Poem "Empty Swimming Pool" and Some Famous Modern Poets

I started writing poetry as a child. I write performance poetry, observational, sometimes humorous, sometimes serious human rights issues

I Wrote This Poem After my Holiday in Bulgaria

We stayed in a pretty coastal resort on the Black Sea, called St Konstantin (St Constantine to you!), a few miles from Varna (the second largest city in Bulgaria).

The Bulgarians do love their gardens and trees, and this particular pool was enormous, surrounded by pine trees and grass, with a little bar at one end, and lots of room to lie about sunning yourself.

During the day it was quite popular, but never over-crowded. Standing on our hotel balcony in the early morning before it got really hot, I would watch the cleaners going about their daily business. This poem is the result.

Take This Poll About Poetry

Some people take to poetry like a baby to milk, to others it's anathema.

I assume you like poetry or you wouldn't have landed on my web page - or did you think I was a swimming pool salesperson and you were looking for options for building your own?

Or maybe you thought I was flogging holidays in Bulgaria? I did name the hotel where we stayed, because we enjoyed it so much that we returned several times, but, no, this is about the poem, not the incidentals.

Here Are Some YouTube Videos on Poetry - I Hope You Like Them - a Very Mixed Bunch

  • The first one is a comedy sketch about poetry
  • Then one of the poems voted as most popular in England - "If" by Rudyard Kipling

Then a succession of dub poetry and humor by poets I've been to see:

  • Benjamin Zephania and
  • John Cooper Clark and
  • John Hegley and
  • Linton Kwesi Johnson
  • and I've just recently discovered Roger McGough and read his book of poetry - very clever and funny.

You won't necessarily want to listen to all of them at once, but you can always come back for more.

What do you think about the Poetry - or anything else, for that matter?

Don't be shy, just say something - anything!
