How to Write Introduction and Conclusion for Articles

He is associated with science communication, research and project evaluation for the past twenty-five years and interested in helping others

Glorious Elements of Articles

Introduction and conclusions sandwich the main article. They have the role of holding the stuff firmly for the reader. Most often new authors directly begin the article without proper introduction and abruptly end without a proper conclusion. Even if the article has a lot of points and stuff in it, without the main parts, it fails to fulfil the quality requirements of many magazines and online websites. By reading the subsequent paragraphs it is possible to understand the importance of these two integral parts of an article.

Write Impressive Introductions

The main glory of the article is its headline. Next is the beginning of the article, which is considered as an introduction. The introduction is the entrance to a facility from the mainstream for the customer. In the case of an article, the customer is the reader. Introduction invites the reader to the article and carries him from the heading to the main article. It gives a proposal to the reader to read the main article and tell him benefits of reading it. If you are publishing blogs regularly online, be careful enough to begin each article differently. Otherwise, your readers feel that you are borrowing every time from your other articles.

Introduction Writing Strategy

Introduction of your idea has to be impressive to bring the reader from his world to your world. From the beginning of the article, engaging the reader in your article until the end is very important. An introduction is the most important part to convince your concepts to an off-centric mind and bring it to the theme of the article. The narrative style of writing with realistic wordings makes the first impression, the best impression. Therefore, while writing, a second reading of the introduction is a must. If possible, give it to a friend or a professional editor, so that it will be highly impressive. Edit your introduction to remove any confusing, ambiguous or vague statements.

Proper wordings, creative texts attract the reader. Proper guidance to get the maximum benefit from the article will be provided here. Based on this the author will proceed to read the article or quit from reading it. It will give succinctly the different sub-heads so that a glimpse of the article forms in the mind of the readers. It leads the reader to the article to take on the proper sequential flow.

Length of Introductions

Length of the introduction can be from 5% to 20% of the main article length. It also depends on the type of subject. New topics need more introduction sentences, whereas general articles need fewer details. However, restrict the introduction to a single paragraph or the maximum, three small paragraphs.

The Main Article is Important

There is no doubt that the succeeding article also must be good, divided into different paragraphs and different level headings and illustrations. It must have images, video, question and answer type polls to obtain reader feedbacks, bulleted points for easy grasping, callout text for excerpts, etc. 80% of the length of an article will be the main body of the article. Sufficient care and importance have to be given to the main content for maintaining good quality, without which there is no role for the introduction or conclusion in an article.

Conclusion gives carry home wrap-ups for you

Conclusions for Articles

Conclusion of the article is the proper finishing of the articles. It gives the reader a proper exit from the topic with a lot of things to carry for the future. It closes the deal and gives a signal to carry the things with the reader back home after the finishing line.

Conclusion Writing Strategies

Reaffirmation of what is already described in the main body of the article is provided here. A quick summarization of the key points described in the articles is given here with crispy wordings. The proper ending of the article creates value for the article and the author. Delivery of the appreciation of the article from the reader depends on the summing up of the article. It also re-fixes the importance of the topic.

The conclusion gives a proper direction for the readers to the point where the author wishes to take. So, before writing the conclusion ask a question, “what is the importance in it?” The answer to this would form a good conclusion. That way you will be able to present it better than making it, just another summary.

Length of Conclusions

Length of the conclusion maybe 10% or less than the entire article length. In small paragraphs up to two or three the crispy content of the conclusion can be limited to give the reader a quick wrap-up and exit. It is not bad to mix normal sentence in the top and bottom with a few bulleted points in technical writings and product-related articles.

Optimization for Search Engines

In common, whether it is an introduction or conclusion, a quote to begin or end the article makes it attractive. Apart from the title, tags and summary, a few beginning sentences from the article and concluding sentences of the article are drawn by the search engines to fetch for indexing for search results.

Things to Avoid

It is not necessary to always write a sub-heading as “Introduction” and “Conclusion”. Some authors also write, “In conclusion”, some others write as “Final words”, “Last words” or “Epilogue”. Readers like more realistic materials, so, you may be careful to avoid artificial sounding sentences. Simple paragraphs are used, without any sub-headings in both the introduction and conclusion. A simple paragraph in the beginning naturally becomes an introduction and the concluding paragraph of the article becomes the conclusion.

Final Words

Stale introductions and conclusions spoil the articles, so, it is worth cooking all new. Next time when you write your article or update an existing one online, make it a point to bring in something attractive element in the introduction and pitchy element in the conclusion. As the word introduction means, introduce the idea of the article deep in the mind of the reader and make the conclusion powerful enough to make the reader remember your article for long. When the shells are strong, the pearls inside remain precious.

You rightly pointed out almost everything about the importance of an introduction and conclusion in an article.

As first impression is the last impression, it is very important to write good introduction. The introduction defines what readers can expect in your article. On the hand, conclusion should able to clarify and give the key takeaways from the article, as you pointed out above. It was an extremely insightful article on the importance of introduction and conclusion in an article. I enjoyed reading it, Mr. Murlikrishna.

Your article is rightly stressing the right points for writing good articles. A lot of value is there for people who want to improve their writing skills.

Introduction and conclusion are the two important parts of an article that connect the readers to the main part of the article. The introduction is the peek-in window while the conclusion is the take-away, none less important than the main body of the article, and so should be presented with care.

Thank you for this valuable value-addition.

Prantika Samanta from Kolkata, India on April 07, 2020:

Introduction and Conclusion are the important segments of an article. A well-structured introduction enables readers to understand a topic better while Conclusion allows readers to check whether their understanding is appropriate.

So, the quality of an article depends much on an effective Introduction and a well-written Conclusion.

This is an excellent and an informative article which aspiring writers should keep handy as a ready reference.

Halemane Muralikrishna (author) from South India on April 07, 2020:

Thank you Mr Shreekrishna Sharma ji, It is written to help the new writers. In fact, the motivation came from one of the old writers in language writing wrote without both these! Anyway, I will be very happy if it is useful to the community.

Robert Nicholson from Silicon Valley on April 07, 2020:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm always looking for ways to improve my writing (I know my conclusions section is weak), and this is good advice.

Ironically, I give lectures and training on SEO. One of my "thought experiments" is to tell students they have 30 seconds to tell me what an magazine article is about. What do they look at?

Of course the answer is the intro, the conclusions, headings and subheads, and figure captions. So it's really important - for both human readers and SEO - to get these things right!

Halemane Muralikrishna (author) from South India on April 07, 2020:

Thanks, Mr Vikram for your reading. I found some of our language writers were writing this way without both. I advised them cordially and then thought of writing here. It is nice that many have liked it.
