The Ultimate Character Name Generators List

What's Your Character's Name?

Naming your characters is hard. This is a fact of life. Thankfully, there are plenty of character name generators out there, created by thoughtful folks with a little experience of these things, and a lot of programming know-how.

From modern to ancient, mythological to outer-spacial, there are character name generators to help name every character here. No more excuses for naming your characters Bob and Alice!

Modern Character Name Generators

If you need a name for a character from contemporary Earth, one of these will get you one!

  • Random Names Generator: Male Characters
Okay, so it's a baby boy namer. Your character was a baby once, though, right?
  • Random Names Generator: Female Characters
As above, this is a character name generator for girls. That is intended to be used to name babies. But hey - she used to be a baby, didn't she?
  • Quick Name Generator
Does what it says on the tin: a quick character name generator that uses U.S census data. Your average American human character can be called these names without having to worry about appropriateness.
  • Behind the Name: Random Name Generator
This is sort of the ultimate in modern character naming - you've got to put a little thought into your character's origins, but it will give you a culturally appropriate name for just about any character born within the last two centuries. My persona
  • Random Name Generator
Yet another Random Name Generator. Uses U.S census data (again).

Fantasy Character Name Generators

Writing Fantasy? There's a character name generator for that.

  • Fantasy Name Generator
This is a complex (but easy to use) fantasy name generator, with quite a few options for the kind of fantasy name you're looking for. Worth having a poke around.
  • Extreme Fantasy Name Generator
If you're looking for a character name that's just a little over the top, this is the name generator for you. Perfect for fantasy spoofs and lighter sorts of fantasy fiction.
  • Dark Elf Name Generator
I've always imagined that not enough dark elves get written because of a dearth of dark elf character name generators. Now there's just no excuse.
  • Wizard Name Generator
A name generator for wizards. Obviously.
  • Goblin Name Generator
Even goblins need names from time to time. It can't be all looting, pillaging, blowing stuff up and being in the Evil Overlord's army. There's roll call, too.
  • Princess Name Generator
Over the top princess names for very special princesses. Also handy if you're writing a pantomime.
  • Vampire Name Generator
These are a little ridiculous, but if you're following the convention that vampires name themselves and are a little insane, then it's perfect.

Sci-Fi Name Generators

Sci-fi names are some of the hardest to come up with, since there are so few rules about what you can do. Luckily, other people have thought of this, and thoughtfully created name generators for just this kind of situation.

  • Weird Name Generator
Need a really odd name for an alien? Look no further!
  • Giant Robot Name Generator
If your sci-fi novel somehow doesn't have a giant robot, you should be generating a name and adding one. There is no such thing as an 'unnecessary giant robot', is there?
  • Cat Being Namer
So you're writing the space version of Cats, huh? Bet you never thought there'd be character name generators built with you in mind, did you? Well, you were wrong.
  • Alien Name Generator
In a variety of alien languages! Nice and straightforward, and it even does translations!
  • Ship Namer
Don't look at me like that. Spaceships can be as much of a character as the people on them (the TARDIS, anyone?). They need names too.

Historical Name Generators

Because even the Ancient Greeks had names, and very few of them were called "John".

  • Ancient Greek-Style Namer
No promises that these actually mean anything, but they will sound right. If you want a real name that actually does mean something, raid one of Plato's works - they didn't have all that many names in Ancient Greece, anyway.
  • Western Name Generator
Complete with nicknames! (You know, like Billy "The Kid"). Who doesn't love a good Western?
  • Victorian & Steampunk Name Generator
Very handy, because it gives out appropriate names depending on social class, as well. Ignore the titles for nice, Victorian-sounding names.
  • Roman Name Generator
This is the king of Roman character name generators, as it also explains the Roman naming convention simply. Handy to stop people telling you that your Roman name is wildly inaccurate.
  • Medieval Name Generator
Name your peasants and lords with ease! Also ideal for when you get stuck naming characters in Medieval Sims.

I use the name generator in Scrivener to generate the names for my writing, but the resources here are good to know about if I ever decide to go down the fantasy or sci fi writing route.
