressions as "We're all in this together", so I drew little cartoon faces on a box of mushrooms, to express this sentiment.

Here it is:

"We're All in This Together"

What Did You Think About the Quiz?

It was quite difficult, wasn't it? But never mind if you got a lot of them wrong, the main thing is:

Did you enjoy the quotations themselves? I tried to pick things with a profound meaning.

Did you learn something new? Did it make you think?

It's just nice to know who has been visiting.

You got me on this one. hahahah. Fun quiz but I didn't do to hot.

ismeedee on May 13, 2013:

Well you were right, it was a hard quiz! The ones I thought I'd got right were wrong, and vice verse!! Good fun! You should make more like it!

grannysage on October 20, 2012:

Hey I got 50%. It was a hard quiz because the quotes themselves weren't familiar. But it was fun guessing.

Nancy Tate Hellams from Pendleton, SC on October 20, 2012:

As far as the quiz goes, I didn't do so well, but I really enjoyed reading many wise quotes. Thanks!

nebby from USA on February 03, 2011:

Well I certainly need to brush up on my quotes. Great quiz.

tssfacts on December 17, 2010:

This is the first I didn't get any of them right. I must stop second guessing myself. It was a great quiz and enjoyed taking it.

BuckHawkcenter on December 17, 2010:

OK, I was half right, not bad considering I had heard only one of the quotes before. Nice challenge to work through.

I-sparkle on December 16, 2010:

I love your quizzes, although they show me to be blissfully ignorant in some aspects.

Cynthia Sylvestermouse from United States on December 15, 2010:

LOL!!! 50% - I should have been able to do better than that. One I knew and second guessed myself then got it wrong :)

oh dear 50%- much as I knew the Quotes I just could not remember who said them!

Liz Mackay from United Kingdom on December 15, 2010:
