Writing Lessons I Learned

Is writing a serious business?

I look back and see that writing for me and maybe for others too, is not a serious business. As a young writer, I started out in 1997, tried and tried to have a first book published but to no avail.

The several negative responses did not bring my spirits down to stop trying for a positive result.

It wasn’t about being popular and having that steady platform in writing online. At that time, I had no connection to the Internet and having my first book published wasn’t that easy. The process was normal to mail the manuscript to traditional publishers and hope for the best.

See writing as you would do your day job.

If you take writing light-heartedly, and not serious, no other writers will do that either. When you choose to write, but not what your readers want you are not a writer. If writing is not paying for what you give to your readers, then do not write.

I write because writing is my passion.

Where is the fun in writing if you are in a serious mood?

Take storytelling for instance, it is about entertainment. So, you tell stories with great expressions and sound childlike in these expressions. You live in a serious world and do as you see. Grown up and trying to work out what works best for you in the writing genre is not always about being serious.

If your writing isn’t fun who will enjoy it?

A simple joy in telling stories creates a good atmosphere to an audience. Depends on what you are writing, but writing shouldn’t be ignored and not taken to a fun point in your life.

Writing for all writers deep down is more about sharing what they feel and about sharing their experiences with others. Lessons learned from your writing makes you feel proud of your achievements. I remember the reason for me to write a book and how I came this far in writing online.

Do you remember when you first started writing and the reason for writing?

When I started writing I didn’t think of myself writing online and where I would be in ten years from then.

I enjoyed writing down sentences that made sense and to have my first book published. Writing made me feel free and happier. It felt like I had many possibilities.

I love what I do, and no matter what I write about I feel good about it. Something that is not easily understood or explained by many writers.

Write about what makes you feel enthusiastic.

Maybe I will always feel this way about writing and write for my own reasons. Writing is about listening to yourself and to be willing to not write all the time this would fog your brain. A correct step forward is to write, but when you feel like doing that.

Sometimes you think and think even more of what to write, when all you need to is to let that idea come to you while you are relaxed. Know what you want to say to an audience.

You want to say something different and tell a different story that no one has heard of, right?

You can write about anything; the truth is every reader sees your story as different. Everything is inside of you and ready to come out and to be written down, but you do not know how to do this. Listen and wait for the moment for a new idea that will come to you when you least expect it. Believe in yourself and see how the change will come to you.

Is writing always hard?

Writing requires discipline, but somehow you are faced with writer’s block, and doubt about when will be the next chapter of your life written. You begin writing everything in your diary, and one day realize how much has been written and mostly you have stopped and not went back for a recheck.

A lot can be written from your diary in stages.

Nothing in what I have written in the past is wasted. It is of value and has been accomplished. I have learned lessons in writing and appreciate my followers. Goals are there to be achieved, but you don’t have to focus on a goal to make that happen. Sometimes you need to step away from goals, do what you have to for yourself.

When you focus on that goal you achieve it and then what?

You become fixated on goals and don’t know what to do after you have achieved it. Most important is when you are at your desk that means something good will come out of it. This is how you get in a place of truth. I know that nothing of what I have written is not wasted even if I had not had it published.

What does it mean to be a writer?

A writer is someone who talks about their work and only that to put into perspective of what they have done or have been writing about a certain genre. These conversations are about notes of a genre. It doesn’t mean you are a writer only if you continue to write and have published works.

You talk about your writing to others, also making you noticed as that writer.

One can be a writer in different ways. I discovered to be a writer, I must broaden the actual meaning of who I am. Writing to express oneself is to be willing to be creative and write what makes me worthy of a reader.

In everything one does nothing goes back and you can’t repeat the past. Focus on the present than relying on the future, well, you will never know what will be.

In many areas of my life, I have had struggles to make it in writing online. The time from living back in South Africa to living in Croatia has changed me a lot. I can’t go back and keep on at what was in the past. This is what it is, and I am grateful for that.

I am positive about now and I found peace with myself in Croatia. In all this time, I felt different about living in Croatia. I have come to realize that my safety is important.

Writing has helped through many days in all the challenges I have gone through and many more to come my way. My strengths have carried me along and my weakness showed no more during such times.

What lessons have you learned from writing?

It's good to read about your experience. I love writing but I always lived in the knowledge that my sister is a much better writer than I have and she doesn't even care to write. I wish I have her talent until recently, I know and I believe I have exactly the same talent as she has and since I do it, I have become better. Do it everyday and you'll improve.

Great article Devika. It is so much like my own experiences as a writer. I believe, we keep on learning and evolving as far as writing is concerned. I was interested in writing since my childhood days. I used to write in a diary, whatever I wanted to express. With the passage of time, my writing has changed for the better, but still there is much to learn, and I am still learning.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful article.

FlourishAnyway from USA on February 19, 2021:

People can approach writing as an art, a craft, a hobby, a chore or task, a passion, or a job. Depending on the setting, my mood, the stage of my life, and various motivational factors it has probably been each of these things for me in my 50-plus years. It is integral to who I am. I’m glad you have grown in your writing and hope that you continue to do so.

Lots of interesting thoughts and good advice, Devika! You have certainly made a positive journey in your writing! I admire your hard work and your passion for what you do, always optimistic and upbeat.

I write because I love it too. I started taking it seriously when I was 10. I had a wonderful English teacher who recognised my abilities and helped me, realising how keen I was. That, and the fact that my parents encouraged my English and language studies, made me continue enjoying writing. I've published a few articles and some poems but nothing big and nothing well-known. However, I'm proud of those small things and to see them in print is great. Mostly, I do it because I love it and can't imagine not writing!

Keep safe and well, Devika!

Ann
