Are you a writer? Yes? If yes, do you have a bio? Bio is the first impression of every freelance writer. Clients need to know you before hiring you. Even if you have expert skills, it’d be useless if you can’t show them through your bio. Today, we are going to discover how to write an effective bio.
Besides freelancing, if you are planning to sell your work such as articles, book and so on, you need a killer bio. So, let’s start with the basics:
What bio is all about?
A bio is a common word used for biography. Don’t get distracted. It’s not about detailing your whole life into an autobiography. It is required to cover only the required information. Consequently, you need to cover details that are relevant to the specific work. For example, writing a bio for a copywriting job will be entirely different from writing a bio for a memoir job.

- News releases

What all you must include in your bios?
- Name and business name
- Contact details - phone number, email and website URL
- Specific information, relevant to the targeted audience. Here you must answer, Why you are the perfect candidate? How your experience is beneficial for the job?
- Never fake. Write bio with facts.
- Include relevant experience and education. Memberships of an organization, club, or a group can also be beneficial.
- Even if you don’t have appropriate education, then it won’t affect much if you have experience. Volunteer for work and write something on your own to show your experience with proof.
- Write in the third person. For example, instead of writing “My writing journey began when…”, write “Prachi’s writing journey began when…”
Not all bios are read
Including everything seems like a pretty good thing to describe your capabilities, but don’t forget these 3 words: “Less is More”.
You are not writing a CV or resume for a job application. You are attracting potential clients by showing who you are and that to be in an interesting manner.
For a quick idea, browse several fiction and non-fiction books in your local bookshop or on the Internet. Look for the information on the back cover or in the starting and observe how it describes the authors. Such bios are crafted wisely with serious thoughts to deeply engage the readers.
How to start writing a bio
- Skills to write a bio improve with time.
- In the beginning, just write everything that comes to your mind in relation to your writing career. Make sure it is in the third person.
- Keep on writing, doesn’t matter if it counts to a couple of pages.
- This helps you leave behind your overly conscious mind and give a free flow to your thoughts.
- It is better to create a map or a diagram in your mind with important highlights and then, pour them down on paper to bring them into one tune.
